2020 will be the year of the trader

421

It will not have escaped your attention that Scott Bain is the only senior goalkeeper under contract at Celtic.  Fraser Forster is floating around while we wait and see if we can afford to meet Southampton’s terms (assume nothing here), while Craig Gordon rejected a “vastly reduced” offer to stay.

I know how important Fraser was last season, so if at all possible, I would have him back, but as a general position, I would be reluctant to pay comparable rates to anyone not in the ‘absolutely critical’ category.  Football clubs everywhere cannot afford the contracts they paid last year.  Like Celtic, many have to pay expensive long-term deals, but there can scarcely be a club in the world that would not be happy to offload players to generate enough cash to keep them in grass seed.

With so much trauma in the market, the clubs who shed expensive contracts and take advantage of newfound value from places they could not afford to buy from a year ago, will make the biggest gains this year.

The challenge for Celtic is to find a keeper who can mount a genuine challenge as first choice on the “vastly reduced” offer we made to Craig.  The same is true for other positions we are looking to fill.  Having missed Champions League football for two seasons, we have to be frank and admit that despite closing in on a fourth consecutive treble and nine-in-a-row, there are better players across Europe than some in our squad.  2020 will be the year of the trader, let’s roll the dice!

I’m not against reconstruction on principle, but like everyone else in the country, the first thing I think of is, “What’s in it for my club?”  A 14 team top flight has two fewer games against bottom 6 (or 8) clubs.  These games do nothing for Celtic beyond cluttering up our calendar, so I’m happy with that.

Since Hearts have moved on from both the football-competency and arrogant-belligerence approaches to avoiding relegation, their latest proposal, for a 14-10-10-10 setup hit the “What’s in it for me?” question.  For most clubs the answer is nothing, beyond putting your name to a motion that helps a club that participated in an outrageous charade against the league in recent months.  Aesop could have told the tale of Hearts actions this year.

  1. Why did we need to end our SPFL season early? We could have been back playing the completion of the league fixtures starting Wednesday.

Rangers would be bust of course because they would have to have extended contracts of players they have now let go. And would have had to pay them.

Cost of testing? There’s a man just chucked in £2M to support Scottish fitba. Could have been put towards that cost.

A quick look at ‘Newsnow Celtic’ this morning confirms that they have put Kris Boyd in charge of selecting the headlines. Prompt log-out.

  3. On post above ..if John Barnes had anything to do with above transfer he’d be better keeping schtum.

  4. So back training and gone, I’m assuming are:

Gordon, Forster, Bauer, Jozo, Arzani, Hayes, Moi, Kouassi, Miller (9)

    Shoogly peg:

Ralston, Hendry, Bayo, Connell, Shved, Benyu. (6)

    Promotions:

    Welsh, Dembele & Okoflex (3)

    Purchases:

Forster, Moi, Centre Half and LW (4)

Not possible because the govt isn’t allowing football until Aug 1 at the earliest.

To then play out the current season would cause real problems with the new Sky contract and possible substantial financial penalties.

Also the final SPFL payments would be held up until the league was completed which is why 81% voted to terminate the season now and receive the funds needed to keep head above water.

The Thompson money is a grant of £50k. Celtic have already bought a Covid-19 kit but other clubs in lower leagues don’t even know if or when they will play again and need money to keep the facilities open (not to play players wages).

  6. Bada Bing …………Have to admit to being surprised when i heard Duffer was leaving. Why would he leave a top class , well run, successful football club on the verge of history making next season to return to an organisation not in the best of health currently. It was as I suspected for family reasons as he has just stated and quite understandable. Damian I presume was an attack minded coach witjh vast experience at the highest level and would hope Celtic would go for similar with the new appointment. best of luck to Damian.

  7. An attack minded coach with experience of the Scottish game. Technically sound and has a passion for the rules of the game. I give you

    Excellent analysis

Of course as usual there will be offers for the players who we want to keep and lack of offers for those we want to move on. Reports suggest Eduoard. N’tcham and Ajer are in demand.

The shoogly peg group has players under contract who are unlikely to get a better deal elsewhere.

O’ Connor has got a full cap for Ireland and wants games. He is maybe worth a try as 3/4 choice Centre half

Robertson could maybe also promoted. Afolabi and Aitkinson have been on loan but still need games,

We really have too many players

Thanks for that . I’ll give it a try . Unfortunately the ‘hide publication’ feature on Newsnow is only temporary so the same rubbish like HITC keeps coming up.

The Celticnewsnow.com site links into other Celtic site unlike the NewsNow version which is as you say click bait

    Holy sweet hun

I’m just in from a BLM protest in Richmond North Yorks – the kids went in, I stayed there too. I have never seen so many huns face to face as those in the counter protest.

You lot see them regularly- it was that bad that one of the ex soldiers, who was a part of the counter protest on a war memorial, came up to a black guy I was talking to and apologised – he said ‘ I ‘m sorry, I’m not part of them, I just came to protect the monument, I don’t agree with what they are saying’

    No there’s a real hero!

