When directors and creditors are one and the same

1069

Thanks to everyone who contributed questions for the Forum last night.  It was an open, frank and productive meeting.  Draft minutes will be distributed to attendees to be checked for accuracy before being formalised, after which the meeting’s outcomes will be made public through various outlets.

One thing which is evident, and goes largely unacknowledged, is the significant contribution made by Auldheid in building the channels needed for constructive dialogue between the club and supporters.  Well done, Pat.

I see Neil Lennon in the news being “flattered” after Norwich City chief exec, and former Celtic commercial director, David McNally, told the media he believed it only prudent he keeps an eye open for a new manager, should Chris Hughton ‘leave’.  Neil answered well, refused to comment on a job which is already filled, while setting a standard answer, suitable whether he was interested or not.  There is no point firmly denying interest in a job as a subsequent refusal to do so for a different position would leave too much information on the table.

McNally is right, it is only prudent you keep an eye on these things, but can you imagine how Hughton feels when reading this stuff, or what the resulting speculation will do to the club’s relegation chances?  There is now far too much information on the table now for Hughton to be effective.

A football manager needs authority and respect, Houghton has been denied both.  Norwich should do the decent thing and pay the man his contract before they sleepwalk into the lower leagues.

It’s funny how different people read the same thing in different ways.  An announcement that a club is in discussions with a couple of existing shareholders to borrow money to provide working capital is self-explanatory in most respects.

The announcement by Newco Rangers this morning establishes that the club needs a fresh injection of money to pay its bills.  We all knew this, but the sharp-eyed will also have noted that this loan will create the club’s two major creditors.  No bank will lend to Newco, their creditors will be limited to trade suppliers, HMRC and other football clubs, all pretty low values.  This £1.5m loan is likely to give the lenders sufficient control to vote through anything they desire, should administration occur.  The controlling directors and creditors will be one and the same.

Newco Rangers has been rag-dolled since its inception by various pressure groups within the broader family who seem determined to stamp on whatever green shoots of recovery exist.  What it really needs is the kind of strong leadership this directors-creditors group can provide, leaders who will do the right thing, take the necessary medicine and stand firm against the quislings.  While others tried to get the club for free, they paid their money, continue to do so, and deserve the chance to run their club as they see fit.  For what it’s worth I think the club and its current controllers are a perfect fit.  I hope they use their largest creditor status to protect their interests.

Congratulations to STV’s Peter Smith (aged 12 ½), who scooped the Royal Television Society’s Young Talent of the Year award, achieved partly because he was prepared and able to ask hard questions, when many of his elder peers would rather eat their own toe nails.  He’s still not uncovered that Dallas Cowboys email, so more work still to be done.

AMBROSE is gobsmacked that doubts remain over whether defensive partner van Dijk and goalkeeper Forster will be representing their countries in June, and is adamant playing in Scotland should not be a hindrance to anyone’s cap chances.

SNS GroupVirgil van Dijk failed to make Holland’s initial World Cup squad

EFE AMBROSE knows two of Celtic’s record-chasing back five are going to Brazil in the summer but the Nigerian is adamant four of them should be sampling arguably the most exciting World Cup of all time.

Ambrose and Honduran Emilio Izaguirre will be representing their countries at the extravaganza and the centre-back is convinced his partner Virgil van Dijk and keeper Fraser Forster should be joining them in the colours of Holland and England respectively.

They will be together at Tynecastle tomorrow – if Izaguirre recovers from injury – as they try to survive the 31 minutes that would give them the

Scottish clean sheet record. And Ambrose yesterday admitted he is gobsmacked that doubts remain over whether van Dijk and Forster will be at the big show in the summer.

Van Dijk hasn’t made a squad of 33 players named by Dutch coach Louis van Gaal for a get-together next month, a decision that makes his

selection for the World Cup a long shot.

Ambrose simply can’t get his head round that – and he is adamant playing in Scotland should not be a hindrance to anyone’s cap chances.

He said: “I would be disappointed if Virgil’s not there and I think he should be because he’s a great player. I am certain Holland really need his talent.

“He has good feet and every quality to play in the World Cup Finals.

“I have seen Holland play and I think he still has a chance but it is up to the manager. He has to decide what kind of players fit into his squad best.

