When directors and creditors are one and the same

1069

Thanks to everyone who contributed questions for the Forum last night.  It was an open, frank and productive meeting.  Draft minutes will be distributed to attendees to be checked for accuracy before being formalised, after which the meeting’s outcomes will be made public through various outlets.

One thing which is evident, and goes largely unacknowledged, is the significant contribution made by Auldheid in building the channels needed for constructive dialogue between the club and supporters.  Well done, Pat.

I see Neil Lennon in the news being “flattered” after Norwich City chief exec, and former Celtic commercial director, David McNally, told the media he believed it only prudent he keeps an eye open for a new manager, should Chris Hughton ‘leave’.  Neil answered well, refused to comment on a job which is already filled, while setting a standard answer, suitable whether he was interested or not.  There is no point firmly denying interest in a job as a subsequent refusal to do so for a different position would leave too much information on the table.

McNally is right, it is only prudent you keep an eye on these things, but can you imagine how Hughton feels when reading this stuff, or what the resulting speculation will do to the club’s relegation chances?  There is now far too much information on the table now for Hughton to be effective.

A football manager needs authority and respect, Houghton has been denied both.  Norwich should do the decent thing and pay the man his contract before they sleepwalk into the lower leagues.

It’s funny how different people read the same thing in different ways.  An announcement that a club is in discussions with a couple of existing shareholders to borrow money to provide working capital is self-explanatory in most respects.

The announcement by Newco Rangers this morning establishes that the club needs a fresh injection of money to pay its bills.  We all knew this, but the sharp-eyed will also have noted that this loan will create the club’s two major creditors.  No bank will lend to Newco, their creditors will be limited to trade suppliers, HMRC and other football clubs, all pretty low values.  This £1.5m loan is likely to give the lenders sufficient control to vote through anything they desire, should administration occur.  The controlling directors and creditors will be one and the same.

Newco Rangers has been rag-dolled since its inception by various pressure groups within the broader family who seem determined to stamp on whatever green shoots of recovery exist.  What it really needs is the kind of strong leadership this directors-creditors group can provide, leaders who will do the right thing, take the necessary medicine and stand firm against the quislings.  While others tried to get the club for free, they paid their money, continue to do so, and deserve the chance to run their club as they see fit.  For what it’s worth I think the club and its current controllers are a perfect fit.  I hope they use their largest creditor status to protect their interests.

Congratulations to STV’s Peter Smith (aged 12 ½), who scooped the Royal Television Society’s Young Talent of the Year award, achieved partly because he was prepared and able to ask hard questions, when many of his elder peers would rather eat their own toe nails.  He’s still not uncovered that Dallas Cowboys email, so more work still to be done.

Manchester United are preparing to battle with rivals Manchester City over Celtic central defender Virgil van Dijk.

United manager David Moyes is planning a major shake-up to his United defence in the summer, with Nemanja Vidic on his way out and doubts hanging over the future of Rio Ferdinand.

Inter Milan have claimed a deal to sign Vidic is “90 per cent done” and Moyes is already plotting how the Serb will be replaced.

United are the latest club to register their interest in Van Dijk after City and Arsenal made their admiration clear by sending scouts to watch the Dutchman Van Dijk only joined Celtic for £2.6 million last June from FC Groningen, but has been a revelation for the Scottish club and impressed in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old is contracted to Celtic until 2017, but the Scottish Premiership leaders would find it difficult to turn down bids of £10 million.

Moyes looked at signing Van Dijk for Everton last season and has kept close tabs on him since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as United boss.

Vidic will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, when he will be a free agent, and Inter have already made an early move.

The president of the Italian club, Erick Thohir, said: “I don’t want to announce something that’s 90 per cent done. I think it’s better to make an announcement when it’s complete. I don’t want to speak on something that’s not done yet.”

City will look to bolster their central defensive options in the summer, when Joleon Lescott’s contract expires, and have placed Van Dijk high on their list of targets.

Arsenal are planning to sign a new central defender in the summer and are interested in Van Dijk and Ajax 22-year-old Joel Veltman.

Out-of-favour club captain Thomas Vermaelen is yet to make a decision on his Arsenal future, but Napoli are pushing hard to try to take the Belgian to Italy.

Vermaelen’s Belgium international team-mate Dries Mertens is keen for the defender to join him at the San Paolo stadium.

Despite his lack of action at the Emirates, Vermaelen is settled in London and is keen to see whether he is given any encouragement that he can win back his starting place.

If his situation does not improve, then Vermaelen will consider Mertens’ pleas to join him at Napoli, while Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg are also pursuing the 28-year-old.

  13. Neganon, the SNP will not hold power in Scotland beyond the first election.

We will live in a socialist country, that is, of course, only an opinion.

Either vote is a leap into the dark.

The UK may leave the EU in 2017!

There’s the rub. Imagine, if you will, that these two policies had been brought in by the Tories in Westminster. We could quite easily be in the position where no matter what we did at the polls they’d have free reign to ride roughshod all over us. We could conceivably be ruled by a party that got 0 votes. That’s simply can’t be right.

If we have self-determination we can change that. While it’s always possible for the same to happen in the devolved parliament, far too many will vote SNP as a reaction to the Westminster Tories/Labour/Lib Dems become all but indistinguishable.

We need a new politics and we won’t get it if things remain as they are.

  19. Doc it’s absolutely crazy. Beyond belief crazy. I’m sorry but why on earth would anyone support independence with these guys in position of power in Scotland? I honestly can’t believe what I am reading tonight. Utterly astonishing. I have written to my MSP. He will stonewall it.

This didn’t just spring up this week. It has been discussed since last year when The Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill was unveiled.

Too late to greet now. Obviously Labour, Lib Dem and SNP MSPs didn’t get enough concerns. Only the Tories were against this.

  26. a light insanity on

the scottish government children’s bill. Apparently this bill, amongst other laudable aims will appoint a state guardian oveR every child in Scotland. This remarkable concept threatens the rights of parents to look after their children without interference from the state.Note only is this reminiscint of the OBF act but on a wider and far more frightening scale buts it’s incredibly sinister. The scottish parliament has now officially gone mad. Now I find myself as bedfellows of some mad religious groups but they are right.HWho the hell are these these guardians and what the hell do they know about our children?
