A decade on from Basel

1055

Ten years ago this morning we were celebrating what appeared to be the importance of a Momo Sylla goal two minutes from time to give Celtic a 3-1 first leg lead against FC Basel in the Champions League play-off round.

The previous season Celtic defeated a formidable sounding Ajax team at the same stage so when they were drawn against the Swiss team confidence was high.  Two weeks later our record of poor results away from home in Europe’s top competition was further cemented as Basel gained an away goal advantage.

That failure worked out well for Martin O’Neill’s team who dropped to the Uefa Cup and progressed all the way to the Seville final but Neil Lennon will be aware that Helsingborgs carry no less a reputational threat to Celtic than Basel did a decade ago.  Basel were not a better team than Celtic but a slow start to both games, and a missed penalty, cost us entry to the Champions League.  We will need to be better prepared next week.

Paul Larkin’s latest book, Albert, Dougie and Win, is available to purchase from Lulu.  The three-in-one book covers the days and events surrounding Celtic’s 1986 league win in From Albert, with Love, the SFA’s 2010 challenges in Dougie, Dougie, and the men who stopped 10 in Wim’s Tims.  Fascinating stories written by one of the very best Celtic authors.

I have no interest in Scotland despite trying on several occasions to get excited. I just can’t get up for the games..even attended a few a couple of seasons ago to be abused for being a tim…

Do you know anyone who travels on the Blantyre bus and would you be able to find out if they have any spare seats for Dingwall?

My bus is going up on the Friday night but I’ve got R’s Daughters 18th party then so can’t go up until the Saturday. I can get on a bus from the east end but it would be much more convenient if I could get on one nearer home.

    If Ah wuz..

    Well.. that’s anither story..”

That ither story would involve losing out on £10m for Aiden cos you’ld have swapped him for the magic beans that were Liam Lawrence.

We’d have earned no transfer fee for Shaun Maloney as you’d have paid him to go and you’d have filled up the team with brammers that are now playing for Thistle, or on the bench at St. Johnstone, and Dundee United.

God save us from the lighthouse thinking of Kojo. A butterfly with ADHD watching multi-channel TV would be more constant.

  9. Can someone pls explain why the SPL would suddenly have a cash flow problem?

I just don’t get it what has changed in their revenue stream??

The ex Govan team never paid ANYONE last year so it can’t be the loss of thems can it??

See when Charlie goes and sits in with the Blue Order ,I look forward to the first journalist asking what he thinks of his new fans party tunes and whether he is happy with their song sheet .

May be a tricky question for Charlie as he has now firmly nailed his colours to the mast .

He could not possibly criticise them so will he condone it

Then again the question will not be asked so no worries after all

i guess you could say maggie thatcher (spits) inspires an unparalleled level of hate among large swathes of the public, having inspired:

The Specials – Ghost Town, Maggie’s Farm

Elvis Costello – Tramp The Dirt Down, Shipbuilding

Hefner – The Day Margaret Thatcher Dies

Crass – How Does It Feel To Be The Mother Of A Thousand Dead

Billy Bragg – Between The Wars

    The The – Heartland

The Exploited – Maggie You C***

The Beats – Stand Down Margaret

    Chumbawumba – Fitzwilliam

Public Enemy – Prophets of Rage

Morissey – Margaret on The Guillotine

The Notsensibles – I’m In Love With Margaret Thatcher

Does this make her a fascist? Goddamn right

Thanks for that. I am quite familar with the development and application of the Enneagram including the spirituality and integration/disintegration aspects of growth.

I was wondering if you could add more about the Suffi connection, which I agree does lend it an added mysticism.

One line I heard was that the only person(ality) to have all nine gifts in healthy balance was Christ. Whether that is true or not I like the idea of that kind of wholeness as opposed to holiness, a model to follow.

The other thing that makes it very useful for personal development is that I was able to recognise in my own life the movements of integration that had alraedy happened before I had heard of the Enneagram. (You tend to believe a set of directions that says “You are here” on a map and when you look aroud you find you are)

If it just becomes another device for personality development as opposed to spritual development (like Belbin is for organisations)then it will probably run its course like Myers Briggs.) However if it used to raise self awareness AND awareness of other selfs leading to spiritual development it may last the course and develop along with the rising awareness personal and spiritual that it brings into being.

I’m just about to switch on the Scotland game, for no other reason than there’s nothing else on tv that I fancy watching. Will be interested in seeing how Rhodes play though. Anyone else think we have a chance of signing him if we sell Ki to Arsenal?

  18. BT perhaps sometime in the future, the SFA will not be run by the orangemen who are strangling scottish football……….

It would be great to one day support the Scottish football team again, until they’re cleared out then I’m the same as you, there’s only one team in Scotland worth supporting.

I belive it is a loan and in addition if they think Ticketus are not waiting to syphon off the £27M the loaned CW at some point, then they probably fill up their petrol tanks at the tooth fairy petrol station.

  20. Still cannot believe that scumbag did not even receive a booking for the challenge on wee Dylan.

Invited to Mourinho’s cousin’s house but can’t trust mrs. TWGM as she would not hold back on his management style!
