2 European Cups and 10 in a row

942

I may have told you this before, apologies if I’m repeating myself.  Around 20 years ago, in a TV studio minutes after a Rangers victory, a former captain, Terry Butcher (what ever happened to him?), told the audience, “David Murray will not stop until he’s won two European Cups and 10 in a row.”

Use of the personal term “he”, not the club name, struck me.  Murray was personally invested in this matter.  Such a burning desire did not make David Murray a bad person, he owned the dominant club in Glasgow, but the team he was dominating had all that glorious history.  If the boot was on the other foot, you’d want the same.  I would.

Perhaps if Jock Stein had stayed at Hibs, Celtic would have stayed in mediocrity, David Murray would have had a more affordable dream and the liquidation of his club would not have been necessary.

You know it’s true…….

On Tuesday’s STV report that Hearts manager, John McGlynn, said:

“How many fans would think they could win the league if Celtic weren’t in it at this stage? All [clubs’] fans would.

“That would cause great excitement and I think it would bring fans back to the game, at the lower clubs.

“If you look at the rest of us outside Rangers and Celtic, we’d all fill our stadiums if we thought we’d realistically have a chance of winning the league.”

There are screeds written and spoken about our game but the McGlynn Plan is the most productive comment I’ve read all year.  Well done to STV for the report, hopefully they will put the same questions to others in the league. This is the most important question for Scottish football right now.

It’s time for these clubs to throw off their downtrodden ways and genuinely compete for the Scottish title.

Still looking for a ticket for Celtic v Barcelona?   Equally keen to acquire a Wee Oscar wristband?  A CQN’er has very generously offered his ticket for next week to raise funds for the Wee Oscar Campaign.  You can bid for the ticket/wristband package on ebay.

Tell everyone who asks you for a ticket to bid on the auction.

CG is quoted in the Scottish Sun artical headed ….I WANT WALTER .

by David Friel on 30th Oct 2012 .

He is quoted saying that the club should get £271,000 from the sfa as they have settled ALL their European debts .

If these debts have been paid from the 2.9m prize money for 2nd place last season .How does that sit with CWs statement that Regan /Doomcaster knew as of Oct 2011 that ragers had run out of money and were effectively running whilst insolvent .

  3. Many thanks for the Juventus video on the 4.00am update. Nice to see one of footballs greats give us a wee bit of credit.

  5. Rangers in fresh trouble as club’s key shareholder faces tax inquiry

Criminal investigations have been launched into tax schemes sold by a key shareholder in Rangers Football Club, The Times has learnt.

Richard Hughes, the co-founder of Zeus Capital, the finance company at the centre of the Rangers takeover, also set up Zeus Partners, which created and marketed a £134 million film investment scheme that HM Revenue & Customs suspects may be part of an illegal effort to generate millions of pounds in tax relief.

The Revenue is understood to be investigating 17 companies set up by Zues Partners. Criminal investigations……….

Can’t get the rest but below is borrowed from Scottishlawthoughts:

Criminal investigations have been launched into tax schemes sold by a key shareholder in Rangers.

This relates to Richard Hughes, founder of Zeus Capital and the associated Zeus Partners. Mr Hughes is personally a holder of over 2 million shares, according to the paper.

Zeus Partners created and marketed a £134 million film investment scheme, suspected by HMRC of what is described as “an illegal attempt to generate millions of pounds of tax relief”. HMRC are investigating 17 companies set up in connection with the scheme. It is alleged that the companies were set up, and films produced, to generate losses, and the structure of the deals was such that, for a comparatively small investment, tax losses many times higher would be created, saving wealthy investors large sums by way of tax.

The Times makes it clear that Zeus Capital itself is not under investigation. However, and perhaps of more relevant concern to prospective investors, is the statement by the paper that Mr Hughes “stands to make millions from the share floatation” due by the end of the year. It is hard to see how he does so with all of the investment raised in the share issue staying in the club, as promised by Mr Green.

A Rangers spokesman is quoted as saying that Rangers “have no business relationship with Zeus Capital”. However Imran Ahmad was a Director of Zeus Capital and is attributed by Mr Green with introducing him to the deal, and Brian Stockbridge, the Finance Director, is a Director too of Zeus Capital.

  6. Morning,

They really are the gift that keeps on giving…

Charles Green is the subject a new tax inquiry- separate from the Zeus investigation.

I admire your confidence but the Europa League is not assured let alone Champions League Group Stages. We are unlikely to gain any points from Barca and they are likely to have qualified by the time they play the other two teams. Points, therefore, will be more easily won. I can`t see us gaining anything in Benfica. So, Spartak at home remains out big game.

Off out now for the first of two rounds of golf. The second against A Ceiler Gonof Rust.

  23. What part of “all money due to Rangers (in Liquidation)” has to be paid to that clubs creditors does Green not understand?

  24. The Battered Bunnet on

No wonder Charles Green needs the Legned on board.

With major shareholders Zeus being investigated for marketing a tax scam, and Chuckles apparently in some trouble with HMRC on his own account, the Legned’s experience of managing a business through the challenges of a tax enquiry or two would add some terrific value to the struggling 3rd division club.
