When directors and creditors are one and the same

1069

Thanks to everyone who contributed questions for the Forum last night.  It was an open, frank and productive meeting.  Draft minutes will be distributed to attendees to be checked for accuracy before being formalised, after which the meeting’s outcomes will be made public through various outlets.

One thing which is evident, and goes largely unacknowledged, is the significant contribution made by Auldheid in building the channels needed for constructive dialogue between the club and supporters.  Well done, Pat.

I see Neil Lennon in the news being “flattered” after Norwich City chief exec, and former Celtic commercial director, David McNally, told the media he believed it only prudent he keeps an eye open for a new manager, should Chris Hughton ‘leave’.  Neil answered well, refused to comment on a job which is already filled, while setting a standard answer, suitable whether he was interested or not.  There is no point firmly denying interest in a job as a subsequent refusal to do so for a different position would leave too much information on the table.

McNally is right, it is only prudent you keep an eye on these things, but can you imagine how Hughton feels when reading this stuff, or what the resulting speculation will do to the club’s relegation chances?  There is now far too much information on the table now for Hughton to be effective.

A football manager needs authority and respect, Houghton has been denied both.  Norwich should do the decent thing and pay the man his contract before they sleepwalk into the lower leagues.

It’s funny how different people read the same thing in different ways.  An announcement that a club is in discussions with a couple of existing shareholders to borrow money to provide working capital is self-explanatory in most respects.

The announcement by Newco Rangers this morning establishes that the club needs a fresh injection of money to pay its bills.  We all knew this, but the sharp-eyed will also have noted that this loan will create the club’s two major creditors.  No bank will lend to Newco, their creditors will be limited to trade suppliers, HMRC and other football clubs, all pretty low values.  This £1.5m loan is likely to give the lenders sufficient control to vote through anything they desire, should administration occur.  The controlling directors and creditors will be one and the same.

Newco Rangers has been rag-dolled since its inception by various pressure groups within the broader family who seem determined to stamp on whatever green shoots of recovery exist.  What it really needs is the kind of strong leadership this directors-creditors group can provide, leaders who will do the right thing, take the necessary medicine and stand firm against the quislings.  While others tried to get the club for free, they paid their money, continue to do so, and deserve the chance to run their club as they see fit.  For what it’s worth I think the club and its current controllers are a perfect fit.  I hope they use their largest creditor status to protect their interests.

Congratulations to STV’s Peter Smith (aged 12 ½), who scooped the Royal Television Society’s Young Talent of the Year award, achieved partly because he was prepared and able to ask hard questions, when many of his elder peers would rather eat their own toe nails.  He’s still not uncovered that Dallas Cowboys email, so more work still to be done.

  1. Given the sentiments displayed in the article on Joe Millers “Former Players Association”,is it not a sad reflection on the disconnect between present day Players and Supporters, and is this,in fact, the reality?

I have never been a member of a Supporters Club, but attended many functions organised by Clubs,P.O.Y.dances,Speaker Nights,Quiz Nights etc.

Do Supporters Clubs still get access to players for these events?and is their anyone at Celtic Park responsible for organising them,I remember stories about Jock Stein delegating players to attend such events or else!;)

Back home tonight and my wife was telling me that the scottish government children’s bill. Apparently this bill, amongst other laudable aims will appoint a state guardian oveR every child in Scotland. This remarkable concept threatens the rights of parents to look after their children without interference from the state.

Note only is this reminiscint of the OBF act but on a wider and far more frightening scale buts it’s incredibly sinister. The scottish parliament has now officially gone mad. Now I find myself as bedfellows of some mad religious groups but they are right.

Who the hell are these these guardians and what the hell do they know about our children?

Is this the future of an independent Scotland?

I am not trying to be cheeky but I would suggest that you do some research before posting the above crap on the Scottish Government, as some fholk on this site may take what you submitted as being read when it is completely and utterly wrong. I haven’t read back and if someone else has picked up on this please accept my apologies.

Now I’m no expert on the Named Person Act, but I do know this is not an SNP initiative but a UN one from 1978, and it was the Labour Government in 2004 which initiated the legislation and it is now coming to fruition.

This might not fit in with anti SNP stance but it is true, and no Party had opposed it.

not too sure that Efe should be shouting out how we are going to stiff the cousins of Sevco. Its not an approach I would take playing any team and sounds a bit arrogant.

Anyway hope the weather is fair for the game and so is the MIB Kevin Clancy, and c’mon Ireland in their game against a bunch of arrogant poseurs !

I’ve just had a convo about that with a grumpy tabloid reading Tim mate.

I showed him the actual quotes and he’s changed his tune.

