All that was missing was the implied, “Celtic complete us”.

207

I always cringe when a prime minster meets the US President and that hoary old phrase, “the special relationship” is wheeled out.  It is a relationship without definition, no more or less unique than any other international relationship.  I doubt many US citizens are familiar with the term, to me, it feels that the UK is reaching to glow in the reflection of another’s elevated status.

You can therefore imagine my delight when I saw Ibrox livery on Sunday.  “Old Firm”, “This is the Old Firm”.  All that was missing was the implied, “Celtic complete us”.

Celtic fans campaign to stop using this term predates Oldco’s liquidation by many years.  As a guide, I never used it here (since 2004) nor did most others.  We knew then the association hurt the Celtic brand and that we needed to put as much clear blue water between us and them.  Celtic got onboard in 2012, when Oldco ceased, and Newco applied to join the SFA (as Sevco Scotland).

They were not alone, early match reports featured “The Rangers”, as news outlets struggled to square what happened with what others want to read.

What does it matter to me?  Not much.  If it was the other way around, I would absolutely claim Newco Celtic were in fact, just Celtic.  There is no point pretending otherwise (although I would be wrong).  If it was Celtic that liquidated in 2012, Rangers fans would never let the liquidation fact drop.  You would hear little else from them, it is the ultimate rivalry banter, why should they ignore it?

If it was Celtic that liquated in 2012, it would not matter to me what Rangers or their fans said about my club.  That relationship is a personal thing.  The facts are known, we are all free to interpret as we see fit, why should my world view be determined by how others regard what is now an historical event?

In prominently displaying the “Old Firm” livery, Newco were responding to 10 years of trolling by Celtic fans, handing them a victory they could scarcely believe when they saw it.  All the club managed to achieve is get everyone talking about why Celtic fans want no part of this phrase.  None of those reasons reflect well on the interests of Newco.

  1. A very timorous Nicola Sturgeon reacting to the events at Ibrox. “I’m not the world’s biggest football fan” she begins with. She then throws in some emotive language when she said “thuggish behaviour” but avoids uttering the word ‘Rangers’.

Thatcher´s first Home Secretary was William Whitelaw who wanted to set up boot camps for the football hooligans of the day. If you listen to Gerry Rafferty´s song “Garden of England” you can hear a typical Whitelaw speech at the end.

The First Minister then delegates to the police, football authorities ( rump SFA) and the criminal justice system to deal with this. She offers no guidance, no solutions, no strategy, no offers to work with the club in question. However when Celtic were railed at she was prominent in demanding measures be taken. If English and Leckie were serious journalists they would be asking the Holyrood press office why our great game is not loved on high.

I saw you mentioned Newry earlier, first time there we fancied an Indian and was told where to go, back of Dunns I recall, anyways the Mrs saw a place called Nan Rice and decided that was the place, I never said anything and let her go into the bar, she did see the funny side tho >:)

  5. So that’s Morelos for the season – looks like the Ibrox club are getting a wee bit of what we have had a lot of all season.

Let’s not kid ourselves, he’s a proven goalscorer & integral to their team…..maybe ‘fizzle-out’ is now on the cards….that would be quite acceptable!

  6. So, the rules are we must allow away fans into the ground,ok

What if we say no, we will not allow it, what can “they” do about it, hee- haw I’d think

Yes I was in Kitty O’Shea’s in Frederick St in Edinburgh on Sunday. We had a room booked from 11:30am and it was a great success. There were 12 of us, with room for a few more. The pub has a number of rooms. I reckon 4 or 5 of varying sizes. You can book a room over the phone.

Sturgeon’s MO has always been the same and is very transparent

Any situation, good or bad, to wave a Saltire and claim Scottish esotericism in solving problems and she is in there, pushing ministers and civil servants aside, e.g., the shipyard takeover and now Scotrail

When it comes to actually managing the government issues, like NHS waiting lists, increasing crime, the minister in charge is rolled out

She is a very good self publicist and for Scotland in general but falls short as a leader/manager for me

I don’t want to tar her with the Ayrshire brush such that she favours the Sevconians overtly but subliminally there definitely is a bias

The ‘OldFirm’ dies on the exact minute that Celtic season ticket holders “rebel” against paying ‘OldFirm’ prices for tickets.

