Alarm bells ringing as qualifiers kick in

556

The most striking aspect of yesterday’s games came from Pittodrie and Tynecastle.  Aberdeen scored twice in second half stoppage time to secure a home win over Fola Esch from Luxembourg (good grief).  Hearts came from behind with the assistance of a penalty and an own goal to secure a narrow win over Estonians, Infonet.

Infonet finished fourth in the Estonian league last season, well below possible Celtic Champions League qualifier opponents, Flora, and will fancy their chances of knocking Hearts out.

None of this means that Aberdeen, Hearts of Celtic have an equal in Estonia or Luxembourg, but it’s a testament to how bizarre playing football before you have completed preseason is.  Even very well-run clubs like Southampton, who were humbled a year ago by Erik Sviatchenko and his Midtjylland pals, can find themselves out of Europe before they realise they are in a competition.

Celtic are likely to be playing the Estonian champions in 11 or 12 days.  If they overcome that they will face a vastly stiffer test in three weeks time.

Yesterday’s exercise in Slovenia will hopefully blow some cobwebs away but FC Flora are 17 games into their league season, that fact alone should give Brendan Rodgers plenty to consider.  Aberdeen’s toils in particular disturbed me.

Many thanks to all who contributed to the fantastic raffle competition yesterday, you’ve raised £375 already.  A reminder……

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

We have a £5-a-ticket raffle to win the chance to appear in your very own team photo, alongside the Celtic players and management at the preseason photocall for 2016-17.

You will then meet treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, who will give you a personal tour of Celtic Park.

Celtic will provide you with a strip, which you will retain, and you will receive your team photograph, framed and signed by the team, on a specially prepared mount.

Your donations go to Celtic FC Foundation, to support their work in Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty. The Foundation deliver often life-changing support and opportunities to children and adults in Scotland, Ireland, the rest of the UK and in many needy areas of the globe.

Buy your ticket at MyDonate here. You can enter as many times as you like, but only donations of £5 or higher will be entered into the raffle.

You.  The team.  The management.  Getting your squad photo taken.  And getting a strip!

You’ll have had worse days.

    Absolutely brilliant and totally deserved.

Portugal are nothing to be scared of, although Ramsey is a big miss.

Chris Coleman – great substitutions once again.

  5. Denayar had a very poor game.

    Was wrongside constantly..

It looks like he gained a few pounds and at this level his speed is not enough to compensate .

  6. A centre half with the stature of Ashley Williams…..would do just fine.

    Please Celtic

  7. Well done Wales, I know I am late on this, they just burst my coupon but what the hell. In case anyone asks why can’t Scotland do this, the answer is obvious.

They have a better crop of players, by a mile. Which Scottish player comes close to Williams as a defender, Ramsey in midfield and no point even talking about a Bale comparison. WGS is not the cause or the symptom, he has just being paid to polish a group of turds.

That wasn’t a dig at you btw!

Lineker said it and I just thought it was a bit obvious for someone who gets paid what he does.

  10. Spoke to my bro in Newport at half time and told him to get a spare oxygen tank for his Mrs who is oxygen dependant as Wales have this.

    Stunning Wales, simply stunning.

    Imagine being Huw Edwards tonight.

He is a proud Welsmnan and elated at the result but has to anchor a very solemn report on the terrible tragedy of the Battle of the Somme.

I doubt if I could have handled it so well.

    Huw, you have my admiration.

  12. Fantastic from Wales. Robson Kanu has probably just set his phone to block calls from Brendan and the contract will now be lost in that kitchen drawer we all have. You know the one, the one that is full of junk and phone chargers…

With downsizing of the squad and the savings on wages, I reckon our spending policy and wage barrier will be changing.

Some on here say it causes disharmony amongst other players, tough.

If you want to earn it, show it on the park.

There has been too many sitting on the bench and taking a more than healthy wage whilst hardly pulling the hoops on.

The signing of Dembele and the wage he will be on has shown this.

We obviously have to keep within our market but the less baggage means we can do it. HH

Ach if big John Harston has a greet, good on him. At least his team have made the semi finals. There was enough blubbering from some on here when their team qualified after finishing third in their group.

Well done the Welsh and thanks for giving us the chance again to hear the most stirring anthem at the Euros

Scotland are a self fulfilling prophecy.

The press and public would rather be glorious losers than have a proper based on merit structure in place.

The myopic disdain of home based players due to the mssm constantly playing down our leagues ability and their fawning over English based players even championship ones.

As this tournament has proved England is not the centre of the football universe despite the over inflated opinion by their media and populace.

There is some very good emerging talent in Scotland and if treated with a reasonable plan towards future success we will improve.

Unfortunately the self serving clowns in authority will be a huge barrier to a proper implemented strategy.
