Spectre of Celtic and wincing at financial realities

1141

I winced slightly reading that Deliotte’s suggested Celtic were a ‘top 40’ club in terms of turnover.  The days we featured in their annual Top 20 report are long gone, lost in the raft of TV deals which flooded into England, France and elsewhere.

This is a problem for Celtic but at least we have a decent shot at Champions League income each year.  Others in Scottish football have been left to wither on the vine (phrase of the week), as the likes of AFC Bournemouth cherry-pick their talent.

Celtic need a solution to help them compete with their peer-group of European heavy-weights but the solution has to accommodate the other top Premiership clubs.  Dundee United have the ability to produce remarkable talent, if only they had the TV deal to allow them to retain it long enough to build a team.  The same could be said for Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen, Motherwell, Inverness and Ross County.

Scottish football would benefit enormously by federating with a neighbour.

You would think after administration and liquidation those who look to Ibrox for their football fix would, to adopt a popular phrase around those parts, have suffered enough from financial ‘ambition’.  Not a bit of it, it seems.  Not when the spectre of “being battered” by Celtic looms like an enormous green and white tidal wave.

For the last 12 years of its existence, Dave King was one of the non-executive directors of Rangers, paid to ensure that financial controls and risk management [role of non-execs defined by government 2003 Higgs Report]were in place.  I am not being glib or shameless when I say he did a remarkable job.

With Newco appearing to be in some financial distress, King told the Daily Mail he opposes planned cutbacks: ‘If we cut the club back to a level that’s just enough to win the League One or the Championship then that’s fine. But the gap between ourselves and Celtic when we get to the Premiership will be obvious.

“But I don’t feel the club should respond by cutting the costs to the point of saying ‘we only have to do what is necessary to beat East Fife or whoever.

“Because if you do that Celtic will build up to 10-in-a-row and we could be so far behind them that even when we are back in the Premiership we are  not in a position to catch up.

“We cannot risk going to Celtic Park and being battered 6-0.”

Those trying to keep Newco Rangers afloat will not welcome suggestions that current shareholders don’t have the “appetite or willingness to invest”, a few months before they will ask fans to buy season tickets.

Learn your lesson, there is no shame in losing 6-0 to Celtic, this is sport, bad results can happen, but there is enormous shame in failing to live within your means.

I’m off to contemplate 10-in-a-row for a while. To hyphenate or not?

  5. Kit @ 1245,

I think we both know (and everyone on here and beyond too) that “…all things being remembered and considered and taken into account…” you simply cannot compare a cup-tie versus Morton as to one versus whatever version of the Huns takes the field against us!

For one, there would be a full house at Celtic Park (or Ipox for that matter), and like it or not, despite protestations to the contrary, I believe the great majority of the Celtic Support on that night/day, would be well up for it, more so than any other game – I know I would be! – and I have no doubts whatsoever that the players, management and Club as a whole would be as driven, to bury that mob on the pitch, as we would be in the Stands.

Yes, I know I am saying that the attitude would be different than against Morton, and as professionals the players should not be like that, but we all know that it happens. And it would. Of that I have no doubts.

Sure they would be up for it too. But our players are of have better standard than theirs and we would be up for it every bit as much as them. In which case the class would tell.

We would win. Maybe not 6-0, but we would win.

Lol I am with you! Walfrid would absolutely go berserk at the very idea of anyone in a football team he founded being paid anything like £1m — whether it be a player, a manager, an executive or whoever.

Hahaha…..at least you’ll do a PERFECT job on the CQN mag.

  12. SydneyTim, return on striker investment is considerably less than return on keeper, defender or midfielder investment, all of which have been excellent. Strikers command highest price and have the most transparent stats (goals/game), so finding value is much harder, so we shouldn’t be surprised it’s more difficult than others.

Finding value with strikers is the challenge. I suspect less short-term buying, more investment in long-term scouting is the best way forward.

    Token Tim, thank-you.

Rubicon, I’ll not worry if we never meet Newco but a few 4-0 or 6-0 results would be agreeable.

BigChipsUK, I think the current deal will deliver circa £1.5m – if we win the league!

Spot on once again, Paul. Nobody associated with the Rangers group of clubs (or in the MSM) seems to get that they haven’t won a championship while living within their means since 1978. All the success they had was with debt. Do they REALLY want to go down that road again…..?

  21. “Scottish football would benefit enormously by federating with a neighbour.”

