A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

Re the SPL using monies due to rfc(ia) to pay off Scottish football debts .

When it became clear that CW had used PAYE/NIC to fund the running of that club ,to get them to the end of the season ,they should have been charged and booted out the league ,thus not eligible to get any 2nd place money .

If the SPL are giving out money ,has that money not been won by financial doping at the expense of all other SPL teams and not actually tax payers money ,as if CW had paid the PAYE/NIC ragers would have run out of cash mid season .

IMO this is just another scandal in this truly disgraceful episode

  2. Back after a week in Manchester to find a completely new layout. It’s very clean and clear.Hard to miss all the news when you’re in a house with no connection of any sort, with your daughter and son in law paying Sky a fortune for the non- privilege.Saw the Real match, and Madrid were steaming in. I thought the Real player fouled McGeouch deliberately–anyone else think that? Sergio Ramos in particular looked as if he meant to do damage.Anyway everything is rosy in old Scotland—Black (as yer boot) has been called up by Leivine to represent all that is good about the 3rd division. Makes you proud of football that.

I’m also frustrated at the low likelyhood of getting on the T.C. Charter to Sweden but cannot argue with the guys who have been going to the away games over the past few years and spending fortunes getting prio on trips.

And if that player was the CB that we had always wanted and had developed, would you sell him just because he could fetch top dollar or would you look to see if the overall strength of the team could be strengthed with those dollars?

If not would you sell, risk deterioration in results and possibly dollars or would you stick?

It is all about the team as a unit. At present I think we have enough good midfielders to sell one (Ki?) and use that income to buy a good partner for Hooper.

It is not always the case that the club have that luxury, a luxury their scouting and development programme set up a few years back by far sighted folk, has delivered.

Reporting Scotland: SPL facing cashflow crisis. Haven’t paid clubs monies due to clubs at start of August.

This is the first knockings in the ‘SPL2′ or league reconstruction that we predict.

Oh how I long for the good times when the most corrupt team in world football kept us all ticking over

  6. Evening bhoys, very, very hot, but as ever hun free.

I reckon yous should all lay off Chuckie, he has obviously agreed a CVA with the other scottish clubs re the debt.

    …………………………………………

Some amount of pish on the blog today btw.

  7. Bloke109

Guess they would run all the flights they could as long as they deemed that themselves and the club would make monies out of them. lol.

  8. Okay……if the spl is “facing a cashflow crisis”…..the latest gerrymandering in this huge fandango to keep the bigot circus on the road….then why are its executives not being shown the door, pronto?

    spl/sfl/sfa……absolutely corrupt.

I’m not talking about individual team managers…..I’m talkin’ about the sleekit suits and the luj members skulkin’ about with the sole intention of makin’ sure the ratbags in the bigotdome keep on keepin’ on. That seems to be their most pressing concern. Not football. Only the bigots.

    It is unbelievably scandalous.

What makes me laugh is that Rangers agreed to waive any claim on that money. They AGREED? They should have been told to go places. What is happening is that the SPL is paying off Rangers debts using money that should have gone to all the other SPL clubs.

When Rangers say they have paid anything you can guarantee it is with other people’s money.

    Mick,

Thanks mate. I’ll be honest I haven’t checked that acct so didn’t read it yet. I’ll try and get through for them as soon as. Cheers.

  13. Ah the old Celtic Basle game. Was at a quarterly meeting with my company in Pontefract that day, hoping to get away sharpish and drive to CP. Anyway meeting over ran, travelled up as far as I could and hit the first pub in Gretna. The game was allready started and Celtic were one down, with all the locals (hvns) in jovial mood. Anyway I kept quiet, kept the head down and watched the game, then made sure I gave big yes at the final whistle to GIUT.

Missing that game cost me in the final count for a ticket for Seville, I was 9th, we only got 8 tickets.

    Did’nt stop me going but.

  14. MIKI67 @ 1.53,

You seem to have given up claiming that you don’t hate: well, that’s a step forward. However, the main step that you & your fellow-haters who’ve come out of the woodwork need to take is to stop hating.

Several posters have made efforts to persuade us that Mrs Thatcher ranks with Hitler & Stalin. They completely miss my point: I did not say that it’s wrong to hate her because she was a good P.M, but because she’s a human being & this blog is supposed to be inclusive. In other words, this isn’t about her – it’s about us.

Your comments about deregulation of markets & the “collapse of capitalism” are not based on facts, but in any case they’re not relevant to my post.

I don’t know whether you made up your definition of Fascism or found it in some second-rate reference book: you’ll find a much better one in Wikipedia, which points out inter alia that Fascism advocates a state-controlled & regulated economy with protectionist & interventionist policies. Maggie Thatcher came to power through a democratic election & was confirmed by the 2 that followed: what’s Fascist about that?

South of Tunis states clearly that she was no Fascist: as he disliked her, he obviously has no axe to grind on her behalf. Note that he lives in the country that was ruled by real Fascists for 2 decades (where I also spend much of the year).

The attitude of Philboy who doesn’t like Maggie but doesn’t wish her dead is praiseworthy: that of the haters is despicable.

  15. It’s back!

    CQN fantasy league :- fantasy.premierleague.com

To all those who played last year, its a simple 5 minute job to re-register and set up your team, most of you will have probably forgotten your passwords so just type in your email and a recovery password will be sent to you.

New players just register normally, will take no longer than ten minutes.

This year I’ve gone for the classic league, literally most points wins over the course of the season compared to last years head to head system, where you played different people every week and three points for win, one for draw etc.

To join the league the code is :- 721106-181775

    Enjoy !

It was deliberate and cowardly by Real player.

He had a clear sightline and chose to drive shoulder into Dylans face.

If accidental it would have been a clash of heads if he went for ball.

I will sign up but be warned I signed up to Fleagle1888 tipster and forgot on SAT :((

  20. Saw the scotland team earlier.

Delighted and bewildered that there is no scottish player of the year in the team.

So the manager and coaching staff reckon that Webster, Berra, and Fox are better than Chas, I truly despair.

I hope they get humiliated, it’s what they deserve.

  21. Germany v. Argentina friendly starting shortly if anyone’s interested. Both teams have a pretty strong line-up, only a few players out. Messi starts for Argentina

  22. archdeaconsbench on

Charlie Chalks no daft is he? A few weeks ago the hordes were on his trail, wantin to know where his hotel was in the city centre, refusing to buy season tickets. So he decides to press the hun flesh (raither him than me), pose for a few pictures in ‘oor Jockies sash’ and promise tae release a new away kit resplendent with ‘knuckledragger tangerine cadet flash..’

Result, 30+k season tickets sold. When will they learn???

    Stupid, stupid, stupid huns….

  23. There was a wee bit background noise when I heard Sevco’s advert on Snyde,I’m sure it said “no paying then,no paying now,no paying ever”…..

  24. I’m personally glad that Charlie overlooked the nite, the next couple o wks far too important for us to have players risking injury playing in a meaningless friendly for “pandering to thems hoardes” levein

    HH

  25. Is there a reason Kris Commons isn’t even in the squad?

We know why Steven Fletcher isn’t, and its ridiculous that a manager who invited back the three oldco players who ‘walked away’, yet doesn’t sort out any problem with arguably the best striker at his disposal.
