Where did it all go wrong for Ronny?

624

So where did it all go wrong for Ronny Delia?  First of all, it didn’t all go wrong.  He won two leagues, and if you think it was impossible to lose those, just think back to a team in last season’s Championship, who enjoyed an equally superior income over their competitors, but lost the league to Hearts by the length of the M8.

It was just as possible for Aberdeen to win the league this season or last, as it was Hearts (reeling only months after going into administration) to win the Championship last season.  Ronny delivered the primary requirement each season – the league title, but he failed on the second tier requirement – qualify for the Champions League.

Soon after the Legia Warsaw debacles Ronny reflected on the question about whether it was right to ask his new team to adopt his tactics, instead of waiting until he’d recruited players to fit his system.

Two years on we are still remarkably short of players to play his system.  Innumerable wide midfield players have come and gone, with many still lingering in the stands.  We have an enviable list of creative mids in the squad, yet none have been able to dislodge Stefan Johansen, who by his own admission is having a disappointing season.

Then there’s the striker roles.  Leigh Griffiths has been a significant reason why we’ll be crowned champions again over the next few weeks, but he’s pretty much on his own.  No one has been able to put pressure on him.  For a while Leigh had to wait until John Guidetti and Stefan Scepovic dropped out of the picture, but you’ll struggle to recall this season’s striker arrivals, Carlton Cole and Colin Kazim-Richards, three years from now.

For these reasons, we can say recruitment is where it all went wrong for Ronny.  It’s not about 4-2-3-1, half the top teams in Europe play with that formation, nor is it (the now abandoned) zonal marking system, also the dominant top-level defensive system.

We’ve simply recruited the wrong players for creative midfield and striker positions.  It’s also subtler than to just say we’ve not recruited good enough players.  Some who have escaped Celtic Park after arriving in the last 22 months have done pretty well elsewhere.  Guidetti and Scepovic are La Liga strikers, while Jo Inge Berget also made it to the Bernabeu this season.

None of them are great, but I suspect we made them look poorer than they are.  Kazim-Richards is unlikely to trouble Sergio Ramos next season, but there’s more to him that what we’ve seen, or will see.  We’ve been a place careers diminish disproportionately.

On the positive side, Ronny brought the best out of Leigh Griffiths.  He moved the disintegrating Emilio Izaguirre aside for 18-year-old sensation, Kieran Tierney, (the biggest winner on Sunday).  And he finally resolved some of the least-organised set-piece defending known to man with the recruitment of Erik Sviatchenko (on this point, you cannot over-estimate the value of adding one good player to a team).

One thought crossed my mind several times this season: If he hadn’t spent so much money fruitlessly trying to make one system work, would he have acknowledge he was on the wrong road and changed tactics?

He backed himself into a corner so stuck with the same faltering policy at Celtic, but surely, surely, if he walks into another job soon, unhindered by that wasteful use of budget, he’d not follow the same tactical strategy which failed him?

As for the notion that it was all just down to RD and that he was the principal figure in duff/bizarre player recruitment policies that predate his arrival…..well excuse me as I struggle to get comfy because of all the buttons on my back!

DD has allowed CFC to fall into a state of significant disrepair. Poor business practice. Appalling football custodianship.

As for RD’s public performance in front of the media today, he showed class. Hasn’t worked as a game say manager but there’s so much more that’s rotten to the core.

    5 Questions on Celtic ..

    1) Celtic currently have approx 27,000 Shareholders = 5% voting share ..

    Dermot owns 29% directly and influences 66% = 95% in total ..

So Dermot and a few friends can out vote 27,000 Shareholders

plus 40,000 Season Ticket Holders who don’t have a vote ..

Allowing for approx 12,000 who are both still leaves 55,000.

So Dermot and a few friends can out vote 55,000 Supporters ..

What accountability does this provide for the club ..

    2) If Dermot wanted to increase his shareholding and exceed 30%

and then bid for complete control who would then protect the Club ..

3)Should Celtic be a Club to be traded and sold to the highest

bidder when the time is right ..

    4) 40,000 – 50,000 Celtic Supporters give the Club

approx £20-£25 Million per annum depending on Europe etc ..

This accounts for approx 40-50% of Club Revenues ..

Should Supporters expect 50% voting share for giving 50% revenue ..

    5) Should all Supporters have an Equal Vote, or continue

to be treated with contempt and as Second Class Supporters ..

That is the very reason I always gave when arguing that Fergus’ idea of a PLC structure did not and could not ever guarantee that the fans would always own Celtic.

I understand why it was done, agree with it as a way to get Fergus’ money out and a way in which to spread the ownership out – especially at the first share offer – but it was never going to ensure that the fans owned the club in the way he described.

I am glad Ronnie came over with some class yesterday.

No matter what we all do in life, or whether we succeed or fail, it always has to be remembered that it is not a crime to do the best you can and not succeed for one reason or another.

Human beings are human beings and we all make mistakes from time to time, have feelings, can get hurt and sometimes have to dust ourselves down, pick ourselves up and get on with the new day as best we can no matter what happened yesterday and no matter what is going on in the background of our lives.

At the Celtic FC Foundation Charity Sleepout, Ronnie came over to those of us who were sleeping out for the homeless and made a short speech.

It was his birthday and there had been a few drinks taken.

In the course of his speech he said that no matter what you did in life, succeed or fail, it was most important that we looked after and looked out for one another.

I thought then, and think now, “This is a classy individual and a man whom I respect” – I hope he goes on to achieve success in the future.

  30. Good morning friends from a dry and bright, though cloudy East Kilbride.

If Aberdeen match our results over the next 2 weekends, we’ll remain 8 points clear of them when we play them with 3 games to go and therefore have a chance to win our 5th league title in a row at home. However, I won’t shed any tears if St Johnstone beat them tonight.

  31. I wonder what preparations are taking place in the boardroom with regard to recruiting our new manager. I sincerely hope their is someone with a good football brain assisting. This next appointment is critical. I’m hoping it’s David Moyes, many will have their own favourite, but I think someone like DM would be prepared to ask the right questions to ensure the board’s ambition were aligned to his own. Another project type manager would most likely be more reluctant to dig deep and ascertain exactly what input he will have on the key decision making.

So what would a Moyes type need to know?

    1. I’d imagine he would already have an idea of who he would want as his assistant (s). Would that be a given?

    2. You would als have to assume he’d want at least 5-6 players brought in almost immediately and would wish to release more than that. If that was going to incur a net spend of £20m to £25m, will the money be made available? If not, how much will be available?

    3. Will he have full authority on all football matters ?

I think that just those 3 questions alone would let a new manager assess whether the position is the right move for them.

It’s likely, that if for example we interviewed an Alan Stubbs type, they’d be less likely to make the kind of demand that a Moyes or Keane would.

I truly hope DD will be prepared to back this next appointment by sanctioning the expenditure.

I’m sure if he does, with the right man at the helm, those CL nights are not far away.
