3m rule for Celtic only. Farrygate but from the Government this time

433

Coverage of Neil Lennon’s press conference was curated to show the manager angry and apparently confused about the health of his squad.  The reason for his anger was omitted from the snippets available online yesterday afternoon, then mocked by those who should know better.

Neil clearly explained what upset him (full transcript from GlasgowLive).  The country is following medical advice to maintain a 2m social distance.  Football has followed this rule and it was the determining factor in isolating Ryan Christie and Kieran Tierney when they were within 2m of infected Stuart Armstrong with Scotland in October.  Only Christie and Tierney had to isolate as the rest of the squad were not within 2m of Armstrong for any period of time.

Clubs across the UK have made travel arrangements accordingly, keeping a 2m distance between players where possible, or accepting the risk if packing them in any tighter.  The 2m rule has been absolute and continues to feature in public health adverts.

What happened politically after Celtic left for Dubai is why you saw an angry Celtic manager yesterday.

On 5 January, Nicola Sturgeon used her daily PR conference to reference photographs of Celtic players in Dubai poolside, and while admitting she had no actual information to backup what she was saying, questioned if Celtic were following her rules.  Celtic were following the rules, but that is irrelevant to the Show Trial the First Minister launched.

As Neil Lennon explained, the Scottish Government turned on Celtic, creating a brand new 3m rule for them, while every other club in Scotland with a positive case has been asked to observe a 2m rule.

This is the reason our number of excluded players was as high for the Hibs and Livi games.  It is the reason we were subsequently forced to keep players 3m apart when travelling, or 3 players to a 52 seater bus.  The rule change was not announced by the First Minister at her PR conferences and has not been forced on any other club, it was delivered below the radar on a vulnerable club with a baying mob (including former players who care nothing for us) ready to lap it up.

Despite the acres of gorging media coverage, no one has solicited a comment on Neil’s claim from the Scottish Government.  The Celtic manager appears in front of the country’s media to explain how the Government apply one rule to Celtic and another to the rest of the country, and the headlines are all about his anger!  Do you want Tony ‘Take it on the chin’ instead?

The First Minister is on the hook for this.  She promised action on Celtic despite knowing they followed her rules, and she followed through with this 3m punishment. It keeps eyes away from her day job.  But Neil did the inverted commas sign and he’s having a nightmare season, so some would rather mock, speculate about his mental health or drinking habits.  I hope it’s worth the clicks.

Maybe my views were forged when the SFA’s Jim Farry had one rule for Celtic and another for everyone else, but I think the only acceptable reaction to this from a Celtic manager or supporter is seething anger.  This is no different in execution or consequence.

Neil Lennon started the rammy yesterday and claimed Celtic have information to support their claim they’re being treated differently.

Why on earth would the First Minister get involved?

The onus is now on Celtic either to produce the evidence, which I doubt they have, and even if they do, the inclination to expose it.

To be blunt Celtic need to put up or STFU.

  2. RTB – Are people/ fans who pay out hard earned cash for season tickets, merchandise/strips etc not allowed an opinion.

As long as it’s not derogatory in any way I do not see any harm in someone wanting what is best for our club.

Oh and believe me it’s not just Neil that should be sacked like the Kelly’s and Whites before them our board to a man and woman need sacked immediately.

But get a manager in now that is most fans priority.

Only My opinion and yours will probably differ, but that’s fine as long as we respect each others right to have that opinion.

I think you will find most “rangers” fans want Neil to stay as coach.

No disrespect Tim but who cares what they want, I know a few and they are all delighted to see Celtic fans turning on him, delighted.

  4. And for the Record I think Neil is correct about smaller clubs and social distancing.

But the Board should have brought this up, sorry CEO not our manager.

Neil should be providing answers about our shambolic form and giving us the lowdown on the up coming game.

These people sticking up for Neil should think what they are doing to Neil and our club.

They should join up with Sevco fans in wanting all the I’ll will, bad press and continued crap on the field of play and off it.

what they are doing to Neil = sticking up for Neil . No ? or are we just enablers ?

