Adrenaline dip, reds, wanton ruffling

1215

Cast your mind back to earlier this month.  February ended with a 100% domestic record, qualification for the League Cup Final and two merit awards for performances against Inter Milan.  We then walloped nearest challengers Aberdeen 4-0.  A small matter of a game against St Johnstone lay ahead before the Scottish and League Cup double-header against Dundee United.  Which we lost.  At home.

If a team drops even a few percentage points below its optimum the actual drop in results achieved can be enormous.  Celtic have answered all the big questions over the last seven weeks, despite the reversal in Milan; there will inevitably be a drop in adrenaline when normality returns, which is tomorrow, again against United.

We have a month to prepare for the Scottish Cup semi-final but another St Johnstone-type episode would cut the gap at the top to zero points, with Celtic having one game in hand.

I’m a great believer than a manager cannot and should not ask his players to climb the mountain every time.  If he does, he loses that special intensity he’ll need for the truly big occasions.  The players, from captain to novice, must carry the burden.

Niggles between players happen in every game.  On most occasions it will be a couple of months before you face the same opponent again, so whatever happened last time will have been replaced in the mind’s gallery of items the player feels sore about.

Since Scottish football became the Celtic-Dundee United show that’s changed.  A player who elbowed you last game will be running at you next time out.  This is the stuff red cards are made of.

There is a chance that we’ve beaten United into submission and that they’ll turn up in body, not mind, tomorrow, but if Jackie McNamara manages to convince them they are victims of wanton Celtic player’s face-on-United player’s elbow action, you can expect more reds.

Keep your cool, Celtic.  Nothing more than wanton hair ruffling.

    Like No Other

Another tip from the University of Life.

In the main I always carry my passport and a paper and pencil in the unlikely event of impending arrest at the hands of overzealous rozzers.

Now to be fair, most policemen and women conduct themselves in a proper and dignified fashion, however there have been occasions when the orders from those behind the desks have been questionable and on other occasions when individuals with a uniform just go way over the score.

So – there is always no harm in being able to prove who you are with a passport – the legality of which is that Ra Queen bestowes upon the bearer of same a privelege of protection in the name of her majesty’s government.

    The pen and paper etc?

Have you ever seen the face of an approaching copper who might just be out to cause you trouble when you start the conversation, pen and paper in hand, with the words:

” Hello officer, before we start can I have your name, badge number, length of experience and the name of your immediate commanding officer, Thanks?”

Other than that I use it to write down the shopping!

It’s a mystery how I’ve survived all these years in ignorance of these lifesaving tips. I feel this could be a life changing moment. Thank you for these pearls of wisdom.

More to the point, after all the crap we’ve endured from that utd mob about unfair decisions etc, why was there no mention of that challenge.? Doesnt matter about last defender, that was a sending off anywhere on the pitch. Given the fact it was the first minute I’d call that a match changing decision, not the crap theyve been harping on about with Efe, when we were already one up ! Anyway, off to the game, enjoy today everyone

  3. Greetings everyone from Kata Beach Phuket. 90 degrees at 7.30 pm not comfortable and sadly I have sought out a bar showing Man City v WBA. Am continuing to stay away from the bar girls, the lady boys and the guy who keeps trying to sell me a made to measure suit for £80. Am I the only person who would like to see Boerrigter gradually being brought back into the team like Forrest ?I still think he’s a player.

Billybhoy and twenty first of may,

United have had their fair share of favourable decisions in our last two games at Tannadice and in the two cup games since.

Dillon brought down Guidetti the same way Broonie did with Dow, no penalty given. That was in the same game Scepovic had the goal disallowed.

Ciftci’s & Butcher’s role in the game’s major incident and the penalty. Connolly also tried to dive for a penalty when Broonie made an excellent tackle on him in our penalty area.

Last week McGowan’s behaviour towards the match officials and our players during the was ridiculous.

On wednesday they avoided two red cards for the goalie’s lunge on Leigh and Paton leading with his elbow on Stokesy.

Quite a few wrong decisions made in their favour or am I biased like officials are for us.

Great picture in E Tims twitter of McGowan and Paton trying to manipulate the ref to get Virgil sent off in the first of the cup games.

    I’m away to the game.

Let’s get our job done today.

  8. Two stone wall penalties knocked back by the ref.Dundee battling well.Aberdeen looking the better team, overall, but not over yet.

I think Bobby Carol signed from Irvine Meadow (or Vics) and was hailed as a wonderful signing in late 50s.

He was good at cutting in from the wing and shooting at goal with some success but he never scaled the heights.

The story goes that he stepped up to take a corner against Airdrie at their ground when a black pudding was flung in Bobby ‘s direction accompanied by the shout

” that’s two puddings on the park now”

but that may be one of those tales where different Celtic players at different times took the corner.

His laddie was a good player at amateur level where I saw him play in same team as my lad.

I think i dissed the wrong person there , i just checked wiki

and seen that Bobby’s record with Celtic was very respectable

and he scored the first ever goals for Celtic in Europe.

*Bobby Carroll was one of my favourite players as a lad. He won a Junior Cup Medal and was also voted Junior Player of the Year. He scored 75 goals in the season he won both, as a right winger tae.

He was one of the unfortunate ones that played during the years in the wilderness (57-65).

  18. Bobby Carroll.

    Was at Celtic 1957-63.

According to the Celtic Biography he played 78 games and scored 27 goals.

I must have seen him play a few times between ’62 and ’63 but unfortunately I have little or no recollection.

Bit unfair on Muggleton. We have had worse keepers…….a lot worse

*absolutely, he played out here in the Hamilton tournament and won it for us by saving 2 penalties in a shoot out with the jambos.

That was the event when I saw all the squad singing the Celtic Song except the current arabs assistant manager.