One of the stumbling blocks and fears the SFA have is that if Celtic(or others) play in England then there would be calls for a British FIFA team, to replace the separate home countries national teams.

However that becomes obsolete when Scotland votes Yes in 2014 – There will be no Britain containing Scotland and no logic to a British national team. The national teams remain separate and the club federations can get on with it.

Everyone’s a winner – except we’d only be on 7 or 8 in a row, by then. so maybe we can wait

Quite ironic really. It was chasing their 10-in-a-row that put them on the road to death. Now they want their successor club to do everything they can to stop us winning 10. You’d think they might have learned somrthing along the way.

  25. @Paul

“Celtic need a solution to help them compete with their peer-group of European heavy-weights but the solution has to accommodate the other top Premiership clubs.”

I’ve said for a few years that to facilitate such a move Celtic, as a corporate structure as we now know the club is thanks to the SFA, would split in two.

The first club would remain in Scotland, in the SPFL, playing our younger players and giving them valuable experience leaving this club to fluctuate up and down the leagues. More importantly the cost of watching this team would be about £5 – £10 in the Scottish league structure.

The second club would go to what ever league they are invited to whether that is a Northern European league, a European league, or England and the cost of watching these games would be similar as now.

An agreement would have to be signed stating that players can only transfer between the two clubs during the normal transfer windows.

For ourselves there is the bonus of our younger players gaining experience playing in the SPFL and not being continually farmed out. Younger fans would be able to go and see the youth team, gain an affinity for the club, and when they are older move up to the big team. The second club would have bigger crowds possibly even returning to selling out our stadium.

The SPFL would retain a ‘Celtic’ which would still have a large travelling support turning up at away stadia and assisting the finances of other clubs in whatever league they play.

    Winners all round!

The greatest thing however is that we can retain the history with both clubs and be the most successful club in the world (tee hee).

Seriously, I think this is an option which would benefit us and also the SPFL.

  26. And Further and for the record, I’m an Irish Citizen (by passport and often I have been grateful) but I wish the Green Brigade would ditch the rebel songs inside the walls of Celtic Park. And more so a ‘grateful’ Irish Citizen I am a Scotsman as proud as you can ever paint the boast, like the vast majority of the Celtic Support are (whether male or female) and I love being Scottish but sometimes I fell others are intimidated to be who they are.

  27. Snake Plissken on

I’m not a football manager, I don’t see players in training every day but I have to say I am beyond disappointed to see yet another young Celtic player punted out on loan to clubs in lower league English clubs.

We have the opportunity to play these players in OUR team and develop them because we have no effective league opposition.

Tony Watt and Atajic have shown in reserve football and in the first team that they are capable and more than capable than some senior players. Many moons ago when Alliadiere came from Arsenal to Celtic Craig Beattie VERY quickly showed he was more of a threat, Beattie and Maloney came in and played and Alliadiere went back to London and then on to obscurity.

Gordon Strachan was asked why did you send him back and Strachan replied ‘When I was at Manchester United we signed Alan Brazil and then a young boy called Mark Hughes came into the team. That’s life.’

I feel we are not properly using our youth development to its fullest.

We look at Ajax and other clubs who bring through their own and sign players but when you put money into developing these young guys and then let them go the Alliadiere route I doubt very much that we are operating properly as a football club in that manner.

We are top dog in Scotland and at least two youth team players should be in the team EVERY week from now on given our position and strength.

Atajic should have stayed and played. We are not falling over ourselves with strikers who score goals. ONe is in Belgium, one is now going to Shrewsbury.

Balde and Pukki may come good but the signs are not good and the less said about Bangura the better.

Are Watt and Atajic and now Fridjonsson worse than those three?

How can you develop a team and an understanding by sending out players on loan who are hungry and could lift the season?

If loans improve the players and they come into the first team then that is brilliant but our track record there is not great. Liam Miller was the last one to do it and we saw where he ran away to when he got the chance.

Maybe if it was a defensive midfielder among our abundance the Neil Lennon would have kept him.

Two years minus a genuine rival and we’ve brought through a distinct lack of players who play regularly with the exception of Forrest who is Lennon’s boy and Fisher because there are two right backs injured.

I think there will be others who share my frustration.

Laughing at the circus/freakshow in Govan is all very well and indeed very enjoyable BUT I’d rather be seeing Celtic youth team players stepping up and then no one would be talking about Alfred Finboggasson, Lee Griffiths or anyone else as a striker or an attacking midfielder.
