Aberdeen, progress and truths of competition

445

Winning the league is hard, or at least it should be.  Aberdeen are finding that out as they unnecessarily dropped points on Saturday.  Celtic have had it easy for so long we’ve forgotten a few truths of competition.

Sitting 6 points clear, and (again) confident of winning the league, we can constructively appreciate the job Derek McInnes has done at Pittodrie.  They are very likely to come up short this season, but the gap between them and Celtic is not the chasm it used to be.

For years we discussed that what Scottish football really needs is teams like Aberdeen and Dundee United comfortably outperforming Motherwell and Inverness.  No disrespect intended for the latter two, but Aberdeen have hugely better resources, if we are to receive a genuine challenge, it will come from there.
I was also delighted to see the 15k attendance at Pittodrie on Saturday, reflecting the bounce that has occurred at Tynestle this season.  Figures like that will help Aberdeen (and Hearts) solidify.  Both can make a profit at that level.

Progress isn’t linear, so don’t be surprised if Aberdeen or Hearts don’t leap forward next season, but the chances of them being overhauled by a smaller club is slight.  The future looks healthier than the past.

    Summary

The Celtic defenders pull up Hamilton player is now offside when the ball is played to him.

Boyata then reacts to the ‘no flag’ decision recovers and makes a sliding tackle.

Boyata has made 3 correct key decisions here:

    1) Held the line

    2) Puts his hand up for offside

    3) Recovers after the non-call a makes a saving tackle, by clearly making contact with the ball

Thomson, however has made a typically poor call from his position on the field, miles behind the play.

The linesman does not keep up with play can’t see across the line and misses a clear offside when the ball is played.

  3. Peter Lawwell, not lawell or liewell as some of the disrespectful (© warbo) refer to him is the Executive Director, Head of Operations of our beloved club. He was appointed to this role as many of the previous incumbents who had the CEO title had performed poorly. He reports to the Board.

His jobs is to ensure that we are financially viable, he does not pick the team or even go intae the dressing room (only Bob Kelly did that).

He deals with player contracts, the days of a manager getting involved with contracts, even paying players to go abroad and sit their coaching badges, are over.

A manager can have an input but as Alan Sugar once said there are no managers out there who don’t want just one more player, that’s all they need.

The days of the likes of big Jock dumping players like Wispy and the Bear or going in the huff because Davie Hay challenged the bonus scheme are also over. The latter not only cost us a future captain but also the Scottish Beckenbauer.

He also at the request of the manager, and possibly the Board, disciplines players and staff, that’s why we’ll never see AS in the hoops again.

It was also he who let Thommo go when his antics were causing the club some grief.

He did eff up with Bobo, but then again he chose to sit in the stand rather than play elsewhere. That was his prerogative.

However, when WGS needed a central defender PL relented and Bobo played, we did get a clean sheet that day but also got away with a potential penalty when the big mhan handled the ball on the MITB’s blind side.

He was heavily involved with “moneyball” and is seen as a tough negotiator, however, with a new strategy in place of revamping Lennoxtown and rearing our own he was instrumental in the hiring of RD, but not without Board approval.

Ronny was seen as the man with the best pedigree for bringing our promising youth through, a youth who are now looking the part.

NFL was requested to assist Ronny in this programme, he didnae want tae know and took umbrage at big Dolph being let go, which is quite ironic as the big mhan is no longer at Bolton, and is now with a club destined for Division 1 and probably the bums rush. Who knows what might have happened should he have chosen to stay, could have been given the coveted Director of Football role.

If it is perceived that Ronny isnae panning out then he will replace him with another like candidate. The “moneyball” and throwing money about like a man with no arms are over, for now anyway.

As I see it Ronny is still wrong the sensible answer on Friday night was for him to say he did not see the penalty incident clearly and that he would wait to comment until he had viewed the footage before making comment. However Ronny in my opinion likes the glare of the camera and talks to much at times and it is never a challenge to the question always giving the interviewer some sort of story and in our wee bigoted country they love to twist any story about the hoops.H.H.

  5. Eddieinkirkmichael at 5.23pm, superb post, elucidates exactly what I was trying to formulate myself. Everybody should read it, print it out, stick it on the wall and revisit it daily. Good stuff.

