Ajax, Strachan and Rodgers

150

As Ajax contemplate the impossible (winning the Champions League the season after being knocked out of the Europa qualifiers by Rosenborg), it’s appropriate to note the stark European facts of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure.

Excluding qualifiers, Brendan’s Celtic played 6 home games in the Champions League and 5 in the Europa, he won three, all in the Europa, drew 1 and lost 7.

Gordon Strachan also played 11 home games excluding qualifiers, all in the Champions League, 2 in the knock out rounds.  Gordon won 7 of those games, drew 3 and lost only 1, a 2-3 defeat to Barcelona.  Among others, the wins came against reigning champions, Milan, as well as Manchester United, Villarreal and Benfica (twice).

While Gordon Strachan’s Celtic never came close to what Ajax have achieved this season, they were eye-wateringly good compared to our recent seasons in Europe.  And for what it’s worth, I don’t think Periier Doumbe, McManus, Naylor, Hartley, Donati or Jarosik, players Gordon started in that win against Milan, would get near this Celtic team.

It is possible to do much better in Europe with our existing resources.  We will always love what was achieved under Brendan, but his stubbornness in Europe is irrefutable.

And a big thanks to Kevin (brother) for throwing this comparison at me after the Valencia defeats.

  1. Son misses first leg of semi final, ridiculous, bookings should get wiped out at SF stage, the more games you play the more chance of getting a card ffs

  2. Because of the money aspect, I am not particularly enamoured of Champions league Football but Ajax V Spurs and Barcelona V Liverpool both promise much.

    `night all.

Yes. There is something not quite right when one player`s yellow means he misses a mid-table , meaningless game and another misses a Champions league semi-final or, even worse, Final.

    Definite goodnight now.

  5. Looks like a return to attacking football in CL semi final line up.

Hope Ajax meet Barca in final as a tribute to Johan Cruyf. I am just a dreamer but nothing wrong with that.

  6. Looks like I picked the wrong night to go TV-Football-Free. Only 3 more sleeps till I cheer on Hearts and 4 till we might just win the league.

    Sleep well my fellow Timmites;-)

  7. All yellow cards accrued by those teams still in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League have expired ahead of the semi-finals.

As of the start of 2014/15, yellow cards accumulated in UEFA club competitions from the beginning of the group stage are wiped out upon completion of the quarter-finals. That means all players left in the competition now have a clean slate, with the exception of those that incurred a suspension in the quarter-final second legs and will miss the semi-final first legs .

  8. 29 arrests from a 300 person demonstration in Edinburgh. Nae summit ‘cause they’re posh, or studenty

  9. Pep has won 2 champions leagues in ten years with the Barcelona of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, Bayern Munich and now City. He’s not been in a final since 2011. Is that not just choking? It felt like it tonight, against a spurs team without their best player and half a team at walking pace at the end

If he doesn’t win the league this season that’ll be one league in three years in the EPL.

  10. Of course, a simple way to avoid yellow cards is not to commit prescribed offences. Heck, just do away with the Laws of the Game altogether.

Very enjoyable match at Manchescity regardless. Big Vic played well I thought, considering he has not had much game time recently.

  11. TONTINE TIM @ 6:18 PM,

Revisionism is all well and good but the fact is WGS, Lenny and Brendan have very similar records in Europe.

Why do you think the leader only counts home games and discards qualifiers? Bit of cherry picking wouldn’t you say.

Let’s forget about Scotland’s invincibles drawing with England’s invincibles. Let’s forget about Artmedia Bratislava, let’s forget about Barca 6 – 1 Celtic.

Let’s forget Ronny’s European record and Tony Mowbray’s European record – after all who hired them?

The fact is the European results since MO’N has been pretty poor.

Trying to paper over that fact by highlighting Gordon’s impressive European home record just cons the gullibles.

The last Manager before PLs time was MO’N. The last Manager backed was MO’N. Well apart from last season’s.

    Hail Hail

  12. Man City still would have come up short with their quadruple……

Celtic competed in five tournaments in the 1966–67 season. They won all five competitions and completed the Quintuple.

Over the course of the season, Celtic scored a world record 196 goals in the major competitions they took part in.