“But I believe everything is possible in football and that before the World Cup Virgil can play for Holland.

“For the way he’s playing it is unimaginable he could not make a squad of that size.

“But of the players who are there, the manager must think they are better.

“I believe Virgil will have a long time in the game and will play for the Holland national team. He is still young and will work even harder.”

As for Forster, Ambrose has no doubt he should be on Roy Hodgson’s plane to Rio.

He added: “Fraser is different class. Nobody can say there is anything he can’t do because already with Celtic he has done everything.

“He has kept clean sheets and in every game he’s been in top shape.

“Week in, week out he’s been doing it and he should be given a chance to perform in the World Cup because I don’t think there is much difference between playing in Scotland and the English Premiership.

“We have played against the best in the Champions League and Fraser has kept Celtic going.

“He should go to the World Cup and it doesn’t matter if he’s playing in England, Scotland or Germany. What he is doing is special.

“I’ve never been told not to play in Scotland. The first time I appeared for my national team I was playing in Nigeria. And when I played at the Olympics I was performing in the second league, not the Premier League.

“So it doesn’t matter where you play. It matters who the player is.”

SNS GroupEfe Ambrose is baffled by van Dijk’s snub

These players are now steamrolling towards their third title in a row and Tynecastle represents the next step.

But the clean sheet record will attract more attention than the quest for three points.

The Nigerian added: “Everybody is talking about it but it is not easy to achieve. It has taken a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment.

“It is close but you never know when it is going to end. We just think ‘game after game’ and see what happens. I’m sure the fans will let us know (if they get to 31 minutes) but we just have to keep it going.

“We scored seven goals there last time but this time it is going to be a different game because we know Hearts will give us a good fight as they won’t want a repeat of that scoreline.

“We want to do more than we did the last time so it is going to be a two-way fight. But we are Celtic and we know how to win games.

Ambrose was promoting a Celtic charity initiative that will see fans send their unwanted strips to Brazil for

disadvantaged kids to wear during the World Cup and beyond.

Celtic have donated 1000 shirts and while Ambrose believes it is a fantastic gesture he admits the World Cup is on the backburner for now as far as he’s concerned – even though Nigeria’s match with Argentina might be one of the best of the group stage.

He said: “There are three or four months to go and to work on and right now I am only thinking about Celtic.

“I don’t have time to be thinking about anything apart from Celtic. That’s all I’m concentrating on.

“But I was in Brazil last summer for the Confederations and it is the best place to play football.

“It was a pleasure to be in that tournament. I never thought I’d get the chance to play in Brazil but things happen for a reason and I enjoyed every minute of every game I played there.

“It is perfect for playing football and for the World Cup. It is a great football nation – the best. Everyone in Brazil speaks about football and for them to have the World Cup is such a big thing.

“We’ve played Argentina in every World Cup we’ve been involved in apart from one. We’ve met them three times already, so we are not new to each other.

“They have had the edge in the past but I believe this time things will turn.”

  15. Manchester rivals united in admiration for Celtic central defender Virgil van Dijk

United have joined City in tracking the progress of Celtic’s highly-rated Dutch defender.

Big in Manchester: Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk (left) is wanted by both Manchester United and Manchester City.

Manchester United are preparing to battle with rivals Manchester City over Celtic central defender Virgil van Dijk.

United manager David Moyes is planning a major shake-up to his United defence in the summer, with Nemanja Vidic on his way out and doubts hanging over the future of Rio Ferdinand.

Inter Milan have claimed a deal to sign Vidic is “90 per cent done” and Moyes is already plotting how the Serb will be replaced.

United are the latest club to register their interest in Van Dijk after City and Arsenal made their admiration clear by sending scouts to watch the Dutchman Van Dijk only joined Celtic for £2.6 million last June from FC Groningen, but has been a revelation for the Scottish club and impressed in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old is contracted to Celtic until 2017, but the Scottish Premiership leaders would find it difficult to turn down bids of £10 million.

Moyes looked at signing Van Dijk for Everton last season and has kept close tabs on him since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as United boss.

Vidic will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, when he will be a free agent, and Inter have already made an early move.

