Adrian Sproat and shutout records

767

An article on STV this week brought an old memory to mind.  Days before Rangers’ goalkeeper, Chris Woods, was set to break a Scottish shut-out record across all competitions he gave a media interview when he said, “I just hope when we do lose a goal it is not an important one”.

Woods duly broke the record in a Scottish Cup tie against Hamilton Accies but that game, 27 years ago last week, is not remembered for the achievements of Chris Woods, it’s remembered for the fact that Accies left back, Adrian Sproat, found himself in nosebleed territory as he thrashed the only goal of the game into the net.  Records count for nothing when you’re knocked out of the cup.

Fraser Forster has demonstrated remarkable concentration in recent games, when he has been called upon to make incredible saves after long periods of inactivity, but there are only so many times he’ll be able to pull off ‘save of the season’ acrobatics.  We need to protect him and close down space well away from the Celtic goal.

These records may matter little if they are recalled through an embarrassing defeat but, just consider how often and fondly we refer to the 25 league game winning run in season 2003-04.  History is always worth making.

Many thanks for everyone who for getting your seats confirmed for our CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on 14 March.  As we stand there are a few non-confirmed but from tomorrow we’ll be able to allocate seats to the waiting list.  Will let you know if we have space available soon.

The dinner is to raise funds to build a kitchen for Mary’s Meals at the Kholoni Primary School in Mchinji, Malawi, which has 1200 students and no catering facilities.  Children often are faced with the choice of working to eat of going to school.  With a kitchen in place this dependency will flip, those who go to school and get an education, will also get a meal – often their only reliable meal of the day.

Marys’ Meals perform minor miracles, feeding each child in Malawi for £7 per annum, while employing locals to work in the kitchens (which will be used as a classroom outside of meal times).  It will be a remarkable legacy to mark the first 10 years we’ve had out of CQN.

Two new badges will launch at the CQteN dinner to record the decade and raise funds for the Malawi kitchen.  The designs have now been approved (see here) and they are about to go into production.  If you would like to register interest, email Celticrollercoaster on cqnbadges@gmail.com

Ally McCoist has quipped he would have bet on Ibrox not being chosen by the SPFL as the venue for the 2014 Scottish League Cup final.

Celtic Park will host the fixture on March 16, with Aberdeen taking on Inverness Caledonian Thistle for the trophy.

Asked if he was surprised his club’s ground had been overlooked for the occasion, McCoist replied: “Not surprised at all.

“I did say to the chief executive that if we were allowed to bet, which of course we are not, get a few quid on the cup final not being at Ibrox.

“I just didn’t think it would be. It was my own opinion.

“I think obviously Neil [Doncaster], or indeed whoever is running the SPFL, made the decision and they’ll stick by it.”

In an interview with STV on Wednesday, SPFL chief executive Doncaster said Ibrox couldn’t be used because it was likely a live game would be played at the ground the day before, causing logistical problems for television companies.

McCoist refuted that suggestion, saying: “I’ve worked with television long enough that I know these boys are unbelievable at their job in terms of de-rigging and setting up for games.

“Come on. That doesn’t wash with me and I don’t think it washes with you either.”

Is Swally implying that Neil Lennon runs the SPFL?

Sevco could not hold the League Cup final because they have a game the previous day at their ground. It’s a pretty safe bet!

Phil is first of all a journalist and puts out stories as they develop.

I think at the point the Wallace walking story came out it was very definitely a strong possibility and was it not couched in those terms.

It is also possible that it was a “my way or the highway” ploy that Wallace is using to get his way. Used that tactic myself now I remember (I won).

So if it is developing that Wallace is not going, that is not backtracking but reporting the current state of play.

Predictions are so unpredictable. That is what makes them predictions.

On the other one about running out of money: all the visible signs are there but, without any evidence at all to support my suspicion I think money is being fed in from not so reputable sources because that is the nature of the beast.

  13. FFin’ conHundrum:

    “Rangers, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Hearts

All “Huns” supposedly. We are always told that term is a “cheeky” name for Rangers but how come the other clubs get the same shouted at them?

Would it be that “sectarianism” only means Rangers fans doing wrong?”

    ——

“The main point with regards to the law is

If someone calls you a HUN and you are offended by this

then it is deemed a criminal act ( Sectarian )”

    ——

“All clubs who have had well documented financial issues whilst not in all cases having the worst bank statements. Also clubs who have never had dodgy land deals passed by their respective councils.

Any link to protestantism – however small – leaves you alienated from the powers that be.”

    ——

“The cops say it’s not sectarian if the word is used on it’s own,but in the context of how it’s used is a different matter,So according to the cops calling someone a hun is absolutely fine,But calling someone a hun b*st*rd becomes sectarian/offensive.”

[That’s unfortunate…..I liked that kind of combo.]

    Thanks again for your response.

Largely I agree with many of the sentiments which you’ve expressed. Currently, there is a division within some of the support and a priority must be to at least attempt to establish some sort of cohesive body which would then be in a position to have dialogue with Celtic.

I’m concerned however at the use of the word ‘control’ in one of the club’s responses last night. It was used in the same sentence as ‘communication’ (and another word which escapes me!) but both of which would suggest that the club were keen to give the perception that effective dialogue was taking place. The reply claimed that ‘communication’ had broken down when the club no longer had ‘control’. Now, for me, you’re never going to be in a position to have meaningful dialogue when one side is in actual fact attempting to control the other side.

As much as an understanding between supporters needs to be fostered to ensure that the feelings of the ‘millions’ are accurately represented, it is imperative that an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding also exists between the supporter’s representatives and the club itself.

An absolutely predictable effort from Sleekit McCoist to deflect from the real issues at Ibroke, an unpaid tax bill and impending administration.

No surprise that Father Dougal Graham has fallen for it though.

Useful idiots are great in these situations, but administration looms large and no amount of spin from Sleekit will prevent it.

Not sure why he’s so concerned about the Scottish Cup final venue though, as Sevco will not be anywhere near it.
