In the next five weeks we play seven away games and only two at home (Ross County and Hearts). If we beat Partick Thistle on Saturday, a tenth game will happen during this timeframe, making the series either seven or eight away from home in 10 games.
Apart from the final games in the series, in Copenhagen, the others all have a must-win look to them. Thistle are struggling for form at the moment, so are unlikely to pose much of a threat, but we have two games on plastic – Kilmarnock and Hamilton – as well as trips to Motherwell and Aberdeen.
This is an exceptional load by any standards. Getting it right during this period will define our season.

Tontine Tim – As always a great read, thanks for that very informative post and I agree with the Gist of it, but everyone is entitled to their opinion of Mr Lawell, I know it’s hard to argue with the stats. Anyway and please excuse my ignorance so Deidco weren’t as sectarian in the early days of their formation, did they sign Catholics in those early days. A genuine question by the way I am not trying to be wide.
*thanks for the compliment, yes they did but given the demographics of the country more ken dodds were available to be signed by a whole host of clubs, however, prior to making the pledge the following are recorded as playing for them:
Pat Lafferty (1886), Tom Dunbar (1891–1892), J Tutty (1899–1900), Archie Kyle (1904–1908), Willie Kivlichan (1906–1907), Colin Mainds (1906–1907), Tom Murray (1907–1908), William Brown (1912), Joe Donnachie (circa.1914–1918) and John Jackson (1917).
It should be noted that after the ‘pledge” only 2 ben afflecks were signed and like future “mistakes’ such as lawrie blyth and don kitchenbrand they seemingly slipped through the cracks.
Archie Kyle incidentally is the legendary Frankie Miller’s grampa, in 1924, he and former Celt John Browning were found guilty of attempting to bribe Bo’ness player Peter Brown in a pub in Dundas Street, both men were sentenced to 60 days hard labour.
Both Tom Dunbar and Willie Kivlichan played for us as well. The latter though is the most intriguing one.
Willie, coming from the borders and being a bit precocious, was educated at St Josephs where he excelled, gaining all his highers, and then was sent to Blairs College with his da’s aspirations on him entering the priesthood.
However he didnae have the vocation so after 2 terms returned home, his da so disappointed cut him off but as he was such a skilful player he gained a place in the local Queen of the South team.
The following year he went back to school at Dumfries Academy for extra higher’s and was the sports champion that year. At that time deidco were looking for young players and their scouts saw him playing and asked him to play for them.
It’s worth noting here that it was at the local academy they spotted him.
As he was starting an MA course at Glasgow University he agreed as the extra money would come in handy. After a few years he also agreed to be part of a swap deal that would include Alec Bennet, a member of one of the clubs arguably greatest forward lines and the holder of 4 League, 2 SC and 3 GC winners medals, who it is now felt was poached by the huns although he was said to have left on the pretext he was a fan of theirs and it’s the only club he really wanted to play for, even though he not long before scored the winning goal against them that clinched the title for the leather belts.
Incidentally, he is alleged to have also later said that although he won one more GC winners medals (one less SC and Title though) as well as 8 caps as opposed to 3 with us and played for them 3 years longer he made a huge mistake leaving us as he was happier at Parkheid.
After reporting the huns tae the scottish freemason association we as usual lost the appeal, however, a deal was reached where we would get Willie Kivlichan, also a right winger, in return. Before arriving though he had also scored a winning goal this time for deidco against the Bhoys.
However nine months later the Glasgow Uni student hit another double to defeat his former side 2-1 at hades in the Scottish Cup.
Hard-working rather than exceptionally talented, Willie still scored a number of goals to help drive the first team on. He as well helped Celtic to three league titles and two Scottish Cups.
Willie was a practising Roman Catholic, it is rumoured that’s why the huns showed him the door, and was a member of the Third Order of St Francis aka the Secular Franciscan Order and during one match against Queen’s Park his scapulars fell and hung out from beneath his jersey, and for the eagle eyed among the crowd this was said to have “brought tears of joy to the eyes of the Parkhead faithful”.
He left us in April 1911 for Yorkshire, to Bradford Park Avenue to play under Tom Maley, he had played 92 League & Scottish Cup games for the Bhoys and scored 22 goals.
During the First World War, he served for the King’s Own African Rifles and was reported to be seriously injured on 30th Aug 1918, but luckily recovered and returned back to the Scottish borders by Sep 1920 where he played for Queen of the South reserves.
Willie completed his studies whilst playing football and qualified to become a Doctor. He was to be the Glasgow Police Surgeon as well as Celtic Club Doctor, but had the difficult experience of attending John Thomson on that tragic fateful day on the 5th day of September 1931 when John passed away after a fatal but accidental collision.
Sadly Willie himself died before his time at the early age of 47 of a heart attack, two days after watching the Celts beat Clyde in a Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden. He is buried at St Joseph’s Dumfries with a Celtic jersey laid on his coffin. A good Celt with a long history with the club winning 3 Titles 2 SC and 1 GC.
My interest in Willie first occurred about 40 year ago when his grandson moved into the same practice as our family GP over here. I knew of his grampa playing for us and them but, pre ‘net, after perusing several Celtic books did I find out the true extent of his move and the involvement of Alec Bennet.

