A lot of work in margins needed before Malmo

663

Malmo’s season started well. They were undefeated in their first eight games, recording wins against current league leaders, Gothenburg, and recent champions, Helsingborg, as well as a 2-2 draw at Elfsborg, but form soon slumped.

They’ve only recorded back to back wins in the league once since. Wednesday’s 3-0 over Salzburg is by some measure their best result of the season. Right now, there will be a lot of football fans in Austria wondering how on earth Salzburg are out of the Champions League. There’s a fair chance there’s just as many fans in Sweden wondering how Malmo remain in the competition, but there are clues.

Salzburg lost narrowly to Rapid Vienna days before the capitulation in Sweden, the second reversal in two league games this season. They beat a team from a regional league in the cup (0-7) but that and the 2-0 win over Malmo is the only positives in an early season full of panic.

Preseason friendlies are not to be regarded as an indication of anything, but home win over a weak-looking Southampton was the only friendly in which they avoided defeat in four attempts. At most this indicates their fitness was behind the curve.

The most telling inferences from all of these stats is that the margins between success and failure for Malmo, Salzburg, and Celtic, are tight. We could and should have beaten Maribor a year ago. Dedryck Boyata’s late goal against Qarabag transpired to be all that separated us from them. We are looking fit, and organised, but you and I both know we’ve yet to spark up front. We have a lot of work to do in the margins before the end of the month.

I don’t know if that’s a compliment or an insult.

    But it’s fine

I won’t flounce, or even report you to the blog police

Chill out wee man nobody is going to stop you going to the corner , there are people in life who we don’t see eye to eye with my advice is to avoid conflict or banter . I get the impression you are very stressed at the moment and feel like venting frustration . Listen yo BMCUW and HT have a wee break if that helps. TET this is not a criticism of you , I’ve had low points with health so know what it’s like. Anyway if griffiths doesn’t make it tommorrow I would play Efe at CH beside Boyata and put big Virgil up front. That would shock them.

I couldn’t believe the flight times when I saw them, however, it makes the trip to Kilmarnock on Wednesday even more appetising! :-)

Ha I downloaded 3 of their albums before I came out here so have been listening to them a lot. Great memories of many nights during the nineties!!

  6. Listen wee man

You are the one who started this pish, you are the one who is breaking the blog rules attacking other posters.

You are the one who wants to bomb the feck out of people, nuke them in fact.

So take your petted lip and stick it up your bahookie.

Do not mention me again, forget I even exist.

Do yourself a favour and just forget about me, cos trust me, after tonight, you don’t exist, you are never a Celtic man, I honestly can’t believe I was taken in by your pish, my fault, I need to up my game big time.

No go away and bother someone else.

    wits,

Always had a soft spot for Everton since I was a wean.He hasn’t a clue. All about not losing a game.Draw suffices. He had four defenders and three defensive midfielders against Watford at home and Watford controlled long spells of the game.A balloon..

    Martinez out..

Just watched the Dundee Hearts game on Alba (Not interested in the foreign fitba’ on BBC1!)

I think a couple of those Hearts players will be kicking lumps out of us (with SFA sanctioned impunity) in the near future !!

I like everton myself, have been to Goodison a few times, always enjoyed it, nice little ground,

Martinez needs to up his game alright but I don’t think he will be first to go. ..In the EPL managerial merry go round this year

The myth of Martinez, been going for a few years now in the self proclaimed greatest league in the world. The guy, like his pal across Stanley Park, couldn’t spell defence let alone set one up.

Thank you so much for your input. Fortunately BMCUW is the only blogger, and I will admit, a friend, who has supported me totally. You can rest assured, the “corner” will be given a wide berth from now.

Dexter, why do you put Leverkusen in the not so nice bunch.

Leverkusen stadium is 15 minutes from my place in Cologne, granted it’s a small stadium and tickets would be tricky but if we draw Leverkusen in the group stage, after getting past Malmo of course, I will personally make sure that any CQN’ers who visit have the best away trip ever, tickets or no tickets.

    ——-

Sorry lhad!! It was just that the other pot 2s were both Madrids, Man U, Man City, Porto, arsenal and Valencia/Monaco.

I’ve never been to Köln but if we draw Leverkusen ill be in touch!!

  17. Captain Beefheart on

    Dexter,

Zenit would be a terrific draw.

Beautiful city, good but beatable opponents. Their fans know us and like us. ‘Irish’ bars around the stadium. Personally it would be a dream.

    GARY,

To be slightly fair to Martinez he has very little cash to work with but he should be going for it at home against cannon fodder like Watford.

Rogers on the other hand has spent nearly 300 million .Staggering.

  19. Papajoe55

    None taken.

But the wee man needs to get real and stop with his pish.

I don’t come on here to fight with people, he did tonight, and I will not be responsible for his fecked up head.

  21. FOOTBALL POST KLAXON FLOUNCERS BEWARE

Read something that GMS has scored a fair chunk of his league goals against the Maryhill Massive. Can’t remember the stats so ill just say about 6.

Anyway with Leigh out or not 100% at least and Cifti suspended this is the kind of game that the wee smiley cheucter can make a difference.

He’s got the skills to see us through these sometimes tricky matches.

It only took him half a minute to score on his debut here.

And the Firhill weather should suit him and his peely wally complexion a lot better than the searing heat of Baku.

So 2-0 GMS is the top tip.( Ronny loves a 2-0, think he backs us minus a goal but under 2.5 as well) Some bhoy that Ronny Deila.

Carsons & the Segton have just emptied looking for Strawberry Fields, thankfully they are looking for big red houses either green leaves at the side,, take care and just tell them they are in raspberry fields they won’t know the difference !

  23. Tricoloured Ribbon on

Think we are getting ahead of ourselves discussing group teams.

A victory over Malmo will be a big win for us.

We still need a prolific scorer and a defence splitting midfielder too.

  24. I can dream also.

If it goes to best plan we sneak into pot3.

Pot 1 has lots of teams we played before.

I would really like to play new ish teams , avoiding the dutch, but here goes , using Bert kassies listings …..

    1. PSG.

    2. Real Madrid or man city.

    3. Celtic.