I could be wrong, doubt it mind you, but I do recall Hooper getting the mearest of touches first before he got wiped out :-)

I don’t see how Ronny threw Boyata under the bus (that’s the one and only time I use that stupid term btw). Did he blame him for not winning the game? No. He said we defended well with ten men. He also spoke about the penalty miss and the one-on-one, as any manager would have done.

There is a big difference between being honest and being naive to the point where it’s bordering on negligence.

    ========

I’d say accepting that it is wrong to be honest is bordering on subservience to an oppressive culture. The problem is we are so used to it we think it’s the norm and honesty isn’t.

Saying it’s negligence simply encourages or surrenders to the oppressive culture in my opinion and I’m surprised you accept this.

  10. TOM Rogic has put the record straight following a newspaper report claimed he was set to reject a new contract with Celtic and could be on his way out of the club.

Speaking to the official Celtic website, the Australian internationalist said: “I know there was a story today suggesting that I want to leave Celtic. This is simply not the case at all.

“I am really enjoying my time at Celtic and I am proud to be part of such a great football club.

“I want to extend my contract with Celtic. I am speaking to the Club just now and hopefully this will be agreed very soon.”

Rogic has returned to the Celtic squad this season following a lengthy injury lay-off, and the 23-year-old has been in impressive form, scoring seven goals so far in the campaign.

Whether Ronny is a good, bad or indifferent manager is of secondary importance in the scheme of things.

As long as supporters the length and breadth of the country continue to financially support the corrupt SFA and SPFL, then who wins what is a sham and an exercise in self delusion and ostrich impersonations.

Time for all you football activists and Rent-A -Cause guys to get proactive and creative to save the game our fathers, grandfathers and us aul’ hands have given you.

As it stands, football fans are throwing the game under the bus, to quote an overused and corny cliché.

Passed lauders bar at the weekend and saw their window display of the flags of the teams competing in the six nations.

Would have been quite impressive if it not been missing the flag of one of the countries.

No prizes for guessing which one.

I can only assume that it is impossible to obtain an Irish flag in the Glasgow area.

I’m not suggesting RD be dishonest. Just because he know’s something to be true doesn’t mean he should declare it to the Media. Protecting your players in public is one of the most fundamental aspects of professional football management. Doing the complete opposite is naive in my opinion.

Negligence (def) – is a failure to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances. The area of tort law known as negligence involves harm caused by carelessness.

clogher celt on 29th February 2016 5:51 pm – I reposted SFTB’s post as I broadly agree on most(not all) of the points he raises.

  17. Looks to me that Ronny has been instructed from above to appeal Boyatas red card solely to appease an already disgruntled support. In his original interview Ronny states that he had watched the tackle and it was an ok decision don’t see what else had him have a change of mind. Me personally I thought at the time that Boyatas tackle had a bigger influence on the progress of the Hamilton player than it had on the ball. Watched it a few times with the benefit of frame by frame slow motion replay and to me Boyatas right knee connects withe the left knee of the Hamilton player putting him off balance before his right foot inconclusively connects with the ball.

  18. WAberdeen haven’t improved this season.Celtic have gotten worse.

Just check the points that Aberdeen have accumulated against the other SPL sides.

They have picked up less points against them.

Found it, just before 3 mins in and it has a slow mo, Hooper defo touches the ball first, then he gets wiped out.

A pen all day long, none of the pish that they reached the right decision, they didn’t, they then lied and the cover up started cos they cheated and we got the blame.

And some folks want us to stay silent, bollix, we should be shouting from the rooftops.

Mr Stein said we should stick the ball in the net more times than the opo to negate the referees, sorry Mr Stein, it’s 2016 and we are still saying the same, it’s supposed to be sport, it’s not sport in scotland when Celtic are involved, the sad thing is we are accepting it.

I agree with most of your post, bar this bit…

The “moneyball” and throwing money about like a man with no arms are over, for now anyway.

We have squandered millions of late by going for the unproven cheap option.

Our pool of players is far too big and many are picking up good money whilst sitting on their erchies with no chance of contributing.

Clear them out and buy what we need, if that means going over our wage barrier…so be it..better two good ones than six non-starters.

If players grumble about the wage differential…prove it on the park what they are worth.
