A healthier league

482

I have watched a bit of the Championship on BBC Scotland recently.  It’s seldom brilliant football but almost always entertaining.  For most of the season I despaired at the prospect of Arbroath picking up the automatic promotion spot.  The last thing we need is another tiny club with tiny resources lining their entire team along the 18-yard line.

This is unfair, of course.  What this tiny team have achieved to get within a whisker of the topflight is remarkable.  With Premiership TV money, they could emulate Ross County and previously Hamilton.  They would bring little interest to the league, but seven figure payments go a long way when you carry low overheads.

The alternative is Kilmarnock, a side with vastly greater resources and a truly terrible artificial surface.  Inverness and Partick will likely compete with the Premiership’s 11th club for the remaining topflight spot.  Raith seem to have lost their way since the Goodwillie fiasco.

Clubs only survive in the lower leagues so long before whatever local appeal they had fades to an insignificant level.  Dunfermline have a history, a decent sized local population, with an affluent business community, but the Leishman days are gone for good, never mind the Stein era.  Ironically, it could be Raith, newly relevant in Kirkcaldy, who are more likely to bounce.

Former Celtic central defender, John Hughes, is currently managing Dunfermline.  He led Falkirk to the topflight 19 years ago, then onto the top half of the table and a Scottish Cup Final.  When he left for an ill-advised spell at Hibs, Falkirk never recovered.  They have lost more than they’ve won in League One this season.

I’ll regret whoever goes down of Dundee or St Johnstone.  Both are sold clubs with enough fans to do better.  Despite the pitch, a Kilmarnock would be welcome.  It makes for a healthier league.

  1. AnT,

Are you implying that money doesn’t trickle down!!! 😱

The Champions league is dull in my eyes. There was a time when Real Madrid v Bayern Munich* (or whoever) was a big deal but when it comes around every couple of years it loses the magic.

Even if every team went into a knock out before the leagues, or the leagues weren’t seeded so you’d get a group of death 4 of the favourites in it and maybe an easy path for some outsiders it might level the playing field a bit. It doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul – though I’d prefer if it was.

*Though obviously Iniquitousiv will still be watching it 😅

Has the league finished in March ?

I think you are taking this post from “somebody on KDS” a bit far, I can’t even find the u-18 table !!! If you could provide a link to the website it would be much appreciated

    Cheers

You really need to try harder.

KDS — Lowland League Thread / last or second last page.

    Sorted.

Apologies you didn’t make it clear earlier, so the under 18s aren’t actually playing against other u-18s and actually playing in the lowland league ??

If you had posted Celtic B team playing against lowland league teams it would have made more sense, your original point made it out to be Celtic u-18s we’re 9th in the u-18 league … by the way, I think there are around half a dozen 16yr olds in the 23 man squad, hope one or two make the first team in their football journey

Cheers again for the football chat

Hopefully this time next week we shall all be celebrating a sound thrashing of the trailer park troglodytes.

  6. I could be incorrect but are Celtic B not sitting 4th just now ???

I suppose I could be wrong MM

One persons 9th is another persons 4th

If incorrect, apologies, I was only trying to try harder

    Cheers again

Your right, the prestige has gone, the magic eroded as we can barely watch a full game of that quality, and that quality is usually berthed in one of the big5 countries.

Trickle down….yeh, once we get a centre half/forward,goalie,fullback,centre and defensive mid, then it can trickle where ever it wants 🤣,(typical tim:-)

Sky don’t even reveal their Scottish subscription numbers.could be argued your actually supporting the English game in subscribing

Am glad I go to a game, don’t really need their debate

AT, the puggy. Knew it well. My Dad had a shop at Kennishead/Summerlee Road.

    Selling? Type? Of shop 🤣

A lot used to use the old puggy rail line as a short cut to thornliebank Rd from arden coming out there at those shops at one end and the wee hill up to Arden from carnwadric Rd at the other.100 or so houses in were old carnwadric community centre used to be.

Well what a lovely day I had. I had the house or garden to myself. Mrs David66 was out with her sisters and mum (Grace 80 years young). Still out.

I had a 6 hour debate with my mate/neighbour (fergusslayedtheblues) of this parish, son and grandson about next weeks game and we all came to the same conclusion. We will pump them if Ange has a squad to pick from.

You might give Hart Cleaning, Mossend Works, off Main St, Bellshill a call. Their number used to be 0169 884 4222. I know they do janitorial and industrial cleaning materials, but I’m not sure if they do the machinery.

    Good luck.
