A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

Remember to give me a shout if you would like to write an article for CQN Magazine, articles@cqnmagazine.co.uk.

  1. Is it tonight the corrupt rule bending associations team play the aussies?

I hope no one turns up to highlight what a shambles they have been during this whole charade.

    HAIL HAIL

  2. Green, aided ans abetted by the authorities, football and otherwise, is creating a dangerous, poisonous climate in Scotland.

His whipping up of hate and entitlement within the Sevco camp will lead to unrest IF the combined forces of the various football bodies and Strathclyde police don’t curb his rabble rousing.

Already, it has been transparently evident that Scotland is a cold house for anyone, particularly Celtic, who don’t lie down to the Establishment’s club.

Finally, I fervently wish that those of you who feel obliged to vent your hate for people whose political or other views you oppose, would do it elsewhere and keep a Celtic site for Celtic and football related matters.

    It smacks of hunlike behaviour.

No Celtic news slow day. Debate other topics fair enough. But hoping people die is poor. Not fans of any of these people but this is a Celtic site. Away in peddle your crap some where else.

  5. kojo, cheers for the reply :-)

now, all i can say is, if you don’t think we need a centre half, your seat points in a different direction to mine.

we conceded 7 goals in 2 games to a team so bad they’re now deceased last season.

mulgrew is good. rogne probably will be in time. wilson, ummm, naw.

but either way, ALL of them need a good, experienced centre half beside them to talk them through a game. too many stupid errors.

i think bougherra for a million would be a good deal, but for the obvious.

Was at a stag do on Saturday missed the whole Real Madrid game. Mate told me today Neil said no signings until after the Helsingborg games anyone hear this. Never seen it on here.

  9. What’s the general opinion on what Charles Green is doing?

“Rangers now, then, forever” etc., claiming their history, saying they’ve paid back their debts, been punished enough – apart from getting my dander up, surely this is trading on the goodwill of the liquidated company?

Has anyone with knowledge of company law commented on the likely action BDO will take? Are they going to wade into the Charles Green situation, or will they only be concerned with investigating the conduct of previous owners and CEOs?

i think he actually said it before the real madrid game in one of the press conferences if i mind right. but i do recall reading about him saying it.

he also however said “we’re now gauranteed european football until christmas” in the immediate aftermath of helsinki though, which i think was a wee bit of a “get the finger oot peter” as i understood it.

  12. Gracious and kindly CQNers,

I have a request from a group of 20 Helsingborg fans who have booked their passage for the 2nd leg of the tie against the mighty Celtic: what would be the best location for lodgings and merriment, one, obviously, devoid of Thems and their devilry?

    up-over_goal,

a few things are going on

rangers fc plc (IA) did not qualify for any winnings last season, they broke the rules of the competition, however the authorities are awarding them winnings and broadcast fee’s.

In Scotland there is no football debt priority status, all debt is equal, unlike England.

The football authorities are trying to impose debt priority against the law.

Rangers fc plc were due the broadcast fee, however that fee requires to be issued to the creditors, I hope BDO enfore this.

I can only think the spl are skint because they have been honouring rangers fc plc footballing debt.

  16. East Stirling fan on SSB says huns charging them £17 a ticket, thought maximum was £13? Duffy and Keevins obviously say thats fine.ES charge a tenner.

  17. Richard Gordon just said……………………naw! Surely not! Whit. My God I wouldn’t post that on here.

The Swedish lads are much beholding. These young lads (mid 20s) follow them all over. Indeed, they’ve been watching them since they were nippers, which is as long as I have known them.

That was a breath of fresh air on Clyde from the East Stirlingshire fan.

Duffy and Keevins were a disgrace attacking the guy.

  20. Disappointing to hear that Thomas Cook are not going to satisfy demand for the Helsingborgs day-trip. Looks like it’s only going to be one flight with Category A and B. If you’re in a lower category and they won’t take you, how the dickens can you go up in category? Be too sensible if they took first-come, first-served obviously, but no. Thomas Crook indeed.

  21. Canamalar,

Maybe the SPL are deliberately withholding money so that one or more teams get into difficulties and then they can say told you so.

    CQN fantasy league :- fantasy.premierleague.com

To all those who played last year, its a simple 5 minute job to re-register and set up your team, most of you will have probably forgotten your passwords so just type in your email and a recovery password will be sent to you.

New players just register normally, will take no longer than ten minutes.

This year I’ve gone for the classic league, literally most points wins over the course of the season compared to last years head to head system, where you played different people every week and three points for win, one for draw etc.

To join the league the code is :- 721106-181775

    Charles Green isn’t daft.

Well Hugh you are the man who said Campbell Ogilvie is an honourable man so we should all just leave him alone.

You’ve stated that Craig Whyte is definitely not involved with Green as it is your “belief”.

Last time I checked the word “belief” was not fact.

I can believe any number of things but it doesn’t make it true.

I’m sure your steadfast investigative journalism will bring out the “paper trail” as you put it.

How’s that coming along? I’d imagine the journalist who proves this alleged link (which may or may not be true) would have a hell of a story for his paper.

But if you’re content to get spoonfed “facts”

  28. So……let me get this right…..if the sfa is witholding tv & sponsorship money because of the sevcovians criminality (I mean, what the hell else could be the reason) then just what is going on? If the game is being so badly governed in Scotland then it must be incumbent on uefa to step in.

This whole mess is going too far.

  29. Finnegan,

Get the Helsingborg fans to check out the Premier Inn on George Street (George Square) – there is a group booking form. It’s currently at £57 per double/twin room if you book with no refund – a group booking may be cheaper.

It’s only a five minute walk to the Gallowgate from there.

  30. Reporting Scotland: SPL facing cashflow crisis. Haven’t paid clubs monies due to clubs at start of August.

This is the first knockings in the ‘SPL2’ or league reconstruction that we predict.
