Alarm bells ringing as qualifiers kick in

556

The most striking aspect of yesterday’s games came from Pittodrie and Tynecastle.  Aberdeen scored twice in second half stoppage time to secure a home win over Fola Esch from Luxembourg (good grief).  Hearts came from behind with the assistance of a penalty and an own goal to secure a narrow win over Estonians, Infonet.

Infonet finished fourth in the Estonian league last season, well below possible Celtic Champions League qualifier opponents, Flora, and will fancy their chances of knocking Hearts out.

None of this means that Aberdeen, Hearts of Celtic have an equal in Estonia or Luxembourg, but it’s a testament to how bizarre playing football before you have completed preseason is.  Even very well-run clubs like Southampton, who were humbled a year ago by Erik Sviatchenko and his Midtjylland pals, can find themselves out of Europe before they realise they are in a competition.

Celtic are likely to be playing the Estonian champions in 11 or 12 days.  If they overcome that they will face a vastly stiffer test in three weeks time.

Yesterday’s exercise in Slovenia will hopefully blow some cobwebs away but FC Flora are 17 games into their league season, that fact alone should give Brendan Rodgers plenty to consider.  Aberdeen’s toils in particular disturbed me.

Many thanks to all who contributed to the fantastic raffle competition yesterday, you’ve raised £375 already.  A reminder……

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

We have a £5-a-ticket raffle to win the chance to appear in your very own team photo, alongside the Celtic players and management at the preseason photocall for 2016-17.

You will then meet treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, who will give you a personal tour of Celtic Park.

Celtic will provide you with a strip, which you will retain, and you will receive your team photograph, framed and signed by the team, on a specially prepared mount.

Your donations go to Celtic FC Foundation, to support their work in Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty. The Foundation deliver often life-changing support and opportunities to children and adults in Scotland, Ireland, the rest of the UK and in many needy areas of the globe.

Buy your ticket at MyDonate here. You can enter as many times as you like, but only donations of £5 or higher will be entered into the raffle.

You.  The team.  The management.  Getting your squad photo taken.  And getting a strip!

You’ll have had worse days.

    Manufacturing Consent

Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media (1988), by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky, is an analysis of the drivers and distortions in news media. They posit that editorial distortion is aggravated by the news media’s dependence upon private and governmental news sources. If a given newspaper, television station, magazine, etc., incurs governmental disfavour, it is subtly excluded from access to information. Consequently, it loses readers or viewers, and ultimately, advertisers. To minimize such financial danger, news media businesses editorially distort their reporting to favour government and corporate policies in order to stay in business.

The dominant mass-media outlets are large firms which are run for profit. Therefore they must cater to the financial interest of their owners – often corporations or particular controlling investors. The size of the firms is a necessary consequence of the capital requirements for the technology to reach a mass audience.

Since the majority of the revenue of major media outlets derives from advertising, news media must therefore cater to the political prejudices and economic desires of their advertisers.

David Murray acquired Rangers when this important work was published. Ten years later he invited all the leading Scottish sports journalists to his home in Jersey. He was planning to put the lessons in this book into action. As soon as he issued side-letters, he crossed the line from tax avoidance (which will be contested in The Supreme Court in 2017) to tax evasion. No-one was paying attention, least of all the SFA. Murray had manufactured their consent. If you want to sell 1m copies on the back of an article on the signing of Maurice Johnston, you don’t ask questions in regard to David Murray riding a horse and carriage through the SFA’s articles of association.

From 1998-2009, Murray drip-fed medallions of succulent lamb to the red-top hacks. If he wanted a negative piece on CFC, they duly delivered. All Scottish sports press coverage was skewed by Murray.

King went to work on acquiring Rangers in 2012. He also had to manufacture consent. His first problem was to neutralise the effect of his 41 convictions for tax evasion. James Traynor, who had grown fat on a long term diet of succulent lamb, peddled the lie of a favourable result and how King’s funds had performed very well during their Mareva injunctions. King and Traynor were of course lying, but if anyone had the ‘audacity’ to write about their lies there was the distinct possibility of a future ban from press conferences at Auchenhowie or the ‘product placement‘ photo-shoots that are used to promote the Rangers box-office, on the pretext of a new signing or new initiative.

However King went much further to manufacture consent. The disturbance at the Hearts fixture was orchestrated by King. Those who acted on his orders, notably our ‘war poet‘ Craig Houston, were rewarded by invitations to drink from The Loving Cup and a youth academy in his organisation’s name, who I dismissively refer to as The Sons of Strewth.

King was the latter day author of The Charlotte Fakeovers material, which he acquired for £25,000. No-one in the media was prepared to touch it. Had he manufactured their consent? Did Paul Murray act as the middle man in this acquisition? At this juncture in time we cannot confirm this but there could be a causal link as the source of The Charlotte Fakeovers material was based in the Scottish Borders.

Having acquired this information, King and his allies then went about attacking Charles Green’s board and highlighting the links between Charles Green and Craig Whyte. King and his allies systematically drove the share price of RIFC, which peaked at 93p, to 18p, and then stepped in to acquire King’s 14.57% , and their equity, for a song. King is a past master at market manipulation. He was charged with numerous instances of it in South Africa. South Africa have a free press. The Scottish press is muted by their overriding desire to garner advertising revenue. I would argue that every editor in Scotland is aware of King’s artifice, but not one of them is prepared to go to print. Their consent apropos Rangers was manufactured in 1988.

  4. Thanks for that, Hen1rik.

I have always referred to the Manufacturing of Consent as the ‘financial imperative’ behind commercial news coverage.

I wonder if Chomsky et al. have ever published anything on why non-commercially driven news agencies, such as BBC Shortbread, can be so utterly biased … ?

Butchers, gym, supermarket, parents, cooking, vigil Mass, beer and football. Probably in that order, bookies being avoided as my tank is now empty again. Will wait for a semi final double bet later in week, only bets still alive are Christiano for top scorer and Gemany to win outright.
