3m rule for Celtic only. Farrygate but from the Government this time

433

Coverage of Neil Lennon’s press conference was curated to show the manager angry and apparently confused about the health of his squad.  The reason for his anger was omitted from the snippets available online yesterday afternoon, then mocked by those who should know better.

Neil clearly explained what upset him (full transcript from GlasgowLive).  The country is following medical advice to maintain a 2m social distance.  Football has followed this rule and it was the determining factor in isolating Ryan Christie and Kieran Tierney when they were within 2m of infected Stuart Armstrong with Scotland in October.  Only Christie and Tierney had to isolate as the rest of the squad were not within 2m of Armstrong for any period of time.

Clubs across the UK have made travel arrangements accordingly, keeping a 2m distance between players where possible, or accepting the risk if packing them in any tighter.  The 2m rule has been absolute and continues to feature in public health adverts.

What happened politically after Celtic left for Dubai is why you saw an angry Celtic manager yesterday.

On 5 January, Nicola Sturgeon used her daily PR conference to reference photographs of Celtic players in Dubai poolside, and while admitting she had no actual information to backup what she was saying, questioned if Celtic were following her rules.  Celtic were following the rules, but that is irrelevant to the Show Trial the First Minister launched.

As Neil Lennon explained, the Scottish Government turned on Celtic, creating a brand new 3m rule for them, while every other club in Scotland with a positive case has been asked to observe a 2m rule.

This is the reason our number of excluded players was as high for the Hibs and Livi games.  It is the reason we were subsequently forced to keep players 3m apart when travelling, or 3 players to a 52 seater bus.  The rule change was not announced by the First Minister at her PR conferences and has not been forced on any other club, it was delivered below the radar on a vulnerable club with a baying mob (including former players who care nothing for us) ready to lap it up.

Despite the acres of gorging media coverage, no one has solicited a comment on Neil’s claim from the Scottish Government.  The Celtic manager appears in front of the country’s media to explain how the Government apply one rule to Celtic and another to the rest of the country, and the headlines are all about his anger!  Do you want Tony ‘Take it on the chin’ instead?

The First Minister is on the hook for this.  She promised action on Celtic despite knowing they followed her rules, and she followed through with this 3m punishment. It keeps eyes away from her day job.  But Neil did the inverted commas sign and he’s having a nightmare season, so some would rather mock, speculate about his mental health or drinking habits.  I hope it’s worth the clicks.

Maybe my views were forged when the SFA’s Jim Farry had one rule for Celtic and another for everyone else, but I think the only acceptable reaction to this from a Celtic manager or supporter is seething anger.  This is no different in execution or consequence.

It is possible to be infected more than once but second time symptoms either won’t develop or don’t be as severe or long lasting.

I’m very glad you posted that list – it outlines the extraordinary pressure Lennon has bene under for years. And also shows why up till now he’s been a credit to the club in the face of unbelievable aggression and bigotry.

I’d hope it’s been a learning experience for our country – but considering how few journalists and news media called out his treatment, I’d doubt it.

That said, it shouldn’t stop us commenting on when he gets something, or many things, dreadfully wrong. His experiences make him admirable, not infallible.

It’s a shame – and it’s hard to pinpoint why it hasn’t worked. I do think that managers have three eras – The up and coming, the peak and the downslide. Managers on the downslide rarely recapture what makes them special, and maybe Neil has grown tired of firefighting in all manner of directions. Maybe he’s stopped learning. Who knows – it *is* important to acknowledge that it’s not working – but that shouldn’t poison his history, or even all of his current tenure. Few managers avoid the sack at clubs so it’s just reflecting the reality that visits all managers eventually.

I could just as well post his footballing highlights, fat lot of good it does for the people that were hell bent on saying he was the wrong appointment from the start,

It’s a shame. Like I say, I was 100% in the ‘It must be Lenny’ camp. I guess though that’s caveated by ‘and must chose his own appointments’ etc – although acting on those rumours as reality is also dangerously misleading. When Rodgers left, Lenny stepped in and was a safe hand on the tiller. If anything this year has been cautionary tale about arrogance and entitlement.

I can’t lie and say that bit of me is relieved – I had ongoing concerns about how the huns would react, especially as the pressure and atmosphere up till now has been poisonous. The entitlement of some Celtic fans too has led me to think it might just not be worth it. A reset and restart might be better all round. Regardless of ‘the 10’ I’ll still wake up as mad a Celtic fan as I was before, so if it leeches the boil maybe some good can come of it, despite the disappointment. That’s twice now in my life we’ve been also men and failed at making history (the UEFA cup run and being at the final being the first)… but the sun rose and I still love Celtic. Celtic have still made me happy, so the 10 makes no real odds.

Lenny’s achievements are incredible. I hope a large section of our fan base remembers that – in 5 years he’ll be a stick on as a legend. When we tell our kids about Lenny? It’s guaranteed. They won’t remember Dubai, they won’t remember his ignominious decline or sacking. They’re know what we tell them, and his legend will grow.

I think like many others do, certain legacy stalwarts downed tools, and we bought poorly.

I reckon it’s beyond doubt he’s lost the dressing room. It’s a shame, but it happens – and Lenny does appear to have the same streak Souness did for falling out with people (albeit without the insufferable arrogance or fondness for violence….. and without the ridiculous wig). The buys have been pretty much awful – but then again, maybe that’s not them but the environment they’ve came into. A number of players disappear under poor regimes only to rise when circumstances suit them. It’s a worry so many players want to leave – it leaves me thinking something is far wrong at the club. But, that’s maybe a discussion for another day.

Lennon should leave his role and Lennon is a legend are not mutually exclusive. I wish more people could see that. I also wish more people could accept that maybe he’s wrong sometimes and call it like it is.

Anyway – thank you for BOTH lists. I’ll maybe underline why we owe Lenny gratitude at the same time as recognising he should go.

Talking of history, sad man that I am I looked up the article from Lenny’s departure last time round. I wanted to remind myself of how highly he was regarded by us all when he left, not just as a manager but as a Celtic man and person.

Interesting comment from today’s Scottish Financial News …

The administrators of Rangers FC who were maliciously prosecuted have been paid more than £20 million, The National reports.

Mr Whitehouse and Mr Clark were appointed as administrators of Rangers in February 2012 and the club was liquidated in October that year, shortly before both left their positions.

Do they still have Lodge meetings to decide on retribution for non-believers ?

I have been tracking this saga which will likely cost the Scottish taxpayers somewhere around £50m of public money due to malicious prosecution of people who were doing their jobs but were “messing with the Gers”.

I have approached my MSP Rona McKay who is on the public petitions committee to get advice about having an enquiry into the conduct of the police and prosecution service.

I have been underwhelmed by the engagement so far but I must bide my time as nothing can be done until all of the legal actions are completed through the courts which could take another couple of years yet.

Murdo Fraser has called for an inquiry.

Nicola Sturgeon has indicated that she thinks that an inquiry would be appropriate.

We must hold her and the Scottish government to account for this matter which to me, goes straight to the heart of our society.

    You are NL biggest fan.

Pardon? Lennon should rightly be regarded both with fondness and as a legend. That doesn’t mean he’s infallible. Nor does it mean his every utterance is right. I like to think my other half loves me, but when I say something daft and she tears me to bits for it, I understand why.

Like I say, “I love Neil Lennon” and “Neil Lennon is wrong” are not mutually exclusive positions. Far from it. As said before, he’s a legend, but he’s not infallible. Why is that a problem for you to understand or accept?