How do you call out hypocrisy and double standards without referring to other instances (‘whataboutery’)?

Whataboutery is never about justice Ernie. You’re a smart guy, and I think you know this already. Whataboutery isn’t done from a position of being in the right. It’s always done when you’re caught bang to rights and try to justify your own wrongdoings by contrasting them against someone else’s.

For example – Rangers fans singing The Billy Boys – “But what about the songs Celtic sing?”

Or, Rangers on Morelos being sent of for some act of lunacy – “But what about that tackle by Davie Hay in 1976 on John Grieg”?

If, for example, Celtic had insisted on playing Jorge Cadette when they new Farry had stitched us up we’d have failed in ridding ourselves of the cancer that Farry was on the game. Instead, Fergus played is smart. We were untouchable. Our conduct being absolutely beyond question hi lighted the issue and left Farry without a leg to stand on.

On breaking the rules, whataboutery is a doomed strategy. At least Peter Lawwell *tried* to apologise and move on. From there if it later transpired there’s been double standards we can raise concerns.

To put this at its most obviously basic – How do you think Fred West’s trial would have gone if he’d said “But what about Harold Shipman and Charlie Manson?”. It’s a non defense and seeks simply to obfuscate. Worse, 9 times out of 10 it fails. The huns trying it over and over to our hilarity should have illustrated that better than I ever could.

  13. This says it for me:

Hoops boss Lennon said: “Should the first Old Firm game be pushed back? I think that’s what everyone would want.

“Everyone associated with the game would want that and the clubs would want that.

“I’m sure it would suit the TV companies as well.”

Neil Lennon loves the Old Firm, as does his bosses. It defined him and them and keeps the money rolling in for them. He’ll be getting wheeled out to promote it on Sky next year when he’s working there.

“Neil Lennon loves the Old Firm,”

Too much. In real life not make believe internet stuff he’s been through more than anyone should ever have to put up with because of the Huns. Serious, life and death stuff.

He’s done crap job as our manager this season and he deserves criticism for it but not stuff like this. I would imagine it would be extremely hurtful if it was suggested to him

  19. I believe the accusations made today in P67’s article have an air of truth about them.

Immediately after Dubai, I could not understand how our protocols seen us lose all our strikers and up to 13 players in total.

Either the protocols were ignored on the trip or something else was at play.

We’re now told bespoke rules were enforced on us.

I’m afraid this really isn’t good enough from our board. I’m a shareholder and a season ticket holder like many on this forum.

We deserve openness from our Club. Peter Lawwell should have addressed this last week in his video release and taken the time to explain to us how we lost half our squad.

Again the Celtic hierarchy seem to be taking an omerta code of silence while the club comes under attack.

    Not good enough, Celtic.

    * In 2003, two men assaulted him. Lennon’s partner was passenger in his car.

    * In 2008, assaulted and knocked unconscious by two later prosecuted Rangers fans

Why don’t you offer your forensic skills at textual analysis to Not-Jacinda?

    Who’s “Not-Jacinda”? Apologies, I don’t speak mysogynist.

When you can raise your points beyond drivel that would have my 4 year old cringing in embarrassment we can maybe have a sensible conversation. Language is developed to assist with communication. You spend your time on CQN trying to subvert that. In all honesty? It just make it easier to ignore your illogical trash.

From what I hear there is good money on offer to keep her mob out of prison.

Obviously you have’t been paying attention – that said, I’ve been on here since you started posting and that’s something you’ve been consistent with. From Lawwell being a ‘debt junkie’ will now, you’ve peddled rumour an innuendo and little else. Have at it.

However – I’ll repeat again. And now, frankly, it’s getting boring, I AM NOT AN SNP MEMBER OR VOTER. Is that clear enough for you to comprehend? I’m an SSP and sometime communist party voter. Always have been, likely always will be.

Failing that why don’t you go out and play tig with the buses.

An ad hominem insult! How unlike you!

