Why players betting on games is a serious offence

1618

How do you find out that a footballer is betting on the game?  They don’t walk into bookies and hand a slip over at the counter, this stuff is all done on smartphones or by telephone.

Betting information is protected by the Data Protection Act, the SFA have no authority to ask and bookmakers have no authority to tell, even if they know a player is breaking SFA rules.

Even if a player sits in the dressing room, and announces that he’s just bet on the match about to take place, and all his team-mates reported him, he would be able to dismiss the charge on the basis that his comments were a joke.  No one could prove otherwise.

But, very specific charges are levelled at players.

The betting industry survives on the quality of their information being better than that of their customers.  “Are you likely to win at the weekend?”, “Any inside info on who the new manager will be?”, “Who’s struggling to be fit for Saturday (and therefore unlikely to be first scorer)?”

If you are a player, you have the inside line on a market worth hundreds of millions each year.  Football has an unhealthy relationship with bookmakers, at some clubs, the betting partner has their own lounge and has full access to the players’ lounge.  Many players are big gamblers and some have big incomes.  They are both significant clients for bookies and potential sources of inside information.  Like many big gamblers, they are offered special odds, not available to the general public.

Let me tell you one way of catching a player who is gambling on football.  He is tempted away from his old bookie to one who has become friendly with, possibly after giving his former bookie a bum steer on a striker who was supposed to be injured.  The former bookie then ‘discovers’ that the name on one of their accounts doesn’t match the name on the linked bank account, and that this account holder is a footballer.

The bookie is now officially concerned that illegal match fixing is going on.  With the possibility of criminality (even if it is without basis), they can alert the authorities.  That would teach the player a lesson for leaving, while making money through advantageous odds and feeding bum information back, and destroy whatever competitive advantage the other bookie has.

Does anyone know of any other way a specific charge of gambling on football could be raised?

Maybe the players are all just daft laddies.  Maybe the SFA decline to release reports into players gambling because there is nothing to see in them.  Maybe you can break the rules on betting but not be punished because it’s a silly rule.

You don’t need to be match fixing to be involved in serious criminality when dealing with a bookmaker.  The football watching public need transparency from the SFA on this issue, no matter how much money floods into the game from the gambling industry.

The Sunday Herald add is the least we can do to voice our opinion on the great Sevco lie.

I noticed some opposition on here and strangely too on etims. I suppose the timing of it could have been better though , perhaps done at the start of the season.

Let’s not forget that if the roles were reversed we’d be subjected to far worse, damned by every msm outlet, not to mention the huns themselves, on a daily basis, for the last three years.

Never underestimate how heavy a price CFC would have been made to pay for swindling hmrc to win trophies.

In fact we would have no breath left to even make the absurd ‘same club’ claim.

Never again at the back of the bus csc.

    —————————————————————————————————————-

I must agree with a great deal of what you say.

Of course, had we been in the ‘Rangers’ position, we know that we would have been ‘hung out to dry’ – the SMSM have form on this type of thing and their would have been no ‘spinning’ by them, that we were the same club.

Their dead company/living club nonsense is risible and insults the intelligence of everyone forced to listen or read the same.

My opposition to the ad has always been that we are getting down in then cesspit with Sevco, and could be tarred by the same brush, as the SMSM will seek to label the whole farce an “Old Firm dust-up”.

Then there is the timing. We are fast approaching what may be the most explosive Celtic fixture against them in a generation – do we really need something to ‘fan the flames’? – Why now? The only reason can be to goad the Ibrox hoard in the run-up to the match – it’s irresponsible, wrong-headed and asking for trouble.

The usual suspects, who have a go at me on here, do not realise that if, God forbid, there is a serious incident between publication tomorrow Sunday, and next week’s match with even the most tenuous link to the ad, the blame will be laid at the Celtic door and all the surrounding crap regarding Ibrox will be forgotten in a flurry of sanctimonious reporting by the media. When the Ibrox disaster can be trotted out as a reason not to use the stadium to underwrite funds to keep the club alive, it just shows us the mindset of the Ibrox support and their mates in the media.