  5. John O’Neil,

I have been reading your fascinating articles with interest over the last few days. I must say well written pieces, although I cannot agree in entirety. ( No surprise there )

My wife’s mate was the AMEX manager in Moscow for two years and absolutely loved both the people and the place. I can understand the “When in Rome do as the Romans do” mentality but tolerance and integration must be a two way street.

One of the things immigrants get criticised here for is the lack of language and yet ex-pats often make no attempt to learn the lingo. One law for us but another for everyone else.?

You talk about a very conservative society and giving up seats for woman as a custom which brings me to the crux of this reply.

Its a funny old world where a former communist dictatorship seems to have more fundamental Christian values and have more empathy with the Christian Churches than the more traditional nations.

What is happening in Ukraine is heart-breaking, is there a lesson for us somewhere in the mix.?

Keep up the excellent work with your articles and HH to you.

    Changed days indeed!

I remember speaking to Big Billy (during the Centenary Season) – where possible he delegated 2 players from the First Team Squad to attend every official Supporters Club dinner that year.

I think the words ‘where possible’ are still apt.

Obviously you are gonna struggle get a player these days on an eve of a game or the same day as a game but some do still attend.

The last POTY dance I organised was at Livingston FC. They have a cracking function room under one of the stands and we only managed to get Paul Lambert to attend as our guest of honour because he was the Livi manager at the time. I knew a few people who worked at the ground and puled some strings.

Having a dinner dance for the CSC is vital. It gives the members a chance to get their short and tie on and enjoy an evening with their wife or partner with a Celtic slant but also at a high quality. A dinner, a speaker or guest, band and or disco and some singing near the end.

If you have no guest of honour it is very difficult to convince people to come. It’s not impossible but it makes it harder.

We were lucky to get Paul Lambert. He was a superb guest and stayed longer than he had to. Not the best speaker in the world but signed a lot of things for the kids and talked well and warmly about Celtic. We got some Irish dancers along and they didn;t charge us to my shock but asked for collection buckets to go round. They were superb and really were a hit with the ladies. It balances up the night. I could see why they insisted on bockets going round when I saw the amounts going in them! We had a superb local band who have played for us a few times. They play all the ballads and rebels but they were under strict instructions to play the ballads and Celtic songs only. It’s a dinner dance not a rebel night. The disco rounds the night off and Paul and his wife even got up to dance with some of the members. It was a cracking night. The problem we had was the next year. Contacting Celtic is a waste of time. We were not getting a player. Getting a former player was difficult too. We managed to get a contact for John Hartson. The big man gave us a call and he was coming. We had set the wheels in motion and started to organise the event. Anyone who has done this knows it takes months. John unfortunately then couldn;t make it and our plans were dashed for a number of reasons and we haven;t had one since. I no longer go on the bus after getting married and moving to Edinburgh and I don;t think anyone has the time to try and get this done but what Joe Miller is trying to do should be applauded. Getting a former player who is Celtic to the core is better than a player who may be in the first team squad but won;t give you the Celtic feeling and the type of speech and time the punters want.

I hope it is a huge success. The CSC’s need it!

  12. You may remember back to 2011 when CQN managed to help a young family who we’re going through a dreadful time after the birth of their twin boys Shaeden and Cian who were both born prematurely. Unfortunately young Cian passed on to heaven while wee Shaeden fought for his life. Both boys were the the sons of a CQN poster of that time Ton-Che-Dan and his wife.

If you remember back to that year and the sad passing of Pablo, a collection was made on CQN to bring Steve’s body back from Holland to allow his kids to lay their dad to rest. As ever CQN rallied together and raised way more than was required and with the agreement of CQN and both Steve’s kids we were able to help Ton Che Dan and his good lady wife.

Danny’s wife gave birth to twin baby boys a number of weeks before their due date. Unfortunately one of the boys, Cian, soon passed away after birth and it was touch and go for a number of months for Shaeden. During this time both Danny and his wife were caring for their son in hospital in Liverpool far from their home in Blackpool and Danny has to give up his work to be in Liverpool for his family. The extra money raised for Steve was sent to Danny and his family to help them through this difficult periods in their lives.

Here is a wee link back to a post from Ton-Che-Dan in 2011just to remind you:

The objectionable aspect of the legislation is the state allocating a functionary to have involvement in the life of every child.

That goes beyond any UN policy.

It crosses a line between the state and the individual.

It’s also pointless. Those tragic cases where children have been neglected and abused happened in spite of state involvement not because of a lack of state involvement. This legislation won’t help.

The legislation does however does suggest a degree of consistency in the SNP’s authoritarian, centralised and intolerant approach to public affairs.
