Amido, Dave King-gap too big to bridge

824

A meaningless win is always better than a meaningless defeat, but in the larger scheme of things, yesterday’s game against Liverpool is no more significant than last month’s games in Germany.  They are about building fitness and, if necessary, trying new things.

Amido Balde was the winner yesterday.  Some were already writing the player off, not because of any performance inadequacy, but because he was not being deployed competitively.  Victor Wanyama joined two years ago but spent the first six months of this stay warming the bench with Brown, Ledley and Kayal ahead of him.

Five months ago Rangers International FC PLC released their interim accounts, noting that their recurring operating expenses of £2.371m, were £1m per month more than their income.

£1m per month!!  To a club which has no bank borrowing facility!  Yet the alarm bells didn’t ring everywhere.  Roll on five months, 34,000 fans have been separated from their cash in return for season tickets, and now the alarms are ringing all over the place, not just the Celtic online media.

This is not news to anyone reading Celtic Quick News but in life, it’s often not so much the message as the messenger that’s significant.  That the mainstream media feel it’s appropriate to ‘tell it as it is’ about Rangers International’s finances, is a measure of how acute the situation is.

As we’ve been saying here for years, it takes close to £20m p.a., before you employ a footballer or coach, to run a football club which can accommodate circa 40,000 spectators on a regular basis.  Add your football budget onto that £20m and you have an idea of the cash needed to be a ‘top’ Scottish club.

Rangers International’s interim revenue for seven months was £9.5m which annualised up would be £16.3m.  There is a huge structural gap which no one has been able to even remotely suggest a way to bridge.

Now Dave King has told the Herald what we’ve been saying for a while, “Celtic are building reserves by selling top players that they won’t need until Rangers are back (sic) competing with them. The way our finances are being run we could end up with a gap that is too large to bridge.”

It takes hundreds of employees to run a football club at a busy Ibrox Stadium.  There are policing, rates, utility, insurance and stewarding costs, which you can’t do anything about.  Even if they double income, they’re still going to be left with a fraction of Celtic’s football budget.

As Dave King suggests, this is not a short and medium term problem, the gap is already too large to bridge.  King is wrong on one factor, Celtic will not store reserves awaiting a challenge from Rangers International (or a successor club), they are managing player assets as part of an on-going Champions League development strategy.

The other lot are finished, I tells ya’, finished! This is Private Fraser doing his Dave King impersonation:

Don’t think that JP Taylor is that much of a new boy speak to some of the Supporters who attended every game in the lead up to Seville 2003 then ended up not getting a ticket for the final. I always wondered from the following interview if the 3 tickets he held in his possession in Seville were intended for season ticketholders

Watching our game on Liverpool TV must be the youngest Celtic team I’ve seen playing a senior game. Well done those bhoys….

My son was watching the Embra derby today. Said it was dross and that he could get a game with them. I told him it would be no bother. When I told them they were on about 2000€ a month. He said maybe not then and it will explain why they are crap. He also asked would it not be better for all concerned to watch youth football. I told him with talk like that you can get a job on 2500€ a week working ať a lower level and thats just a bonus. Thats where the problem is says he. Why is that he asks seriously. I give him my look. Ah because of the huns says he.

There is a clear area for spend and that is in capacity building behind the scenes.

Many of the complaints made about Celtic and the frustrations those not addressed cause , could be reduced considerably by having the proper structures and capacity in place to support staff at Celtic who have had to make do and mend in some cases whilst all income went on the park.

Some investment in jobs, systems and training would pay huge customer relations dividends.

The downside would be nothing to complain on CQN about but I think the time is ripe for a step back to look at customer relations strategy and how everyone can be involved in pulling or pushing the club in a direction everyone accepts makes sense in the environment in which Celtic find themselves.

If Celtic’s aim, as it was put to me, was to be a world class club, then how can everyone contribute to that aim, if indeed they subscribe to it?

That is the question that should be asked and then identify what can be done by the club as a whole and in unison with supporters, many of whom already provide a service to each other, to achieve that aim.

For example when folk provide details on a purchase and give address, ask if they have any objection to their address being shared with other supporters in the same area or local CSC to help arrange transport to games. Then arrange a meeting with everyone in a locality and let the Celtic sense of fellowship takeover.

There is so much the club and supporters could do together to enhance what the support can do for each other but it requires the capacity centrally to make it happen.

Season ticket purchased before the decision was made to play in Dublin

Not been to a gemme so far mate and from the very little I have seen so far I have not missed much. Already considering making a decision not to attend any away games or if we qualify to purchase a home ticket package for the 3 home Champions League games.

If you wish you can be first in the queue to take up my option of the 3 game home package probably at a cost of circa £210

  13. I don’t know where the meeja have got these stories from that Celtic are about to sign Alfred Finnbogason. I presume they have just noticed that he is being discussed favourably on a couple of Celtic forums and figured that spinning a yarn in that general direction might sell a few papers.

A quick look at NewsNow Heerenveen (search for Finnbogason) reveals a number of headlines indicating that:

    Heerenveen want to keep Finnbogason

Heerenveen say that Finnbogason is not for sale

Finnbogason won’t be sold cheaply (in spite of Heerenveen’s financial problems)

However, I agree that it seems they will have to let him go if a seriously attractive offer is received.

Having seen his performance stats and seen quite a bit of footage, I reckon he would be a far more prolific scorer (and provider of goals for others) at Celtic than Hooper, McDonald, Venn of Hess, and anyone else since the KoK.

I personally would have no problem whatsoever with Celtic parting with £6M (if offers of £5M by others have already been refused) for this guy, on a contract that could see him become the club’s top earner if he continues his Heerenveen habit (of scoring half of the team’s goals) and exceeds 30 per season in the SPL and a few in the CL. After all, goals win games… victories seal trophies… and trophies raise our profile and bring in ££££.

    Come on Celtic, sign him.

Lets not get too carried away with yesterdays game. The performance was creditable, encouraging, etc.

I am getting a bit concerned about the lack of news concerning Joe Ledleys contract.

Thanks for your feedback about possibility of spare tickets outside Pittodrie next Saturday-much appreciated.

Ticket Office are saying they are unlikely to have any spares after all tickets have been collected from the ballot tomorrow.

Aiming to go up without tickets but thought will keep trying on CQN to see if anyone has spares-cheers
