All that was missing was the implied, “Celtic complete us”.

207

I always cringe when a prime minster meets the US President and that hoary old phrase, “the special relationship” is wheeled out.  It is a relationship without definition, no more or less unique than any other international relationship.  I doubt many US citizens are familiar with the term, to me, it feels that the UK is reaching to glow in the reflection of another’s elevated status.

You can therefore imagine my delight when I saw Ibrox livery on Sunday.  “Old Firm”, “This is the Old Firm”.  All that was missing was the implied, “Celtic complete us”.

Celtic fans campaign to stop using this term predates Oldco’s liquidation by many years.  As a guide, I never used it here (since 2004) nor did most others.  We knew then the association hurt the Celtic brand and that we needed to put as much clear blue water between us and them.  Celtic got onboard in 2012, when Oldco ceased, and Newco applied to join the SFA (as Sevco Scotland).

They were not alone, early match reports featured “The Rangers”, as news outlets struggled to square what happened with what others want to read.

What does it matter to me?  Not much.  If it was the other way around, I would absolutely claim Newco Celtic were in fact, just Celtic.  There is no point pretending otherwise (although I would be wrong).  If it was Celtic that liquidated in 2012, Rangers fans would never let the liquidation fact drop.  You would hear little else from them, it is the ultimate rivalry banter, why should they ignore it?

If it was Celtic that liquated in 2012, it would not matter to me what Rangers or their fans said about my club.  That relationship is a personal thing.  The facts are known, we are all free to interpret as we see fit, why should my world view be determined by how others regard what is now an historical event?

In prominently displaying the “Old Firm” livery, Newco were responding to 10 years of trolling by Celtic fans, handing them a victory they could scarcely believe when they saw it.  All the club managed to achieve is get everyone talking about why Celtic fans want no part of this phrase.  None of those reasons reflect well on the interests of Newco.

  1. I’m dying to know how that broken bottle got there. If it was a thrown at the goal and hit the crossbar, it’s a bloody good aim but also, if no-one was there at the time, why was it thrown?

  2. Think those figures are a tad optimistic An Dún but there is little doubt that winning this years League will be a seismic game changer,

I know we still have 6 games to play and we cannot be complacent but if we do the job, last Sunday will rank as one of our most important victories ever.

I think they’ll gamble again in the summer and spend (will lose quite a few). They’re capable in Europe and could well qualify for the champions league.

    ———–

I hear you and get what your saying.

But, in relation to them gambling?

Respectfully, we’ve seen the outcome of their gambling before.

…. and we’ve had to contend with prophesies of doom about the £80m CL bounty Sevco were about to scoop up.

… and their previous gambles were from a strong position with an upward trajectory.

Gambling failed to deliver (it often does)

We all saw them on the ground at full time.

    Busted flush stuff.

    As for their European pedigree?

    Europa League level?

    Genuinely commendable.

    At upper limit of expectations

    A much needed earner.

    Champions League level ?

    Nonexistent.

  4. Coneybhoy. Might have been thrown as Joe was walking out of the goals at half time.

Surely CCV must have captured the incident.

I think Police Scotland will have to get a result on the 2 bottle throwing incidents, this is far too serious to be swept under the carpet,

  5. Regarding Sevco’s finances, I’m wondering how many qualifiers do the SPFL runners-up have to play to get into the groups?

I think there’s a chance they’ll have yet another “final” throw of the dice to try to get to the groups that way.

  6. GEEBEE1978

I think it’s two rounds. Doable but non champions side. It would one helluva gamble to go all in on that.

  7. I get uncomfortable reading about CL earnings etc.

Let’s qualify first – start with 3 points on Saturday.

  8. It is from follow follow ,

but one witness posted sunday night described the bottle being papped from copland stand , hitting the crossbar with enough force and angle that shards were sent onwards into the penalty box,

this was after groundsman had walked away but before hart got there.

never believed i would be typing this, but FF had many many sane contributions on sunday highlighting the hooligan problems growing around the club, the worst of which are never confronted, well known that smuggling booze in is easy as stewards are volunteers, there to meet the numbers required for certificates to host an event, some of them being bad elements themselves.

fella across road from me, decent sort, a bluenose and his boy (who played for celtic btw) talked to him yesterday, might have been the dissapointment of defeat, but he said the bottle throwing and the bile, could be evidenced any game, but really bad vs celtic and in europe, the cokers at one end of the scale and the buckies at the other, he said fears only a matter of time till players get attacked as there are enough spread around who will do it, and again police precense is limited, preference is given to the volunteer stewards to handle things.

same fella told me, they dont use the toilets, dont go near them, its not a couple of drinkers its loads.

