Steps to repair the defence

494

Very pleased we appear to be on the verge of signing a central defender, especially one who at 24 (Erik Sviatchenko), should be very much in his prime. The previous two seasons each brought excellent defensive performance records but things fell apart from the very start of this season – way before Virgil van Dijk left.

The reasons for the are varied. Jason Denayer left to be replaced by Dedryck Boyata. Dedryck is more settled now but he was well short of Jason’s standards early on. Still is. We have also regressed in the full back positions. Emilio Izaguirre’s decline has been gradual but clear. 18-year-old Kieran Tierney makes fewer mistakes and (I think) poses a greater physical challenge.

Then we have Mikael Lustig. Mikael has always been a favourite of mine; as recently as September I regarded him as our best defender, but I think he’s been well off his best for most of the season. He has been regularly caught in the wrong position and his distribution is often a possession-losing lump upfield.

Craig Gordon would be first to admit his form is nowhere near where it was last season, when he almost single-handedly was responsible for us reaching the Europa League knockout stage. The questions for Craig are what’s going wrong and can it be fixed?

Think back to the latter days of Artur Boruc’s time at Celtic. Artur has gone from having Bayern Munich scouts at Celtic Park to watch him to a guy we sold without fuss as a backup for Fiorentina for £1.2m. Whatever it was he had, had gone. I thought he was finished. Six years later he’s at something approaching his best at Bournemouth.

Craig Gordon has the best part of 4 years on Artur. He has time to get back on form.

Well of topic as I don’t want to argue with anyone, I’m looking for advice. It looks like I have a chance of a holiday this summer in the Azores. Doing a bit of online research it looks a really interesting destination. Has anyone on here been there? And if yes, any observations, recommendations, or advice? Thanks in advance for any help.

Celtic delighted to sign Danish internationalist Erik Sviatchenko

By: Paul Cuddihy on 17 Jan, 2016 18:30

CELTIC are delighted to announce that Erik Sviatchenko has joined the club on a four-and-a-half year deal from FC Midtjylland.

The highly-rated Danish internationalist, who had attracted a lot of interest from a number of top clubs, chose the Scottish champions and becomes the latest addition to Ronny Deila’s squad.

Erik has already gained four caps for Denmark and scored one goal against France in October last year.

And the 24-year-old defender also helped FC Midtjylland reach the last 32 of this season’s UEFA Europa League, where they will play Manchester United next month.

But Erik has opted to join Celtic and help the Hoops in their bid for the treble in this campaign.

Speaking exclusively to the official website, Erik said: “I am so happy to join Celtic, such a fantastic club and such a huge name in football. This is a club with a wonderful pedigree and a massive support.

“I will do everything I can to bring success to Celtic. It means so much to me to join a winning club, to join a club that goes for and wins trophies and wants to play in the Champions League.

“I have had a taste of winning with Midtjylland and I want more of this feeling at Celtic. When you play football, you want to be remembered for winning and I want to be remembered as a winner with Celtic.

“I know we have a squad of really talented players and I can’t wait to get started, team up with them and get to work.”

  11. Good to see we are still looking to strengthen the defence, hope the young Danish fella does well.

Really enjoyed the Dundee United game, we played some good stuff, scored some well taken goal and Kris’s was a Kracker…

Think someone is asking our strikers to be more direct and try a few things…

    It works for me.

The highlight of the evening for me though was the Simunovic goal, as I celebrated a chap I was watching the game with said “not now Kato” I thought, what’s he talking aboot!

Had to pop out so just seen your comments re them totally agree and not forgetting to factor they have had the most penalties of any senior team in the uk and no doubt that will continue unabated so long as they are around, which looks like being for the foreseeable future sadly.

  13. Anyone who has doubts about Sevco being I our division next year will now know it will happen.

Hibernian FC was denied the most obvious penalty I have seen for a long time.

They will be in our league,we better be prepared.

  22. I know YouTube is suspect when trying to assess a player but what I have seen of Erick I believe we have landed a good yin, looks very good in the air and doesn’t shirk a challenge, he will be new first goal scorer bet.

  24. Happy to see new centre-back, and it looks like there may be at least one other new signing.

Must ask – who goes out the door?

    Izzy?

    Efe?

    Derk?

    Blackett?

    Scepovic?

    Cifti?

    Forrest?

    O’Connell?

    Stokes, Henderson, Fisher on loan.

With two newcomers we will have around thirty-eight first team contenders – Ronny is on record saying thay he wants to work with a smaller, tighter squad – so in my opinion we should lose eight – who will they be?

Is the mist beginning to clear? – Are we starting to see some established concept? – Is there really a chance that we may not win the title? – Should we be bothered about a treble? – Will we, as a support, continue to tear ourselves apart over the Sevco fiasco?