Scum almighty – I can’t repeat what they were chanting.

Biggest take away from the day – ex soldiers are really damaged and we need to look after them better.

Just had a quick look in and you’re right . Celtic newsnow is very refreshing . All articles about Celtic rather than what Rangers* are going to do to stop the ten or which signing Stevie G is going to beat us to .

Finished with Newsnow . If I wanted to wade through shite I’d climb down a sewer.

Ross has been in touch. Thank you very much for facilitating that. I will be responding to him today. We are still in lockdown here, as unfortunately I am located in the hotspot for the State. I am curious as to how Celtic TV will deal with U.S. Supporter’s Clubs. Not every pub is willing to open between 4:00 and 7:00 A.M. to accommodate Celtic fans, and there is a substantial possibility that many of these venues will be out of business.

  16. I take it that going to a 14 team top division would mean 2 additional home games. Apart from the issue of virtual ticket this is another question over ST renewals.

  17. Ex Soldiers are dangerous. They have been taught to obey orders without thought and have been trained to Kill people. All soldiers including medics are fully trained in combat.

When they come out they are left with little support and they flounder. Some of them were violent people when they went in and most are violent when they come out. Lots of he Homeless are ex-servicemen who cannot fit in as their skillset is not suitable.

They invariably are Right wing in attitude.

  18. They should stop all the ‘forces dsy pish, pay their dues and move on. BTW How are the zebt boys doin ?. Howmany bankrupt with all assets transferreed to wife ?

  19. Forces Day was introduced by Gordon Brown trying to appeal to the English voters, as well as choosing a goal by England against Scotland as his favourite and saying that he was from north Britain (North Queensferry to be exact!)

  20. lets all do the huddle on

    they dont do weekends anymore

so they can go do nazi salutes at statues they are protecting!!

  21. highlight of the lockdown for me, out a wee drive for supplies where I live, and I seen Julien and his missus out walking, i was going to give him a hail hail, but I got tongue tied, no like me at awe.

  22. Anyone read John Barnes in the Mail on Sunday?

Never had the dressing room from day one, board never backed him from day one, Petta and Petrov (his signings) booed when on the ball by Celtic supporters. Too many influential players at the club blah blah.

The truth is Barnes could not man manage and was a poor manager, football and man.

Oh and he says the reason he was fired was nothing to do with racism.

No John it was because, as a manager, you were a complete tit.

thats a fine highlight of lockdown

not sure what mine would be.

    nothng as goid as that!

but a better question for everyone

what has been everyones worst thing about lockdown

and not obvious stuff like no celtic, no pubs etc

mine is a toss up between

1- the proliferation of cyclists – i stopped playing with toys when i was in my teens, but now there are all these angry folk wearing very suspicious lycra cycling on the roads. nitemare. cyclists are a vwry angry bunch.

2 – because so many folk are stuck at home, they keep going on about their children. so fkin bored listening to it. “ive got a 2 year old and a 6 year old running about so im struggling to get any work done”. ” well i have 2 teenagers who wont go to sleep til 3am and then dont get up til midday”.

fk me man, give it up. u think ur children are the best children ever born. so does every parent. but dont bore the rest of us with ur pish

    rant over

  24. Saint stivs

Maybe we should market a che Guevara bunnet with the 🌟.

Not sure I’d be laughing yet they’ve been well ahead in the lockdown league

  25. Philboy,

I heard him on the radio yesterday. I like him. I think he has an interesting take on racism – and as he has (I’d imagine) faced it his whole life he’s worth listening to.

Re Celtic – he says he has no issues with the fans, that we backed him for the most part and he says he admires our love for the club.

His issue, as you state, was with the board.

He claims that the board – at an agm? – were aware of fans anger/frustration at us signing an untried manager. They tried to re-assure us by saying that if it doesn’t work out Kenny D (not G) was there to step in.

Now, I can’t confirm the events happening but if I was managing anywhere, football team or other, I wouldn’t be happy if I was undermined like that.

He also said that the board were trying to get him a house for 3 months and then stopped talking about it. He then knew it was only a matter of time…

Re Petrov – I think there was a bit of disquiet for Petrov (was he not playing right back when he started playing with us?).

And as for Petta – the jury is still out :) Though for playing the 6-2 game alone I’ll give him pass marks.

  26. MAJESTIC HARTSON

The article in the Mail said what you said.

Except he couldn’t handle the strong personalities in the dressing room and therefore had lost it almost immediately.

A strong football manager can manage men.

    Barnes couldn’t.

Why would the board employ a manager they didn’t fancy?

From day one, whether Dalglish was there or not? I don’t get that.

Re the house purchase…………you can take a horse to water.

We were well rid of him in my opinion.

As his managerial career thereafter confirmed. He was a dud.
