Act before talk of shaming the club

1133

“I said to the players at half time that we were shaming the club at the moment and they had to go out and show some pride in the shirt”, the words of Neil Lennon to the BBC after the game on Saturday.

Pride in the shirt is a requirement any manager should ask of his team, and it is notable that the subsequent goal-scorers both have strong connections to the club, but it probably had little to do with the second half performance from Anthony Stokes, Charlie Mulgrew and our the impressive James Forrest.  Calls to pride are limited in what they can achieve, genuine talent is far more effective.

At the AGM on Friday and again in his post-match comments on Saturday, Neil alluded to the fragility of his own position.  Had the game finished 3-0 to Kilmarnock I think he would have walked away.  This would have been a great pity.

Neil is learning on the job. He was not gifted the benefits of experience without actually having to work through difficult times as a manager.  Before his thoughts turn to his own position, before our season is too far gone to save, he should recruit an experienced assistant.  Someone who knows the challenges of working with a disparate group of players, who can deal with the challenges of a demanding board and supporter base.

The need for a mentor was evident 18 months ago and is screamingly so now.  For the sake of Celtic, do the necessary.

So what are Lennon’s credentials that you think he is a good Celtic manager?

Scottish Cup win, unlucky in League (Hamilton game seems to spring to mind). Kayal, Izzagurre, Hooper, Wanyama and Forrest. But he is a great manager as he made peepil like you smell fear, broke the SFA and is going to be in charge when the huns are no more.

  2. For anyone minded like the poster earlier (lionroars?) wondering about Video Review Panel action against elbows, or indeed against the Killie player who did for Hooper I emailed DB @ the SFA stating “I am curious to know if either of the following challenges have been / are to be reviewed by the above panel? …”

I also asked “Do the SFA publish a list of incidents considered by the above panel on a weekly basis and if so could you provide a link? A link to any guidance on how incidents are decided upon (e.g. is supporter feedback (such as this email) considered, is it based on media reports or are all games reviewed in full?) would also be gratefully received.”

    The reply:

“No complaints with requisite evidence have been forwarded. D”

  4. Paul67,

I have to agree with some other posters on here. The “mentor” argument seems to just be a nice way of saying our manager isn’t up to the job he’s been hired to do. If the mentor doesn’t have final say on team selection and tactics, then Neil Lennon can just ignore the advice. If the mentor has final say on the team and tactics then he’s effectively the new manager and Neil Lennon has been relieved of his duties.

I’m of the opinion that we need a new manager. Let’s be honest with ourselves, if the results and performances we’ve had this season had happened under Brady, Barnes or Mowbray then everyone would agree it was time for a change. The Board need to have the balls to admit they’ve made (yet another) bad choice and need to resolve it openly and honestly, by appointing a new manager, not by a back door “mentor” route.

You’re right – I smell fear, fear that Rangers are going to do 4 in a row. Fear that at the end of this season we are going to be searching for another manager with a team full of disgruntled and couldn’t care players and yet another team building process begins.

I accept the above signings are good, I also accept that some have been poor but you will get that with any manager. What I don’t see enough is the managing, the motivation, the tactical awareness that makes up a good manager.

Regarding the Huns no more, there will always be a Rangers, whether in its current incarnation or in some other guise – if you are happy to watch a team losing the league year after year in the hope that our rivals go under, then you really need to wake up and smell the coffee.

  10. Neil Lennon proved last season that he had what it takes to be the Celtic manager, winning the cup, bettering Smith over 7 derby matches, and picking up enough points to win us the league in any season since we lost the league on black sunday. He turned average players into better players.

Beram Kayal proved last season that he had what it takes to be the new Celtic captain. He is a young man, far from his home and family, who has had a number of injuries. But when he is fit, and in form, he is a helluva player, ditto Ki, Hooper and Commons.

Last season we sang their praises, yet now we are dusting down the farewell speeches for when they depart the club.

Neil watched a number of players last season, and seemed to have identified areas for strengthening, is it his fault that they haven’t been ? He can only work with the players at his disposal, if they are not good enough, ultimately he will not be good enough, and we will change our manager again, and buy and sell more players.

It is obvious that all is not well at the club, but it appears that those who have performed for us in the past are given short shrift when things go wrong, yet those who have failed again, and again, are allowed to continue making their mistakes.

Anyone who suggest Jim Jeffries should be Lennies mentor has got to be a hun. What Celtic supporter in his right mind would want that bitter wee fud anywhere near our club ? Never mind telling Lenny what to do.

Apart from the fact he’s a bitter wee nyaff who didn’t even speak out against the attack on our manager when he was standing feet away from him, he’s also a crap over rated dud of a manager who is only lauded in the Scottish media because he’s one of the brotherhood.

Sorry mate I can’t agree. Why do we owe Neil? I just dont get this at all.

I just don’t buy into this religion stuff as reason to support Neil’s tenure as manager. He has made a hefty sum of CFC while we the fans have spent a hefty – for what? I do not wish to sacrifice the league this year for some myth of a cause which is frankly intangible to me.

Perspective is lost over this NL stuff. If you want to see real sacrifice check out the guys in Libya or Syria who have are fighting for free in the hope of freedom for their country – many have lost their lifes. They are owed a debt. NL has done nothing by comparison. What happened last season was unsavoury for sure but in the perspective of the world conflicts it is nano.

Great post, Dont think myself that Neil needs a minder, however he does need more CELTIC men in the middle of the park Johnie Doyle type who wouldnt hide, could do a lot worse than stick Mark Wilson at centre back, ( I think he played there against Hearts ) the defence is to exposed due to poor positioning of midfielders no leader in there when lesser opponents are in there face, could do a lot worse than bring back Darren O Dea in Jan, and see Stephen Pearson is being released in Jan by Derby he could do a Robson. as not Neil must know by now who wants to play for him and CELTIC, Kayal was an absolute disgrace at Killie and if he is working his ticket show him the door, not the same player as last season, hope Neil turns it round. Correct. It’s fairly clear that we have no chance of the 2011-12 title unless something changes. Without a trace of sentiment I’d say Neil Lennon must stay. He’s a smart bhoy and will only get better. But right now he and his backroom staff share a lack of experience – and it shows. He needs an assistant. I don’t believe he has one.