As a general rule, try treating people with respect and you’ll get some back. A useful rule of thumb is this – when posting, ask yourself, “If I said this to someone in Bairds Bar, would it get me a punch in the mouth?” If you find the answer is anything other than “Of course not!”, try again, and try harder.

You appear to have a visceral hatred for fellow Celtic fans.

NL is an ordinary guy with an extra-ordinary job with no support from the exec level.

I agree. Except I think Neil Lennon is an extraordinary guy. I think the stuff he’s been expected to put up with is shameful. Viable explosive devices send to the home of a footballer. Moved several times in the deda of night because of credible threats, only to pull the jersey on and play out of his skin hours later. He’s an exceptional human. That doesn’t make him infallible. or does it justify his latest behaviour. It just doesn’t. It needs called out.

For the record – I was absolutely one of the people clamouring for Neil to be given the job. I thought he was better at putting a team out than Rodgers (despite not being as good a coach IMO), I was 100% a ‘Give it to Neil’ – and at that juncture I don’t think there was a better candidate. However, nothing lasts forever, and ultimately my admiration of Lennon is framed by his exploits for Celtic. I’m a *celtic* fan, not a Neil Lennon fan, not a Billy McNeill fan, not a Tommy Burns fan, not a Henke fan, a Celtic fan. And my love of all of these people is based around Celtic. Billy McNeill got the sack from Celtic. And it was a tragedy, but his time was up. Just as Neils is. We should be moving to try and let the man keep his dignity, not flail around looking for reasons it’s all going wrong. The reasons should be looked it so we don’t repeat the mistakes, but they’re already made and his time is up.

Yesterday was embarrassing and Lennon should *never* have been put in that situation. It invited people to laugh at him, and that’s wrong. The club had a narrative, and they should have stuck to it. If Neil disagreed? He shouldn’t have bene hung out to dry like yesterday. He’s left flapping in the wind whilst the club stay silent. It’s wrong. And you making these duff arguments doesn’t help him.

He called out the stinking hypocrisy at the heart of the matter.

No he really didn’t. He made a bunch of unsubstantiated accusations, the repercussions of which will reverberate around our club for some time.

The Nats are using our trip to Dubai as a huge squirrel to take the focus off their own failings.

I don’t care! I’m really struggling here not to swear, but I don’t care what the SNP are doing. I care about the things we’re in control of. One of which is sticking by the rules. We started this whole covid thing helping other clubs, now we’re pointing fingers. We seemingly didn’t have any issue with any facilities before Dubai, but now we’ve been caught? They’re terrible! Awful! It’s nonsense. And beneath that bluster and insult, you know it only too well.

We made the wrong call and have apologised for it.

And then violently un-apologised and blamed everyone but us. Despite John Kennedy saying we broke rules. So, did we or didn’t we? Lenny also sounded like your red faced Covid denying uncle when he conflated being asymptomatic with being not being infectious. It was a *massive* own goal. And likening this to the Farry situation is laughable. We were untouchable in the case of Farry – we played a blinder because we were in the right. We had no flys on us. This time? We’re mired in hypocrisy, science denying and avoidable catastrophe.

The Nats and Not-Jacinda have made a number of wrong calls costing many lives regarding their handling of the CoViD19 pandemic — maybe you should ask them to apologise.

Or maybe BECAUSE I’M NOT AN SNP SUPPORTER I’LL COMMENT ON CELTIC!!!

I realise your entire play here is to cast this as “SNP supporter against Celtic”, but like your other accusations, when you look just beneath the surface your points are pretty much groundless – your use of initialisations etc are designed to distract from that.

The SNP can be held to account at the ballot box – how are our holy trinity of Desmond, Lawwell and Lennon held to account? It appears they’re not accountable to us.

In summary – I’M NOT AN SNP SUPPORTER! NOT. AN. SNP. SUPPORTER. is that clear enough or NASNPS be better for you to wrap your warped logic around?

Next time you retort with an insult like ‘play tag with busses’ you’ll find your comment ignored.