What are we at now, is it £53 per ticket?? 700, or, 7,000, it doesn’t matter the allocation size. Celtic season ticket holders verbally dispute the status of the ‘OldFirm’ which sounds good. But to ignore the FACt that Celtic season ticket holders are verifying the status of the ‘OldFirm’ with each ticket purchased and playing Celtic PLC’s duplicitous ‘Same Club Lie’ game is to indulge in sneaky, playground, denial, antics, maybe even hunlike when any Celtic season ticket holders with any integrity wouldn’t purchase a single ‘OldFirm’ priced ticket then deny that the ‘OldFirm’ exists at all. That would be stupid, or maybe deceitful??

If Celtic PLC say “We’re not part of anything, nothing to do with us.”…out of one side of their mouth, and then sneakily agree to KEEP ‘OldFirm’ ticket prices like they’ve been doing since 2016, and 53,000 season ticket holders play along with the PLC’s duplicitous ‘Same Club Lie’, ticket prices, if you back Celtic PLC then you are guilty of keeping the PLC’s jiggery poakery going, if you do that then where is the integrity??

    Who are the good guys??

    I’m struggling to see any.

Celtic supporters to their credit, didn’t throw missiles, ON SUNDAY, but, Celtic season ticket holders are still keeping the ‘OldFirm’ bigotry alive by purchasing deceitfully priced tickets, and then moaning about Celtic being described as part of the ‘OldFirm’ that Celtic season ticket holders are financially verifying??

If you want the ‘OldFirm’ joined at the hip status, buy a Celtic season ticket and support a PLC who will NEVER speak straight and say….

“Rangers are dead, Sevco are pretending to be Rangers FC, we as a club will adjust our season ticket prices as two2 home games against a “club” we don’t recognise who are carrying out a deceit against football, backed by Scotland’s corrupt footballing bodies, and an even more corrupt ( if that was possible ) legal and political structure in this country, we as a responsible PLC will not allow our season ticket holders to be tainted in ANY way, through ticket subscriptions, or any attendances at these, fraudulent, football fixtures, or ANY participation in this industrial scale, corruption and deceit.”

But instead, Celtic season ticket holders are governed by the other side of the ‘OldFirm’ coin, the Celtic PLC board.

If Celtic season ticket holders financially back the ‘OldFirm’ corruption, AND THEY DO, maybe its actually two2 Glasgow club’s who’ve lost their souls and died, since David Murray entered Scottish football in 1986??

I don’t see a good guy in this ‘OldFirm’ picture.

I am amazed that they have such meagre options at CF

In their title run last year they used Itten, Defoe, Roofe and Haji(i think) to cover injuries to Morelos

They have gone in very thin this year which is a surprise. Surely they have a youth to step up?

  13. Wednesday tomorrow. Feels like a good day to Start focusing very hard on beating St Johnstone. I know nothing I do or write makes one bit of difference but I do believe there is power in a collective psyche. One game at a time like we have all season.

His legacy will be the same amount of goals scored in the derby in 5 years as Reo managed in 45 mins. One more than Boyd in his entire Sevco career.

Van Bronkhorst getting a fair share of the blame for playing him too much.

Worried about what this will do to his resale value too!

I wonder if players approaching the end of their contracts with no club lined up will be busting their humps and risking injury after going 6 points behind in the league?

I was earlier on with what Gene said about not counting our chickens. Absolutely right for the team and management but what we think or say doesn’t affect that so why can’t we just gloat?

I remember 1980 collapse; my confidence didn’t cause us to turn crap

1983 was a three way fight with worthy opponents and our 5 point lead was down to delayed fixtures

2005 is the most similar situation but we were a team and management on the way out

This time we are flying and i love being this confident

The reason it wasn’t a penalty was because it didn’t stop him challenging for the ball. Ref could clearly see that

The reason we didn’t get one is because the ball was gone(even though we got one against us vs Aberdeen when Izzy slid in)

  26. IniquitousIV on

Can’t stand Carragher’s arrogance. Says Liverpool could have rested players in preparation for Man City, as they had more than enough to take care of Benfica.

Unfortunately, I believe he is correct. Klopp will probably take off his best players in the second half.

    —-

Your final paragraph says it all, although without the opportune Villa vacancy, or, something similar, he might still be there.

Roofe/Sakala/Itten were the cover, but bargain-basement purchases. Such was our collapse that they were able to do a job.

My opinion is that the players were playing for Gerrard because of his stellar reputation – they looked up to him and craved his approval; the fact that stadia were Covid-empty mattered little. Mind you their Europa League exploits this season might contradict this.

Using share-issues to fund running costs surely can’t continue. Player sales are a must now, of course it will be framed that they are selling to fund the GVB rebuild. I have doubts if GVB will be in situ next season after a barren one this.