The president of the Italian club, Erick Thohir, said: “I don’t want to announce something that’s 90 per cent done. I think it’s better to make an announcement when it’s complete. I don’t want to speak on something that’s not done yet.”

City will look to bolster their central defensive options in the summer, when Joleon Lescott’s contract expires, and have placed Van Dijk high on their list of targets.

Arsenal are planning to sign a new central defender in the summer and are interested in Van Dijk and Ajax 22-year-old Joel Veltman.

  16. Celtic: 4 Reasons Why Stokes And Griffiths Can Form A Great Partnership

    by Mark James

While Celtic still enjoy their unbeaten run and extend their clean sheet record, a significant development within training could potentially be starting to flourish, and that is the partnership of Leigh Griffiths and Anthony Stokes.

In the recent 3-0 home win over St Johnstone, Griffiths made his first start in a Celtic shirt. Despite not scoring (he had a goal wrongly disallowed), he showed us reasons other than his finishing that he could offer our team, and that is a strong partnership with Stokes. Stokes managed to bag a hat-trick, which many Celtic fans were delighted about as he had not being playing well at all in games previous, rarely scoring and often looking stuck for creative ideas in his attacking game. And I believe the reason was Griffiths – he and Leigh just clicked right away.

Some of the link up play between the two strikers was reminiscent of when Hooper was in his early days at the club. Stokes had also joined at the start of the same season, and they both quickly formed a strong partnership that was, at times, deadly. A 9-0 thrashing of Aberdeen at home sticks in the memory; they were faultless, both grabbing a hat-trick each which could not have been done without the service provided to each other.

So, in the hope that the recent game against St Johnstone has sparked a wonderful front partnership in the making, here’s the four key reasons why Griffiths and Stokes can hit it off big time.

    4. Left Foot, Right Foot

    Jeff Holmes/PA Wire/Press Association Images

Contrary to the Stokes/Hooper partnership, the introduction of Griffiths along side Anthony up front gives us two strikers that offer a strong left foot and a strong right foot, respectively. This may seem slightly irrelevant to some, but it comes with a couple of benefits.

The first one being that it gives the rest of the team a bit of knowledge and understanding about what kind of ball ether striker will want to run onto. If you’re passing to Stokes, he’ll want it on his right, and for Griffiths, his left. Play it to Griffiths’ right, and he can use his pace to cut in and take it on his left-foot at speed to wrong-foot and beat the defender, and vice versa for Stokes. Most Celtic strikers in recent years have been prominently right-footed, so passing the ball with the motive for them to control with their right has always been more favoured. Now that we have both, more types of passes can be played to the strikers which could previously have looked a little risky. It all depends on their positioning on the field of course, and that brings me to my next point.

Due to the type of ball either striker will want, they are probably going to occupy different sides of the field. You would expect Griffiths to occupy the left-hand side of the field when attacking, and the opposite for Stokes. After some time, midfielders like Stefan Johansson and Kris Commons who like to play long balls will have more knowledge of where their strikers will be when moving forward, as well as knowing what kind of pass they would want. Also, if the strikers can occupy their ‘side’ over a number of games, switching it up at times would provide a bit of surprise to defenders, who no-doubt do a lot of homework on how Celtic attack.

Another point to make is that they’re both established free-kick takers, so a left and right footed pair hanging over the ball is another benefit, although this doesn’t have much to do with them as strikers, and there are other very established free-kick specialists in the team too.

    3. Similar Styles

Something that really struck me when watching Leigh Griffiths play for Hibs is that he’s almost a carbon copy of Stokes, except with a lot more pace. Physically, they’re both strong and powerful players with a bullet shot, but what is more similar is their mentality.

They’re both impact players. Impact players have the ability to turn a game on it’s head within few minutes in a match, and not just from the subs bench. Against Kilmarnock a couple years back, Celtic were 3-0 down at half time. Every Celtic fan remembers this match for what happened in the second half. Stokes had actually been playing woeful in the first half – missing an open goal from about 3 yards and some other big chances. Not many Celtic fans expected him to then score twice with two unbelievable quick strikes to bring it back to 3-2, which helped us on our way to equalise before the final whistle with a Mulgrew header.

