Return to SNP sender, when one becomes six

658

I’m not taking the SPFL- face recognition plan too seriously but that’s not to say the politics behind the suggestion should be ignored. Scottish football has no hooligan problems, compared England or the Continent our game is orderly and sedate. Until recent years there was no such thing as a flare problem, and offensive signing was a thing of the past.

All that changed when the SNP government got involved in 2011. Two managers shouted at each other after a game, three Rangers players were ordered off, and First Minister, Alex Salmond decided a summit was necessary to reign in the game’s wilder elements. What utter tosh.

Three weeks later, Justice Minister, Kenny MacAskill congratulated fans on creating a great atmosphere at the League Cup Final, which was notable for the re-emergence of the previously eradicated Billy Boys song. At an instant MacAskill rebased what was acceptable behaviour at Scottish football.

Since then the game has been trying to put the genie back in the bottle. The arguments were rehearsed in the CQN comments pages and elsewhere, “They are congratulated by the Government for singing The Billy Boys and we can’t sing about nationalist politics”, or words to that effect. Songs which had disappeared from the Celtic support lexicon were soon back and remain. Incalculable damage done by two incompetent clowns.

Since then the Scottish Government and a very small number (very small indeed) of senior officers at Police Scotland decided to subject football fans to the kind of surveillance that would make a military junta of a banana republic blush.

It’s a mess. Officers on the ground readily complain in private, all other political parties pledge to repeal the Offensive Behaviour’ Act, while sheriffs line up to mock cases arising from the Act. Football has been left to pick up the pieces left from a Scottish Government created problem. The Government refuse to accept any liability, will not repeal the Act and having celebrated a new, low, standard for spectator behaviour, seem quite happy with the situation.

Scottish football was doing very well before the Government decided to rebase what is acceptable behaviour. No football authority will succeed in any endeavour if the government is working against it. What the SPFL did was make a clear, if clumsy, attempt to return the problem to sender – the newly disinterested in football Scottish Government.

When one becomes six

I’ve scoured the internet today but cannot see any complaints about Celtic’s alleged “one up front” tactics. This season hasn’t gone to plan, but we’re making an incredible number of chances and scoring a remarkable number of goals.

One up front leaves space for, what is in effect, two wingers on each flank, and an attacking mid able to work inside the box.

    Natknow/ Ernie ….

If you must send something, I would prefer chocolates (although, given my Fatbhoy status at the moment, perhaps flowers would be better) ….

although the way I am feeling at the moment (hungry), I might just pour some ketchup on the flowers and eat them!

    ————————————–

    :-)

Know that feeling! I’ve not joined the CQN diet challenge but let’s just say I have embraced a kind of post-Christmas asceticism that surely will bear benefits. If not, then I give up!

    Best of luck with yours!

  2. 67 European Cup Winners on

Playing 1 up front – really – because we beat Hamilton 8 – 1 !! (one swallow does not make a summer)

For 2 seasons we have played the same 4-2-3-1 system

In Scotland we have “tip toed” past most of the opposition we play (with a few embarrassing moments along the way) I expect us to win the league a cup or two is icing on the cake

As satisfying as last night was – and in fairness to RD so was last Friday – we should not be doing cartwheels

In my opinion the last 2 performances are what we should expect given our resource compared to others in the league

I remain unsure – based on our last 2 European campaigns – that RD can improve us enough to get us into the CL group stages 2 years out of every 3 (my measurement of where we should be – more importantly a financial requirement of what we need)

If the last 2 games are an indication that we have “turned a corner” then no one will be happier than me

But beating Hamilton (brilliant as it was) 8 – 1 does not make a summer

    Rejoice but don’t relax

I know but I think it’s true to say, that where security is concerned Israeli companies often seem to be at the forefront of advances.

Yip – and that’s just the stuff that’s commercially available.

Mind you, I’d be worried if security services had the same capabilities as Glasgow District Council. :-)

  5. Wasnt it an Israeli company who were responsible for surveillance cameras in London on 7/7?

I recall they happened to be er…faulty, on the day in question.

  7. Quonno,

Salmond needlessly called that infamous summit and the outcome of that the even more infamous Act, to even up the score. That was the open intention of the SNP. It was admitted since the existing legislation, which was ignored, couldn’t touch the Celtic support as they did not sing sectarian songs. The new Act covers whatever anyone finds objectionable. An utter nonsense. Why the SNP don’t feel the need to get rid of it worries me about what they really stand for.

How you can even defend Makaskill for what he said, baffles me He didn’t just defend the bigotted singing. He praised it to the skies.

Facial recognition works off 2 images. The first is captured in advance (could be as you go into ground or as part of your season application). The second is taken live (assuming someone thinks you’re misbehaving) and a wee bit of software matches up the 2.

Has anyone mentioned the wee faux pas pre match last night ?

When the Hamilton team selection was put on the big screens – beside the Hamilton name and crest was the partick thistle team and subs from new-year and the stadium announcer read that out

At the time I feared hamilton may be beeling and come out angry – however it seemed to knock them off their strides so well done to the celtic park administration team :)

  13. Bog brother will be watching us our kids and grandkids, my problem being it will be used at their discretion and suit when needed, unlike the hibs/hun game.

More court cases and more of what needs must.

  14. My friends in Celtic,

We as in Celtic Park already have extensive CCTV for monitoring and crime prevention. It’s mentioned in ticket terms and conditions.

Why do we need more ? Or more importantly, why should we pay for more ?

On your way to a game, attending the game then coming back ;how many times do you think you will appear on camera. Especially if you use Trains, city centre streets and pubs / restaurants.

This whole facial recognition scinerio has ulterior motives. Cameras have a place, but let’s be clear ; football fans should not be scapegoats, experimental fodder or treated as the enemy within.

    Hail, Hail.

Ps : to any Shetlander in the Lerwick supporters club. Be wary, be very wary. In the crime ridden schemes of Shetlands there are more cameras , than at the disposal of the entire San Francisco Police Department.

I recently had an Italian contractor on site and as usual I asked him who he supported ?

Turns out he supports juventus and we discussed many issues including them being cheating Bassas.

He asked if I was a season ticket holder and I proudly showed him my card – he confirmed he had his juventus ticket in his wallet and showed it to me . I noticed the picture on his card and he advised me that all season tickets in Italy require a picture on them

You can read my post up. You can read my post down.

Nowhere in it do I defend Salmond, McAskill or the SNP. I simply state, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, they simply act under the circumstances as any politician would have done.

As for those who wax enthusiastically about how, if they were in power, they would repeal the act.

Well very often causes that are popular when in opposition develop aspects of ‘Ah! Well! But you see! when power to do something about them is acquired.

    That’s the weans in.

I have no problem with CTV as it’s become part of daily life but they just seem to be going over the score
