Why we can attract top French youth talent

962

Olivier Ntcham stole the show with a stunning free-kick goal for France under-21s against Bulgaria last night. Celtic’s midfielder came on as a 75th minute substitute, not long after teammate Moussa Dembele was subbed off.

Olivier has been capped by France at every age group since under-16. It is a mark of the expectations we have for him, and Moussa, that they are exposed to the demands of the Allianz Arena, despite Olivier having less than 50 senior games under his belt, and Moussa having less than 100.

At similar stages of their development, expectations of Kenny Dalglish and Henrik Larsson were considerably less, while contemporaries, Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic took years to reach peak form.

What we have seen from Olivier, and to a lesser extent Moussa, is a glimpse of their potential. Playing for Celtic, with its unique mix of expectations to win every domestic game, indifferent domestic opponents, and regular Champions League football, provides a great opportunity to polish potential into the finished article.

Young players will get first team opportunities in less demanding games, while 18-year-olds like Anthony Ralston will be asked to get stuck in against PSG. I doubt any other club can offer a better environment to develop talent, which explains why we can attract Moussa, Olivier and Odsonne Edouard.

  1. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Big Jimmy, that 3 2 game against what was Rangers , was the best, in terms each team playing goodfootball, I have been at when we played them .

It was a great game . My pals and I were equally as knackered as some of the players after that game .

Paul McStay won two crunching tackles in the build up to our first two goals. The much maligned Graeme Sinclair did a good blocking job on fatso Johnstone trying to get to Murdo at our winning goal.

The league cup final 6 weeks later was played in similar conditions . We totally outplayed them and should have scored more than two that day. The original huns were desperate to beat us and signed the odious Gordon Duffield Smith on loan to bolster their team.

The 82/83 season started incredibly well but defeats to Motherwell at Fir Park so soon after winning at Ibrox ,Aberdeen at Pittodrie and losing at home to a 10 man Dundee United in last two months of the season , contributed to us coming second in the league.

Between September 82 and 1/1/83 we had won away at Ajax, beaten the Huns twice and Aberdeen at Pittodrie but fell away after all these great victories .

  2. GFTB,

I reckon Brendan is doing alright.

The game in Paris is Massive. It might not seem so but it is to Brendan.

    Celtic is Good.

  3. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

In my previous post beaten the huns twice , should have read beaten the Huns 3 times between September 82 and 1/1/83

  4. DALLAS DALLAS WHERE THE HECK IS DALLAS on 12TH NOVEMBER 2017 8:33 AM

    …………Cheers mate..that 3-2 victory that day v the Huns I think a lot of Tims have maybe forgotten about..maybe I’m wrong ?

I watched the highlights yesterday morning on Youtube before that Drunken Hoot ( Great Day)….and I can still remember who I was with that day ( including my Bluenose mate Bobby,,,,who went to the Huns end obviously but we got him in the car after the match to go for a few beers), and he was SICK…cos as you say The Huns played weel that day ( as they did have some good players)….but they NEVER had The MAESTRO….Paul McStay.

I always loved The Maestro…but that day in the mud..I don’t think I ever saw him tackle so hard and clean as he did that day….The Maestro was indeed Majestic.

Whit a game..and again like most Celtic v huns games…I’ve kicked every baw…and came oot totally knackered…screaming for a beer !

  5. Having been a regular attender of the upper tier of the JS stand for 20 years I can say on good authority that the only way an individual could come to any harm on the staircase would be if they actually climbed on the barrier. You shouldn’t need to tell anyone that is dangerous. Hh

  6. I met a lot of Good men yesterday…and I can’t remember ALL the names and/or Monikers, but I was one of the last to leave McCuills ( which was better than I thought it was gonna be, apart from the wee feckin owner Nicky playing all of HIS music)….I asked him to play some Sam Cooke…didn’t have it…I asked to play a couple of other guys…didn’t have it…wait to I see him today, cos I need to pay a flying visit as I think I lost a key in there last night ?)

Anyways, I enjoyed the Hoopy Hoot…and I will be in the vicinity early this morning as The Tolbooth opens at 11 am…and then I’ll take a walk up to McCuills at 12.30 to see if that key was found…and stay for a beer or two ?

By the way..one of the Barmaids ( SARA) from the BV….was feckin stunningly sexy….I got a couple of wee kissess aff of her…albeit I am old enough to be her Granda…maybe she likes us mature men ?

    Don’t tell her boyfriend !

