A gentleman that’s going round Turning the joint upside down

There’s a gentleman that’s going round
Turning the joint upside down
Stool Pigeon – ha-cha-cha-cha
He’s an old ex-con that’s been away
Now he’s back, no one’s safe

It’s quite likely that David Grier and Craig Whyte had many conversations they didn’t want replayed on BBC Reporting Scotland.  Their deal to acquire Rangers from Sir David Murray and Lloyds Banking Group would have required many scenarios to be considered, some of which would certainly be unpalatable.  So with this in mind, Grier may have been comfortable discussing strategy with Whyte when the latter recorded their conversation in May this year.  They had been in the proverbial trenches together before and at one time would have had a bond of trust.

What frankly beggars belief is that either party would consider this bond to be still in place a month after Duff and Phelps sued Craig Whyte’s company for £25m.  It’s even more surprising that Mr Grier and Mr Whyte were on such convivial terms – chatting liberally in a restaurant about such a serious matter – while they were supposed to be on opposite sides of a £25m legal action.

We now know that Rangers administration went miles off track soon after it started. Whyte, as we predicted back in October last year, hoped to present creditors and Scottish football with a fait accompli.  Duff and Phelps were to complete the task within days for a fixed fee of a fraction of what they eventually raised.

Instead Duff and Phelps fee increased by a factor of six, Whyte lost control of events and inherited a great deal of litigation, not to mention a police inquiry.  Duff and Phelps must now prepare to tell the truth to Lord Hodge next week.  There are millions of pounds at play here and anything short of the truth could land them in heaps of trouble.

Credit to Mark Daly and Reporting Scotland for landing the recording.  The BBC are taking a pounding this month but this was a stunning item for an evening news bulletin to present.

Craig Whyte, you will remember, threatened to sue Daly last year and managed to convince the hard of thinking that Daly, and the BBC, were victimising Rangers by dishing the dirt on Whyte.  Some still adhere to this belief, despite now realising their Messiah was just a naughty boy, it’s a cognitive dissonance thing.  Another lesson that football fans are fools for bombast.

After all the talk then they wired him
And he took a walk with his crooked friends
And they joked about the good old days
And he recorded it on a reel of tape
He caught the mug who did in the forgery
And the babe in charge of larceny

We have to wonder what liquidators BDO will make of Duff and Phelps actions when they take over next week.  Ha-cha-cha-cha.

  1. On 31st. May Paul wrote the following:

Much of the response from Duff and Phelps to last night’s revelations by Mark Daly on the BBC website centred around their fees. BBC revealed that partner, David Grier, emailed Craig Whyte to say, “We propose to cap our fees in respect of an (sic) CVA or Administration to £500k, however, we request the ability to discuss with you an additional payment in respect of our total time costs, in so far as this does not impact on your position.”

Contracting to cap fees at £500k when you subsequently bill creditors £3.5m for your own time plus £2m legal costs would embarrass many of us, though not everyone. Duff and Phelps added a caveat that they could discuss additional payment as long as it did not impact on Craig Whyte’s position, which they perhaps did.

The more interesting part of the exchange between Whyte and Greir is their preparation for “HMRC being hostile”.

    Craig Whyte:

“I’d like to speak to David [Whitehouse] and Paul [Clark] to make sure that they’re comfortable with the fact that we might end up with HMRC being hostile (I suspect this will end up being the case so you should go into it with your eyes open)”

    David Grier:

    “Agreed.”

It is fascinating to wonder how comfortable Mr Whitehouse and Mr Clark were with Craig Whyte’s plans in the event HMRC were hostile. HMRC are Rangers largest creditors. Administrators run the company in the interests of the creditors, not the shareholders.

Three days after this email exchange Rangers went to court to insist Duff and Phelps were appointed administrators instead of an appointment by HMRC.

MSM eat your heart out. Well done oor Paul!!!

  2. The plan all along was to have a new ragers in the spl, doncaster/ogilvie

must have told them we`ll get you in. Duff n phelps kept the playing staff

(resulting in them walking away for nothing). Fans wouldn`t have it and then

the armageddon story(doncaster again). The sfl refused to be bullied

and new ragers found themselves in the 4th tier of scottish football and

    now its meltdown

I have to admit thought Whyte may have been a patsy

    not so sure now.