Celtic, although it has nothing to do with those misguided individuals whose only motivation seems to be to shout na na na na na na at the ‘Rangers’ supporters, will have its hard won worldwide reputation sullied, in the same way that similarly motivated and selfish people have had us fined and warned by UEFA on FIVE occasions.

Celtic disowned these people and labelled them as not being Celtic fans – how indeed can anyone claim to be a Celtic fan when they know that what they do for their own gratification could have a disastrous effect on our club.

We are giving them, should there be an incident, the opportunity to claim the moral high ground, and they and the laptop loyal will waste no time in ‘pointing the finger’ at Celtic, should something ‘crop up’

This ad is not about “the truth”, it is about a gang of so-called Celtic supporters putting their own agenda before the wellbeing of the club and the vast majority of its fans,

  2. Ghuys I think it is pointless trying to second guess what is happening or going to happen over “there” Let the circus/shambles play itself out and concentrate on our team. Hail Hail Hebcelt

What is the situ on Red cards for Celtic players affecting them playing in sevco game?

    ———————

Hmmm….red card could be the bet of the day.

But Canamalar is right….even if we are playing them at sarcastaball, we’d poke them.

  7. Five weeks ago Ross County showed that they can`t be taken for granted. Hopefully the Celts will keep their good form into today.

Aberdeen play on 7th February but a win today will keep the team top until the St Johnstone match on the 14th.

  8. Alfie how long have you supported Celtic and in that time how many times have we been dragged into or blamed for others actions!

To say winning captains and others should not have created the advert which tells the truth about what has been happening over the cheating years comes across as if you are happy with the lie continuing and we do nothing about it.

Well done to winning captains, aulheid and others who are at least trying to do something to improve Scottish football and hopefully out the liars n thieves involved in society.

  9. AlfieNoakes

    @ 10:42

Have to disagree with your post, the reality is that the majority of Huns who are likely to pick up the Sunday Herald this week will really see the advert for what it is. An exercise in attention seeking and an attempt at cyberdom oneupmanship. The truth is that the majority of Celtic supporters are unaware of the publication of the said advert and most likely don’t give a damn about it. Most of the Celtic supporters that I have spoken to are only interested in giving them a doing on the park on the 1st February be they a deid club or or a new club. I don’t think the Celtic supporters who actually are going to the game, and who vastly outnumber the hand wringers who aren’t ,will celebrate any goal any differently from how the did 3 years ago. As for the violence, this will not be because of the advert but it will be perpetrated by both sides due to the fact that west of Scotland publicans who are out to make the biggest profit possible no matter the cost when the extremely inebriated leave their premises.

Bring it on next week I know the majority of Celtic supporters are looking forward to it.

  10. You just wonder what negative stories the media will broadcast or print about us over the next week or so. They usually wait until a big fixture is the next game we play. They must be desparate and hurting so much to do so before we’ve even played Ross County.

  15. Alfie Noakes,

If a small group of Celtic fans want to place an ad to say they died , fine it’s their call.

Personally I would not do it . Rangers were liquidated….dead full stop.

  16. Looking forward to seeing our team again, let’s hope they keep the momentum going. 3-0 to keep the wee mhan’s predictions going; no injuries and no red cards will be perfect.

The truth will be in the pudding……come a week on Sunday 25000 Celtic supporters will be at Hampden for an old firm game, potentially you could fit in another 25000 who want to be there

Come back to me next Sunday night with the figures (with a little help from the administrators) of how many individual posters were logged onto this blog for the duration of the game

  23. It is absurd to speak on behalf of a self perceived ” majority” . My own sample contains people who are going , people who will watch it in the boozer, people who will watch it in the house , people who will not watch it all. and people who intend to get the hell out of Dodge for the day . If I include myself , 100% of the people I know who went to Lisbon in 1967 do not intend to watch the game,