  15. WHAT IS THE STARS @ 11:13 PM,

Personally I’d like to see him promoted to Chairman.

Still, if he did leave the CEO position who would you replace him with?

I’d go Edwin Van der Sar… does ok at Ajax, made less than half a million euros last year and although could be in for a whopping bonus this year should still be affordable.

Couple of things: Jock Stein did look for pastures New in 1972 when Pat Crerand brokered talks with Man U.

*Sir Bob passed away in 1971 and guess who took over, he finally forced Jock out 7 years later and it could have been earlier but for that car crash.

The really indisputable fact is that the 3 times we achieved our CL high water mark of last 16 we were managed by WGS (2x) and NFL. I would say that CL q-finalist is as great an achievement as winning the EL (for evidence see Seville’s record in both comps) and that CL last 16 is equivalent to being a losing EL finalist because you have to get past a CL 2nd or 1st seed to do this.

MON tried really hard but he never achieved this high water mark and he had Larsson, Sutton, Hartson and Petrov (plus Balde, McNamara and Agathe)- all players who exited sharp-ish in the wake of MON’s departure.

There is revisionism and cherry picking in your lack of acknowledgement of these achievements

  20. STfBs @ 12:51 AM,

CL after Christmas is indeed the high water mark.

WGS did very well to get there, Celtic Park was a fortress in Europe in the noughties.

WGS had a squad of less than 30 all first team players many internationalists.

I don’t think it is co-incidental that we did better in Europe before “moneyball”.

My point though was this, if you are going to compare records between managers then that’s what you do, of course it can be subjective and in that case you do a bit of analysis with it that fholk could look at and agree or disagree (as on your Europa League conjecture).

It seems to me the leader wanted to compare BRs record and make it seem poor. So had a conclusion and searched, mainly in vain, for a comparison that could do that.

So out of the previous four managers, the most positive aspect of the best record was looked at, then a totally skewed nonsense comparison was made.

The fact is Gordon lost all of his away matches in Europe save the draw at Spartak Moscow.

BRs away record in Europe is much better than Gordon’s, That’s neither here nor there but if you are going to compare records at least do it fairly.

  21. 2 months ago I was told by a well connected and very wealthy Rangers man that David Murray was investing in Rangers again.

This man lost 10’s of thousands when the old club went down.

He is bitter about it ,and say’s “ King hasn’t got any more money to put into Rangers.”

He told me to watch out for Murray coming back.

    Approaching his mid 70’s now.

He is one of the few that say’s it’s a new club.

He still invests in a corporate box ,but feels he was sold down the river.

  22. You’d imagine that Minty Murray would have a lifetime ban for anything remotely to do with football or any other sport. Does he still sponsor the rugby? In fact in my humble opinion he should be behind bars for the £millions he “borrowed” from the BoS.

    ……………………………………

With Respect TEUCHTER AR LA, You have Missed Celtic’s other trophy that unforgettable season…….

There is an Old Matt McGinn Song/Record called ” The Bhoys from Lisbon”, which was available as a “Single”, which I had. It may be available to listen to on You Tube ?

In the Chorus, Matt sings about ” We’re the Bhoys who shook up Lisbon, we should Inter some of our tricks,

In the year of ’67…sure of TROPHY Number SIX (6).”

I posted a wee while ago about Celtic winning SIX Trophies that Year, and I even had Bertie Auld and Wullie O’Neill ( R.I.P), stumped when I asked the what was the ” 6th Trophy” that Celtic won…and leave aside “Quiz Ball” ?

The 6th Trophy was against Real Madrid in Di Stephano’s Testimonial, and wee Jinky and the Bhoys did a Lap of Honour with that Trophy IF I am correct. It was another Proud moment in Celtics History to Hammer real Madrid in their own pitch…1-o…Thanks to wee Jinky’s superb dribble by at least Two Real Madrid players, and slipping the Ball to The Buzzbomb….and wee Bobby truly slotted it away with a subline, cool finish.

Over the years, whenever I have asked Fold ” What was the 6th Trophy”…everybody says ” Quiz Ball” ? the Late, Great Matt McGinn certainly was NOT singing about “Quiz Ball”.