Of course the share price fall could indicate that there is big trouble coming at Ibrox and could therefore affect us adversley indirectly.
But it can’t be just ignored – it has been going up because of our success and has been stable. There is always a reason – when Brendan left the SP dropped by 6p, also LTI our second biggest shareholder is having some issues.

*was sitting on the couch drinking coffee and eating Bavarian multi-grain with bramble jelly watching CNN this morning when I heard legendary and Emmy winning commentator discussing this. He stated that if cheating was allowed to prevail then we would all be better off watching WWE, at that point I almost fell off the couch because we have posters on here and other Celtic sites saying this for years..
As much as we like tae laugh at the septic tanks they don’t eff around with their sports, players routinely suspended for spousal abuse and gambling. We do the same unless you are on deidco’s books.

If there were a million or more traded you could speculate that maybe Lindsell Train were reducing their holding but today was just a couple of individuals for one reason or another selling their shares think total amount of shares traded was a little over 3000. Biggest trade 2,000 and a few for a couple of hundred each.
Worth keeping an eye on but I don’t see anything to get either excited or worried about.

McNut Shares go up or down depending whether there are more interested in buying or selling.
Often if Shares have had a very good run you can get a bit of profit trading.
Football shares are a bit different as Supporters buy them as an emotional Investment and not to make money.
However life is life and if someone has a bit of Financial difficulty they may have little option but to sell, you could also get a few who because they are pissed off with the Board might also decide to sell.
Personally I’d be more interested in the volume of shares traded rather than the price.

I agree with you on that point. Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen, Killie and St Johnstone have all regressed in the first half of the season.
St Mirren, Hamilton and Livingston are relatively the same.
The only improvement is Motherwell and Ross County who appear a better team than Dundee.
Celtic can only beat who is in front of them.
We’ve only dropped points in 3 games. We were denied at Easter Road by Kevin Clancy.
The loss at Livingston was instructive but Ryan Christie has to share the majority of the blame for a moment of madness.
It’s not a time to panic.

Yes, I agree we have a collection of talented players in the squad at present and a good crop of youngsters, e.g. Dembele, Okoflex…etc. However for the immediate task ahead, i.e. securing 9iar, are they the right players?
In the last two meetings against The Rangers, it didn’t look like it.
Maybe they are just being coached and set up wrong – then we must ask have we got the right manager and coaches?
In this similar position last year, having lost at Ibrox and been neck & neck with The Rangers at tge break, there was not the same level of anxiety, so why this year.

There’s still a massive frustration that this season and last we had the chance to put the league to bed at new year and failed, twice.
Now we’ve got to do it the hard way, again. I’m confident there will be no more bad days at the office domestically.
We need to win every game and we need a squad capable of doing that. We need a few more players but there’s no need to panic. We’re in a strong position in all fronts.

His constant reference to wee Jamesie is very close to the opinion that I held until I stopped complaining about him, mainly because my mother absolutely loved him.

I grew up with a da that had no time for the Celtic board yet didnae stop him drinking in Kelly’s pub in Alexandria, a pub managed by Joe Kelly the brother of the legendary James and uncle of Sir Bob, and allegedly the pub that amateur and apprentice joiner James was “given” as a signing on fee when he joined us.
He was able to separate his disparagement for the board from the club he dearly loved as well as the Celtic pub he drank in.
I’m a great believer of giving credit where credit is due and Peter’s made more than a few mistakes, Mogga to me was his biggest, however his record stands by itself.
In saying that though should we fail tae clinch the nine there will be no hiding place, nor should there be, for him.

Despite the negative end to the first part of the season I am very excited about the return of scottish football this weekend.
Win or lose I am just happy to have Celtic fc in my life.
These winter breaks really hammer it home how dreadful life is without Celtic fc.
English football [despite living here] offers me nothing.
Even the huge fixtures bore me.
I would prefer to watch our glasgow rivals rather than a EPL match as at least it means something to Celtic’s situation.
I do like watching the champions league even when we are not involved however.
Frankly, all this talk about 9 in a row etc, is becoming tiresome. All we should be focussing on is winning the league this year, end of. Everthing after that will take care of itself.