Meanwhile, at the end of his time at Hibs last season, Griffiths grabbed his whole team by the scruff of the neck and almost single-handedly won the Scottish cup final for his team after being 3-0 down after half an hour against Div 1 Falkirk, with the second of his 2 goals being the match winner in extra time (and what a goal it was from distance). Apart from Alex Harris’ wonder strike that got Hibs off the mark in the game, Griffiths was like a talisman and provided the energy that his team needed to get over the finishing line.

This combination of determination and power that they both have is something that I would absolutely love them to show as a pair up front for Celtic. If they can generate a bit of form and show these attributes together, they could be a frightful force up front in the league and in Europe.

    2. Quick, Creative Thinkers

Some of you may think I could have included this in the last page as it is an attribute that they share, but it deserves it’s own focus as it’s not necessarily about them as goal-scorers. It’s about their build up play. Stokes and Griffiths are players that love to innovate on the pitch, using their creativity to catch a defence off-guard, and what makes it successful most of the time is their decision speed in doing so.

I and many Celtic fans saw it in the St Johnstone game at the weekend. The first goal by Stokes was set up by a clever back heal flick by Griffiths, followed by a forward run that pealed the Saints defence away to give Stokes a sight at goal to shoot and score from distance. He created that, and Stokes created the goals, giving him a hat-trick which I felt was no coincidence – Griffith’s influence was quite clear to see.

Of course we’ve only seen a glimpse of this notion, but I’m confident we’ll see both strikers showing some creative spark which they have been demonstrating in previous seasons, and combine to become an unpredictable and effective strike force that frustrate defenders to no end.

    1. They Both Have Something To Prove

This is what can bring them together in their quest for goals. They both have something to prove, but for different reasons. Griffiths needs to prove that despite him being a cheap alternative to other thigh profile European targets, he is good enough for Celtic. However, Stokes is in his 4th season at Parkhead, and in recent games has looked lost. Since Hooper left, he has not been able to successfully or consistently gel with another player. Lennon has tried getting him to link up with Samaras, but due to the big Greek’s frustrating reluctance to pass, Stokes has had to try and apply a bit more selfishness to be involved in a goal, which of course has decreased his level of performance and ironically lowered his goal ratio.

Now that Griffiths is here, Stokes has the opportunity to establish the kind of partnership he had with Hooper that made them a force to be feared. Additionally, Griffiths probably needs a partner to aid his development at Celtic. The quicker this happens, the more confidence both players will build, and hopefully we won’t have to rely on so many goals from midfield and defence in the future.

Celtic fans, is there anything else you think these two have in common? Do you think they’ll form a successful partnership up front? Or do you think their similar styles will cancel each other out rather than aid their play? Let us know what you think below.

  17. Celtic Underground article by St Anthony.

A few days ago I had the privilege of interviewing Joe Miller regarding his career and recalling great memories from the past for both of us. The interview is on the site and if you recall the years around the centenary season then it’s definitely worth a listen.

However the main reason for Joe to come on the podcast was to advertise and inform us of the newly formed Celtic Formers Players Association in which Joe is playing a leading part in. The main purpose of the new group is to use social media to unite the players of the past and to organise activities to raise money for charities. There are a number of big Clubs in the UK who already have an association such as this and it’s hoped that the new Celtic one can emulate their success and even surpass it.

Joe explained that former Celtic players play charity games all over the world and he hopes that the club will embrace the FPA and provide a little assistance. When the FPA play games they play in a hooped strip but it’s hoped that Celtic will allow them to play in the current Celtic strips. In an era where Celtic are keen to grow their brand then it makes sense to utilise the use of the FPA in their games and spread the good name of Celtic wherever they may play.

Joe also explained that Zinedine Zidane and Fabio Cannavaro are active in organising charity games for ex players of Real Madrid and Juventus and it would be wonderful for the Celtic fans to watch some old legends of the game in aid of a charitable purpose. Few clubs have raised more or charity through the years than Celtic and these games would generate tremendous support and income. The Celtic charity fund is something we are al very proud of and we saw with the Stilian Petrov game recently just how much money a charity Celtic match can raise for a good cause.