  7. Well fholks, that was a day. Great afternoon in fine company, meeting up with old acquaintances and many new. Too many too mention, and I would worry about missing someone out. Suffice to say that the craic was grand and it made the trip from Dundee worthwhile. I made the return bus by the skin of my teeth (Bateen Bhoy) and discovered that the departure stance was at the other end of the bus station! Thanks to BMCUWP for arranging the day. HH

  8. Friesdorfer….pleasure to meet u….u were in an objective….meet as many tits fae the blog….u win ;-))

  10. A special wee mention to PHILBHOY and Eddie ( cant remember his moniker)…That was the one mistake I made amongst many. as Eddie was heading up the Gallowgate for more beer, and I should have went with him !!!

Eddie, if you are reading this…I’ll look forward to have a few beers with you once again..you were great company…and a true Glesga character..my kind of guy.

His missus turned him out nice, as like OLDTIM ( also great company) both men were suited and booted in true Glesga Gangster style….at one point I thought I was sitting between the feckin Kray twins ?

    Only Joking.

OLDTIM….the last words you said to me in McCuills were..” Jimmy…I feel a wee bit drunk….I don’t know why” ?

Maybe it was ALL those pesky feckin Gins that you put away ?

HaHa…OLDTIM…yer not a good man….yer a great man…and BMCUWP and his Da…and my other mate BLANTYRE TIM…..All great men….I feel like I have finally found Brothers that I never had.

Right…as like yesterday…I’m gonna play on youtube The McCoys singing ” Hang on Sloopy”, and watch the wee stunner Lisa…dance…then I’ll need another 2/3 cold showers before hitting the pubs in the Saltmarket……

  14. I have good reason to have my wife and daughter meet me at the HOOT and bring me home.

Last night was a classic example of why I shouldn’t be allowed out on my own.

My good lady wakened me on the train and said right darling, this is our stop.

Otherwise God knows where I would have ended up.

  16. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Big Jimmy, good luck at McChuill’s , I hope your key was handed in.

That 3 2 game against that mob was incredible. .

We played them the last day of that season at Ibrox , we won 4 2 afer being 2 nil down at half time.

As our players came back out for the second half, our support gave them all a huge boost with the best and most passionate walk on I’ve ever heard from our support. All our players stood, watching in awe at our supporters backing for them.

We had half the main stand , half the enclosure , the Broomloan and about a quarter of the Govan Stand , all giving our players the backing to beat the horribles mark 1.

Bran McGinley gave us 2 penalties plus we had the bonus of Arthur Montford’s marvellous commentary. Provan, Aitken , McAdam , goal 2 2 , what a game. Arthur is much missed.

  17. BIG PACKY on 12TH NOVEMBER 2017 9:23 AM

  18. DALLAS DALLAS WHERE THE HECK IS DALLAS on 12TH NOVEMBER 2017 9:26 AM

……Your spot on about that 3-2 game, and I remember reading recently one of the Celtic players ( can’t remember who), gave an interview and said that Big Billy at half time in the 2-4 game that you mentioned…said to the Bhoys at half time…” Listen to those Celtic fans singing even though we are getting beat 2-0, ye canny let that Celtic support down”…and Hey feckin presto our Bhoys came out all fired up and scored 4 v the Hun.

    HH

  19. BIG PACKY on 12TH NOVEMBER 2017 9:31 AM

    PHILBHOY,

The key I lost is for the car park at the back of my building…it’s not a great worry cos…..I don’t have a car ?

But one or two local barmaids borrow it from me when they are working and it saves them Ghirls a bit of money in parking fees, so i’m mad with myself for losing it…anyways I hope McCuills cleaners have found it ?

    HH mate..yer a good man

  24. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

    Good Morning one and all.

Just the usual wee note to say thankyou for some great chat and company yesterday in The Blane and then McChuill’s.

As usual, time is the biggest thief and I could only stay for a few hours but had some great, if brief, chat with a lot of folk, and a right good long moan with PF Ayr.

Great to see Paddybhoy looking well, and astounded of forehead to find the Rollercoaster lurkin in the back room of McChuill’s because I would have bet my house and yours that he was in Bristol!

At least that was where he was yesterday morning when I left the house!

One Malloy — Hugh sorry I forgot to introduce you when Ruth came in to spirit me away — I was sure I had done that but maybe not — and it always good to have your company.

Old Tim looking his dapper best, as was Eddie, and the bould Doc was resplendent in his best JP Donleavy like attire.

Too many others to mention but glad to hear Philbhoy got home ok albeit minus the key for the garage which he doesn’t use because he doesn’t have a car — which begs the question as to why he took the bloody thing out of the house in the first place?

Blantyre Tim — hope you kept a good note of those numbers you were given and make sure you add on The Wandering An Teraman, Sipsini, BMCUWP, Paddybhoy, Thunderbirdsarego and Thunder Road.

    I bloody hate CQN handles.

Big Jimmy — yer a hoot!

Right, I’m away to do some damage or maybe get some work done!
