What chance we see rival SPLs next season?

1081

I wonder if we will see two rival Scottish Premier Leagues next season?  We could see a SPL consistent with the threats made to SFL clubs last week, let’s call it SPL Loyal, with Hibs, KIlmarnock and a few others.  They would sit atop a feeder league containing whoever they could attract from the SFL and Sevco, who due to fan power would be excluded from the top division, no matter how few teams that division had.

Meanwhile a rival SPL could setup, let’s call it SPL Solvent, with Celtic, those from the Gang of 10 who realise they are better-off participating in a league which is likely to survive until next May, along with the teams who last season finished near the top Scottish Football league.

SPL Solvent would make no threats to exclude SFL clubs who were due promotion on merit, and would therefore attract the balance of SFL clubs; which is likely to be the overwhelming majority.  This league would contain the only club with the ability to underwrite the commitments needed to bring broadcasters and commercial partners on-board.  It would also be free of, moral and ethical questions, where clubs are united with their fans on what it means to organise sporting events.

It’s not the worst idea floated in recent weeks.

I’ll give you a true Paul McStay story.

Paul emigrated to Oz a few years back ,with his family.

When Ronnie Coyle was ill ,he flew home to take part in Ronnie’s testimonial match against Raith Rovers at Stark’s park.

The game went to penalties and Paul took and scored his ,in front of the Rovers fans.

Anyone who remembers Paul after missing his penalty in the LC final at Ayebrokes ,will know that this must have dug up some really painfull memories for him.

Later that night he attended the testimonial dinner ,along with his dad and his brothers.

Paul and his family bid serious amounts of money for shirts etc, knowing that the money would go to Ronnie and his family.

Ronnie Coyle died the next week.

I had the pleasure of speaking to his dad that night.

His dad told me that he had watched The Maestro video just a couple of day’s before and that it had dawned on him that he had never fully appreciated until then ,just how good he was.

He told me the story of Paul’s performance at Wembley in The schoolboy international.

The two star Scottish players that day were ,Ally Dick and Paul.Paul Rideout scored for England.

He told me,how Spurs met with Dick’s family and offered copious amounts of money for him to sign.Which he did.

Paul McStay was offered even more money by Spurs.

He came back up the road and signed for Celtic.

Do you know how much he asked Celtic for to sign on ,after having been made the offer by Spurs?

I’ll give you a clue ,it starts with a Z and rhymes with Nero.

    That’s right ,Ziltch (;-)

Paul McStay had several opportunities to play for clubs who would have rewarded him with the afore mentioned copious amounts of Money.

As his proud dad said .

He played where his heart was.

I have always admired Paul McStay the footballer,he is worthy of a claim as Celtic’s greatest ever player. However Paul McStay the man exceeds even that.

Have no doubts he had option’s, but as Mr McStay said “He played where his heart was.”

I agree that Paul mcStay was a great player for us and probably in a relatively poor Celtic side at that time.

However, what other teams were in for/ interested in signing him?

    Emdy?

Who is this Paul Mc.Stay of whom you speak?

Is he a brother of Jimmy Mc.Stay, former Celtic manager?

Seriously, I seem to recall there was talk of one of the second tier Italian clubs supposedly interested.

Sorry to be a spoilsport, but Hungary has the most beautiful anthem (OK, they weren’t in Euro 2012 but Magyar Himnusz is on Youtube). IMHO Italy has one of the worst anthems – & I spend lots of time there: Poland’s is pretty good.

  7. That Adrian Chiles just doesn’t look that right, no offence of course, looks like Chunk from the Goonies. Amazing that he’s made a career on TV, must be really funny and insightful.

  8. Evening all

I hope all are well and looking forward to tonight’s game. Kindda hope Italy win but really just hope it’s a fitting end to a mostly fine competition. I think I prefer the Euros to the World Cup now because the latter goes on too long and has too many boring matches between hopelessly mismatched teams

I hope Paul will indulge me but ca can I make a wee request. If any of you – including lurkers – have any memories or anecdotes relating to the great Sean Fallon can I ask you to forward them to seanfallonceltic@yahoo.co.uk or twitter.com/Seanfalloncelt

    thanks

I do not doubt Paul loved Celtic and his heart was always there.

I simply asked the question “who wanted to sign him”.

Thank you all for your replies.

I hope you are having a great holiday and I hope your good lady is well too!

No worries , each to their own , I just love the tune and the sentiment and the players and fans seem to get off on it as well. Will have a listen to the Hungary entry on EuroAnthem 2012 …

  18. My favourite (was my avatar when such things were allowed) was John Hughes. Missed out on Lisbon because of a sore ankle (probably adminstered during training by the guy who got his place, my next favourite, 10:30).

  19. Fassreifen - you can't put a price on integrity on

Anyone else got their 2012/13 away top yet? Mine seems to be on back order, so perhaps they’re pretty popular?

    Evening bhoys,

Hope that Spain shut up the critics tonight by hammering the Italians.

Any signing news. Heard that Forsters all but signed, would love us to get big Ciani and play Rogne – Ciani – Mulgrew at the back. If we are selling Ki for £8m, I’d be looking at getting Rhodes and Henrikson if we want to do anything in Europe.

  21. for the mid 80s to about 1990 paul mcstay was the most valuable and sought after player in british football.

when mcstay thought about leaving in 1992 he was offered a huge contract by italian seri a team ‘udinese’.

‘howard kendal’ everton manager admited that mcstay was the finest midfielder he had seen in the modern game and tried to sign him on many occasions.even ‘alex ferguson’ admited that he was the best right sided midfielder in the british game.

‘kenny dalglish’ made an attempt to sign mcstay during mcstays last celtic season 1997 but mcstay was already knowing that his ankle injury was about to cut his career 4/5 years short.