It’s no secret that current Celtic players, especially the foreigners, will not attend supporters functions in the way that ex Celtic players used to do. It’s galling to think that we idolise these guys and pay them five figure sums per week and yet they snub the very people who pay their wages. Ex players are called upon more and more to attend fans functions so it makes sense for the ex players to organise themselves into a unit to help assist attending supporters’ events

There are many ex Celtic players who have had great careers and yet have no current contact with the club or who don’t even attend present day Celtic matches. Joe hopes that the FPO can reach out to these guys and bring them back to the fold and there are also stories of ex Celtic men who are having varying difficulties in life and it’s hoped the FPO would be able to raise funds to assist with such deserving cases.

The idea of the FPO is still in it’s infancy but it was clear to me that Joe Miller is a man of great energy and he deserves every encouragement with this new venture. If anyone from Celtic is reading this then I would encourage them to give Joe and the FPO every encouragement and assistance.

Good luck to Joe Miller and the FPO. We should all wish them well.

  18. Zbyszek

    19:51

    Good morning to you.

First point, good to see you back. I wish better times for your family and for yourself.

I am an immigrant to Russia myself. If I don’t accept the basic way of life here then I cannot complain when people don’t accept me. For example, if I don’t give my seat to a women on the underground, as is the custom here, then I can expect to be scolded by the locals for it. Accepting the laws of a country is basic common sense. Accepting the way of life is common decency if one wants to have social cohesion. You are right to be scared: the hostility to immigrants here can be all-consuming. Is it all the fault of ethnic Russians? No. Life is more complicated. However, as someone who has sympathy with those who need to go abroad to seek work; it can be upsetting to see some of the abuse which immigrants receive here. On my first trip to Moscow, a local berated an Uzkek cleaner for being an immigrant. It was horrible. Yet immigrants, such as myself, must at least try to learn the language and integrate. Otherwise they can expect intolerance. Human nature does not change in that respect. Poles are no different. The British are no different. They don’t like foreigners who don’t integrate.

I am well aware, despite not being a Russian speaker, of how some people here call those from the south. The fact that Islamic terrorists have a habit of killing innocent Russians is one factor but certainly not the only one. Personally, I find it difficult to relate to the use of language but I don’t condemn them. Those from the south also have words for others. That is again human nature. Social attitudes are very different here to the West. Decades of Marxism is one reason for that. Some American friends and I discussed this in relation to the gay subject. They have sympathy with the Russian mentality because decades of unnatural Marxism kept the whole country back in many respects. They also respect that Russians have different values to those from the West. Lecturing them doesn’t work. That only serves to annoy and to then provoke examples of American/British hypocrisy.

Your football examples were not surprising. Poland also has a problem with racism as do other countries. Guess what? Many English football supporters chant about The Holocaust. It would be unfair to castigate the whole country for such idiocy.

Do I share the thoughts? Some. America is interfering here. The fascist element is a part of the protesting movement. Trying to understand much of what is going on there is best left to those with greater political nous than me though. That is my answer to Neganon.

Regarding one other point, some in Ukraine still wish to have ties with Russia. Thanks to Stalin, a significant amount of people there are ethnic Russians. In any case, the ties can never be lost. You also mentioned the Russian mentality about Ukraine. Yes, many Russians still consider Ukraine, Latvia, Uzbekistan and others to be still ‘Russian’. Yet others couldn’t care less. “Let them try the EU cake and see how sweet it is” is one way to paraphrase the mentality.

I wish you well Zbyszek. Your knowledge in this area obviously surpasses my own but I just want to give some perspective from here. Terrific to see you posting again. I won’t post again for some time but will keep up to date with the blog. Apologies to CQN readers who aren’t interested in this topic.

Seriously, bud. The site thrives on different but informed opinion. People who rail against the mainstream are particularly welcome,at least in my opinion.

Stick around, bud. You know it makes sense!!

  20. Bobby, no flouncing. I have never flounced! My next post was going to be tomorrow. This place just becomes too addictive and believe it or not, one can appreciate that readers and other posters may become tired of my random thoughts. Take care Bobby.

One point to Z which I forgot to mention. Zbysek, you mentioned democracy. The protestors wish to be a part of the EU. Democracy. EU. Hiliarious. Corruption levels, lack of accountability(in every sense) and unelected bureaucrats. That’s the EU for you.
