A lot of work in margins needed before Malmo

663

Malmo’s season started well. They were undefeated in their first eight games, recording wins against current league leaders, Gothenburg, and recent champions, Helsingborg, as well as a 2-2 draw at Elfsborg, but form soon slumped.

They’ve only recorded back to back wins in the league once since. Wednesday’s 3-0 over Salzburg is by some measure their best result of the season. Right now, there will be a lot of football fans in Austria wondering how on earth Salzburg are out of the Champions League. There’s a fair chance there’s just as many fans in Sweden wondering how Malmo remain in the competition, but there are clues.

Salzburg lost narrowly to Rapid Vienna days before the capitulation in Sweden, the second reversal in two league games this season. They beat a team from a regional league in the cup (0-7) but that and the 2-0 win over Malmo is the only positives in an early season full of panic.

Preseason friendlies are not to be regarded as an indication of anything, but home win over a weak-looking Southampton was the only friendly in which they avoided defeat in four attempts. At most this indicates their fitness was behind the curve.

The most telling inferences from all of these stats is that the margins between success and failure for Malmo, Salzburg, and Celtic, are tight. We could and should have beaten Maribor a year ago. Dedryck Boyata’s late goal against Qarabag transpired to be all that separated us from them. We are looking fit, and organised, but you and I both know we’ve yet to spark up front. We have a lot of work to do in the margins before the end of the month.

Of course I believe you I think we played Real Sociedad the Basque mob about the same time, 1980 was my first ever old firm game, the infamous cup final, I was 10yr old in a mixed car, the guy driving was a Rangers fan (they were Rangers back then) my mum and his mum were old school gossiping over the back wall, he was probably the only guy my mum would have let me go with, Lennybhoy you know the Celtic fan in the car with us, he drank in the West End (langloan) then the Georgian hotel……….anyway I digress, FrannyB if you are still about I had the odd pint in the West End (Airsrie) back in the 2000s as I interloper to Whinhall (Davidson Steet) for a few years, obviously those are years I will never get back, did you ever travel on the bus from St Margerets chapel, we travelled up to Aberdeen in the 90s with them all the time

Any one who has met him has stated on here that he is a lovely man,

I have no doubt that this is true.

However some of his behaviour on here is crazy.

He fell out with me ages ago over ronny out. Fair enough, I deserve it. But it is just a silly joke, after a match I said weefra out. He took offence.

Then he objected to people posting in foreign languages ( irish mainly but Latin and french also) he thought people might be having a go at him in a foreign language.

Then came the nuke the lotta dem remark

Personally I think the guy has issues

Praecepta – to get one of the 22 automatic places – it’s all about the coefficient. This is made up of two elements – the country coefficient and the club coefficient. The country coefficient is hopeless for us as the likes of Aberdeen, St. Johnstone, Inverness etc keep getting knocked out so early. So we rely entirely on the club coefficient, which obviously improves the more points you get in the Champions League.

My main point is that Benfica have consistently aimed to be 3rd in their Champs League group, so that they can then get a successful run in the Europa League, where they pick up the same coefficient points.

It’s a great strategy – they end up in Pot 1 of the Champions League each year, they come third, they do well in Europa so they keep their coefficient high – a virtuous circle.

I feel as if I’m barking at the moon with this theory – so tomorrow I’ll do you the stats on the last six years for them – how many times they’ve been top seeds, how many times they’ve finished third, and how many times they’ve then had a successful Europa League campaign.

  4. Lenny Izzy had a decent game on Wednesday but was still caught out of position too often. Not good enough for CL.

I’ve long been of the opinion-stated it here frequently-that Celtic PLC knew the script wi Rangers.

They knew they were gubbed and decided to let things run their course. Had they got involved with sanctions of any sort, they would have been crucified.

    Kicking a man when he’s down,etc.

    And entirely unjustified because…

Celtic letting it go,trusting to the laws of the land, the laws of the game, any law you care to mention, would give the same result.

    Liquidation,and cheerio cheerio.

I don’t blame Celtic for what has happened. I blame a criminal abuse of every law applicable to this particular case.

My cousin taxi driver out here, who is obviously Celtic daft always worked when those bams were walking, he said he made a fortune, he then stopped as one day one eijit clocked his Saint Christopher next to his mirror, (norn Ireland accent) thankfully one of them had a bit of sense and stopped the other 3 eijits from attacking him, little did the clowns know St Christopher was looking after them travelling…..

  24. Phyllis D

Get where you’re coming from. Been looking at the stats and if you assume 17 of the 22 places go to the top 3 leagues (x3) and next 4 (x2) = 17.

So that leaves 15 dived as follows; 5 (x1) top seeds, 5 (x1) from the top countries that get 3/4 places and 5 (x1) via the Champions Route = 15 – makes up the 32!

So in effect we would need to jump up 20 places minimum (20+ co-e points = last 16 with 4+ wins = 5 chances) to get an automatic Group Stage place (or win the Europa) – otherwise we will continue to be in the Champion’s Route (= 5 chances).

    Tough gig!
