All that was missing was the implied, “Celtic complete us”.

207

I always cringe when a prime minster meets the US President and that hoary old phrase, “the special relationship” is wheeled out.  It is a relationship without definition, no more or less unique than any other international relationship.  I doubt many US citizens are familiar with the term, to me, it feels that the UK is reaching to glow in the reflection of another’s elevated status.

You can therefore imagine my delight when I saw Ibrox livery on Sunday.  “Old Firm”, “This is the Old Firm”.  All that was missing was the implied, “Celtic complete us”.

Celtic fans campaign to stop using this term predates Oldco’s liquidation by many years.  As a guide, I never used it here (since 2004) nor did most others.  We knew then the association hurt the Celtic brand and that we needed to put as much clear blue water between us and them.  Celtic got onboard in 2012, when Oldco ceased, and Newco applied to join the SFA (as Sevco Scotland).

They were not alone, early match reports featured “The Rangers”, as news outlets struggled to square what happened with what others want to read.

What does it matter to me?  Not much.  If it was the other way around, I would absolutely claim Newco Celtic were in fact, just Celtic.  There is no point pretending otherwise (although I would be wrong).  If it was Celtic that liquidated in 2012, Rangers fans would never let the liquidation fact drop.  You would hear little else from them, it is the ultimate rivalry banter, why should they ignore it?

If it was Celtic that liquated in 2012, it would not matter to me what Rangers or their fans said about my club.  That relationship is a personal thing.  The facts are known, we are all free to interpret as we see fit, why should my world view be determined by how others regard what is now an historical event?

In prominently displaying the “Old Firm” livery, Newco were responding to 10 years of trolling by Celtic fans, handing them a victory they could scarcely believe when they saw it.  All the club managed to achieve is get everyone talking about why Celtic fans want no part of this phrase.  None of those reasons reflect well on the interests of Newco.

Not being a member of the Twitterati so do not tend to place too much weight on that platform. Less so now that Elon Musk has joined the Board. Twitters that is not ours. The tweet you referred to reminded me of the Rory Bremner reference from a while back. In relation to the “Old Firm” brand the fact is, we, Celtic FC, co-own it, along with The Rangers Football Club across a whole range of classifications as registered with the Intellectual Property Office. That said thanks for getting back, appreciated as always.

English League 2 results will be great for GENE’s 2nd team if they stand as they are with 30 minutes to go.

Liverpool’s recovery speed with Alexander-Arnold, Virgil, Konate, Salah, Mane and Diaz is just phenomenal.

Derby’s league hopes rest on catching Reading. At present 7 behind with 6 to play. If Reading win today ( presently drawing ), the gap will be 9.

The 21 point penalty looks like sending them into League 1.

Klopp making 3 changes. Bringing on Henderson, Firmino, Jota. Saving Mane, Salah for Man City.

I wish we could have held on to Virgil for longer. Looks as if he is playing in dressing gown and slippers, until he has to sprint. Then he looks like Usain Bolt. World class.

  8. In the interests of safety and indeed sanity, we should not give the huns any tickets for Paradise.

Instead, we should prioritise our supporters who wish to witness Ange’s journey.

F@ ck the rules. We don’t want them we don’t need them and we certainly don’t need their baggage.

I know where you are coming from, but I am sure we will reciprocate. If we don’t the conversation changes from what is the correct way forward, to, Celtic deciding unilaterally. I don’t think we want that. Playing ‘tit for tat’ with Ibrox is not in our interests, we are dragged down to a lower-level.

In my opinion it was important to have a some kind of a presence at Ibrox. I’m sure Ange & the players appreciated it.

Yes we could say F*** ’em, but that’s not the Celtic way. We will get to a solution and will keep our reputation for fairness along the way. Some say that Celtic are weak, I disagree, I think we are strong.

Maybe there will be an official change which says that opposition fans need not be accommodated, I hope not, because then the thugs and short-sighted club boards would have won. How uncivilised will that make us look?

  14. JHB,

Do you really think a ring of police and stewards is a good view ? A modern day colosseum where the token 700 are exhibited and protected from the baying mob. All for TV consumption.

No tit for tat we are half of nothing. We make our own decisions.

How many seats do we lose for segregation and the ring of yellow vested ” guards” .

A token hun presence causes so much hassle. Let’s evaluate its worth :-

Serious crowding issues as a consequence.

    Roads and thoroughfares blocked off.

    Toilets trashed.

    Seats trashed.

Subjecting our fans to massive disruption and anxiety.

Bigotry and racism spewing from our stands.

    Massive policing costs.

Depriving our fans of much sought after tickets.

All of the above for 700 dinosaurs.

I can see no positives in giving them any tickets. To reiterate F @ck the rules.

We are autonomous, let’s act like it.

    Cheers and HH to you.

You make valid points, however I take a different line.

No man(club) is an island – I prefer we act in conjuction with others to reach a consensus. We had all the “other” issues when it was 7000 and before that when away attendances at both Celtic Park & Ibrox were much bigger.

So many season-ticket holders have changed things irrecovably. That’s a challenge, but surely not an insurmountable one.

I prefer to do things by negotiation – arbitrary decisions can leave one ‘a hostage to fortune’ HH

A great idea suggested by ‘Steven’ on ETims – have the teams at the home game vs the Huns walk out under an arch with the logo, ONE CLUB SINCE 1988.

That will cause some wailing and gnashing of teeth!

Maybe I’m demonstrating a lack of class, when it comes to the huns I DGAF, but personally I would put the boot in to the horrible hordes at every opportunity. If that means a petty arch at the expense of the hun then so be it, just need to be savvy and ensure its 100% about Celtic.

On the ticket front, I’d be asking the SPFL what they are going to do regarding hun behaviour and letting them know that we feel our staff and fans were endangered at Mordor, if they are unwilling to act before the game at Celtic Park we will act unilaterally and ban away fans.

Also if, as I expect, we do a Tony Mowbray and do nothing then at the very least every hun should be physically searched before accessing our stadium, it should be a condition of entry along with sobriety.

The fact that they are using volunteer huns as stewards means Mordor is unsafe for any away fans.

  21. Good Morning all from a still delighted Garngad, the weather is crap.

i think we should have ONE CLUB SINCE 1888

plastered on the advertising boards going round

Celtic Park plus the same message on the big

    screens behind the goals

They shoved the OLD FIRM crap down our throats

on Sunday so we should express our feelings when we