  9. Corkcelt,

    St Stivs,

“this was after groundsman had walked away but before hart got there”

I posted on this on Sunday – too lazy to go back and check exactly what I posted – but that ties in with what I saw on the TV.

Just 2 minutes or so before the restart there are two groundsmen working on the exact area JH identified as having glass on it. You can see them in the background on the live coverage from the studio just before they cut to the last ads before the restart.

it seems impossible to me that with such a short time frame to examine, blanket CCTV coverage cant identify who threw the thing.

Is there not one Rangers fan who is prepared – anonymously if need be – to identify who through those bottles or at least the seat they came from?

There must have been numerous witnesses close by.

Where’s all that dignity when you need it?

Hear Hear! Too many counting chickens already. Let’s get the points to finish them off first.

On another topic, I believe the following is true, but am happy to be corrected: the liquidation process for Airdrieonians FC took ( from memory ) 9 years until completion. Rangers are not liquidated yet, and the vultures are still picking at the carcass, extracting fees to the detriment of over 100 creditors, after a period of 10 years.

Since the MSM have taken a U-turn on the facts of the case, denying the truth, they will obviously be extremely reluctant to publish the factual conclusion of the administration process.

At some point, and one would expect, fairly imminently, Rangers will finally, formally, and officially be liquidated. I wonder if the MSM will have the gall to print that the previous ‘company’ are now liquidated, even if the facts scream otherwise? It will be fascinating to note how the denouement is worded.

  13. I see morellos has eaten his last pie for Sevco.

His legacy will be the same amount of goals scored in the derby in 5 years as Reo managed in 45 mins. One more than Boyd in his entire Sevco career

    THE LONG WAIT IS OVER

If ground level TV can pick out a numpty attempting to enter the field, pausing straddling the barrier, another taking him by the throat and pulling him back, all with perfect clarity, it seems a nonsense that other cameras can’t identify the buckfast swilling bottle tossers. Defies belief.

There were quite a few smoking too and the stench of weed was nauseating.

Indeed they are not yet liquidated. I am sure if we could dig around Uefa’s coefficient we would find 2 coefficients for “Rangers” and “The Rangers”. I checked about 4 years ago and the “Rangers” coefficient was still the 2nd best in Scotland approx double the amount “The Rangers”

I think you’ve over-estimated things a bit there. The TV pool is significantly smaller since the co-efficient payout came into effect.

According to Swiss Ramble Scottish teams share ten percent of the UK TV pool, last season the English teams shared €72m so if it was just us the distribution is likely to be around €7.2m. If Sevco make it we get 55% of that.

Based on league positions and likely qualifiers and the UEFA coefficient table we’re looking to be about 25th which would guarantee €9m

Before playing a game we’re guaranteed €31.88m by my reckoning. A win and two draws brings €36.5m, or £30m. If they make it through qualifying more like £27m.

Three home games will mean sales from 3 home games, but there are associated costs that need to be factored in. and the Europa League qualification involves potentially a couple more home full houses.

Failure at the play off stage of cl qualifying also means a €5m payment.

There will be an uptick in commercial revenues written into contracts, but there will be very significant bonuses to be paid to players, coaching staff and possibly executives. Bonuses for EL qualification are considerably smaller.

The difference between participation in the 2 tournaments isn’t as big as some think.

  25. Those figures are taken from the Uefa website. The TV pool figures and distribution comes from Swiss Ramble

If it hit the bar or post, then it’ll be easy to see. There’ll surely be cctv that has the goal in view. They should be screening for every single item that was thrown.

Fat Charlie has eaten his last pie for this season! Good stuff lads, that has to be another nail in their coffin, he aint coming back to rescue them so they have to go with what we saw on Sunday. Never like counting my chickens but that is more good news for us. Think they will drop more points than us in the run in.

At the final whistle on Sunday when most of their team were lying flat out on the turf, think they knew it then.

There are usually a few bottles lying in the toilets on most match days.

I doubt even having it on sale would prevent some bottles being smuggled in.
