Act before talk of shaming the club

1133

“I said to the players at half time that we were shaming the club at the moment and they had to go out and show some pride in the shirt”, the words of Neil Lennon to the BBC after the game on Saturday.

Pride in the shirt is a requirement any manager should ask of his team, and it is notable that the subsequent goal-scorers both have strong connections to the club, but it probably had little to do with the second half performance from Anthony Stokes, Charlie Mulgrew and our the impressive James Forrest.  Calls to pride are limited in what they can achieve, genuine talent is far more effective.

At the AGM on Friday and again in his post-match comments on Saturday, Neil alluded to the fragility of his own position.  Had the game finished 3-0 to Kilmarnock I think he would have walked away.  This would have been a great pity.

Neil is learning on the job. He was not gifted the benefits of experience without actually having to work through difficult times as a manager.  Before his thoughts turn to his own position, before our season is too far gone to save, he should recruit an experienced assistant.  Someone who knows the challenges of working with a disparate group of players, who can deal with the challenges of a demanding board and supporter base.

The need for a mentor was evident 18 months ago and is screamingly so now.  For the sake of Celtic, do the necessary.

You sound surprised at the post.

I would also be surprised at that, were it not for the guy’s previous.

Never yet seen anything positive written by him about ANYTHING Celtic-related.

Keeps helluva quiet when things are going well, then when things are going badly or even TOO well,he pops up to start a fight in an empty house.

  4. If Neil needs a mentor then it needs to be someone with long experience in the game; comfortable dealing with media; has business brain that can match any influence from Peter Lawell and if he is known to have a Celtic background all the better.

You think it’s the business model that has failed to beat St Johnstone and Kilmarnock? I believe we started with 7 internationalists on Saturday. Perhaps we can only beat these teams if we field 11 internationalists? The players are under-performing, individually and as a team. That means the manager is under-performing too. I blame the board for a lot of things, but even if we don”t have the players for European competition they should easily be good enough to beat SPL fodder.

Anyone who bought shares on day one, and then again when Fergus left is down a lot more, on a pro-rata basis, but then John Reid would tell us we don’t matter as much as the owner.

Strange as this may sound, I don’t refer to them as huns cos they are just supporters. I have friends and work colleagues who support Rangers. I have great debates every day with them but it is done in a professional manner. I look at the crowds at Rangers games and know that some of my pals and colleagues are in there and I know them well enough to like them so why should I be derogatory to them?

We have debates about football, religion, youth set ups etc and it is good debating. They wouldn’t call me a Fenian and I wouldn’t call them a hun. Yes, there is banter but that is all it is – banter.

Davie Hay as a sounding board for Neil and Steve Walford back to coach the defence might be a couple of additions worth making.

  19. Hi Paul (and all)

Not surprising to see most people latching on to the “mentor” suggestion.

However, there is another phrase used in the article which,in my opinion, goes to the heart of the concerns of many Celtic supporters.

That is ” Neil is learning on the job”.

Like most others,I dearly hope that NL is a successful Celtic manager and recognise that,as a “rookie” he is bound to make mistakes. All of the great managers made them including Jock.

For me,however, one of the factors which differentiates between potentially great mangers or promising managers is their ability to learn from their mistakes. See Jock,Shankly,Ferguson eg

I am concerned that Neil is repeating the same mistake on too many occasions (eg zonal marking,442 with two small wide players away from home, persevering with guys who consistently let him down)

I sense a strong feeling of frustration from many Celtic supporters at what they perceive as stubbornness and a failure to change things which need changing and changing things which don’t.

It may be that a wise old head can help him with this issue.

I sincerely hope so for Celtic’s sake and for a thoroughly decent guy who deserves better after all he has been put through

  23. UEFA outline scenarios for Sion’s possible Europa League re-integration

Celtic’s place in European competition assured by governing body.

UEFA have announced several possible scenarios allowing Sion to compete in this year’s Europa League, should the Swiss club win their case at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Sion were ejected from the competition for fielding ineligible players, with Celtic assuming their place. The Swiss club, led by controversial president Christian Constantin, have launched a legal battle to be reinstated and have won several ruling in the Swiss courts but have yet to present their argument to CAS.

Should they win, UEFA have said they will engineer Sion’s re-entry. None of the scenarios announced would involve Celtic losing their place but could require extra games for the Scottish side.

A statement on UEFA’s website explained the options:

“The first option assumes the cancellation of all previous games in Group I of the UEFA Europa League, and for a set of new games to be played within a group of five, following the rules of the former UEFA Cup group stage with teams playing against each other either at home or away. These matches could then be played between 24 November and 22 December.

“The second option allows for the integration of FC Sion into Group I as an additional fifth team, but that the results and points of the games already played in the group remain. Eight additional matches would have to be played, starting at the end of November and finishing in February 2012.

“The other options, mainly valid in the case of a late reintegration, assume that FC Sion could be integrated directly into the round of 32, following a qualifying play-off round still to be defined.”

The governing body stated that matters such as club co-efficient, rankings and income had all been evaluated to ensure minimal impact if necessary. However, it stressed that any plan did not have to be put into place immediately, allowing CAS time to make a decision.

  24. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

If Sion get back in to the EL does that mean our 3-0 home and away victories against them will be null and void?