Haven’t seen their team, but they are really struggling to score these days.

Don’t think I will have a wager on it before ko, will wait to see the in play.

I can only tell you what I was told by someone who is still involved & v. close to the action

But I accept I may have been given a BS.

    Miku was same situ

  8. Big Vic like some of our fans thinks he is a world class player. In my opinion he has the potential but he has a long way to go.At the moment I cannot see any of the top teams i.e.Man U ,Chelsea, ect coming in for him in the near future.Maybe someone like Everton,Aston Villa ect.He would be better to accept the improved contract for now, get his head down and work on his game.If we are offered £ 6 mil + and he wants to go next transfer window I would let him go

Btw watching bake off master class..just waiting for the jelly and ice cream roll recipe ..fingers crossed

  14. Do games you were at, suddenly pop into your head, like brief glimpses of them -from years ago….why does that happen, a few I was thinking about we’re if anyone remembers a game at Greenock Cappielow years ago in the pish in’ rain (does it ever no rain there?) when we lost 2-1 and mo Johnson scored his second goal for celtic. Anyone remember mcstay scoring against Gehnt. A home game against Motherwell early in the season after we won the 100th scottish cup think we won 2-1 but it was Davie provan who was immense that day. A big 7-0 against Motherwell with chas nick on fire?

  15. BDO must step in now ?expose The Hustle and nullify Green’s deal.Do the Creditors not have a say here?

  16. Valentine’s Day

I still believe CW is a patsy, I think he has sussed that they, whoever they are, are going to stiff him.

He is not as daft as they thought.

A hero in my eyes :>)

    ………………………………………….

    Lennybhoy

I think we will accept 7 mill, buy two others for a mill each sell them for 7 mill, easy peasy :>)

And if big Fraser gets a cap for england, he will be worth 12 mill.

Easy when you are PL !!!!

  17. STV seemed to think that the Wanyam, and before it, Hooper, stories are reflecting negatively on Celtic.

    Negative?

We’ll rake in around £20 million for the 2 of them.

That’s enough to cushion any CL failure next season, AND give Lenny the best part of £10 mill to spend if required to go find another two low-cost, high-value replacements.

    Or…

£20 million for those two players is more than enough to buy the Huns outright and shut them down for good.

Maybe STV’s incumbent mouthy Huns should mull that one over.

Glasgow Celtic – Scottish football’s ONLY superpower.

  18. Macjay1,

While some may think the sentence excessive, it could be just what’s needed to prevent a recurrence – in which case it’s the best thing for the young offender himself.

Re Carluke, it has some great Tims as well as bitter huns: I’d say that the Tims tend to bitterness too (those whom I know best are of Alec Burnett’s family).

I won’t get into your dispute with Canamalar as I’ve not followed it & he’s recently made peace with me. However, I’m on your side: what sticks in my mind about Pilger is that after bigging up North Vietnam, when they invaded the South, he fled from Saigon in a US helicopter.

  19. Victor is potentially brilliant, but his game is frequently littered with mistakes.

In this sense he reminds me a little of Petrov.

Doubt he’d end up top 4 of EPL yet. Maybe in a few years…

  20. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

I read the other day that CELTIC PARK is 778 square metres smaller than NOU CAMP.

This is about 20% bigger than the penalty area. A fair amount less space for Barca,in other words.

    So here’s my plan.

We extend our pitch to the same dimensions as NOU CAMP,but Barca aren’t allowed in our penalty area.

    Works for me………

  21. Sandman couldn’t agree more. I’ll be disappointed when good players leave but it’s changed days from the departures of Dalglish, Nicholas etc. Players will move on and when it’s in the best interests of the club to move them on then so be it, but I’ll enjoy watching them in the meantime.

  22. johann

They did, and they were a pleasure to be with.

A few beers will be good, looking forward to it, going to make a wee break out if it, neither myself or the wife have been to Portugal before.

No looking forward to the drive mind you.

    …………………………………………………………..
