Anatomy of transfer negotiations

148

Getting your top targets in is usually difficult to do in the middle of a transfer window, even more so in January.  The selling club is incentivised to make you wait until the last few days, while they work on attracting a competitive bid.  Whatever your opening bid is, it’s not enough.  Why would it be?

There is a notion that clubs simply have to pay the asking price to get a deal over the line.  What reluctant seller issues an asking price?  Do we have one for Matt O’Riley?  Of course not.  Any bid early in a transfer window for a top Celtic player who was under a long-term contract would be declined with a “not interested in selling” line, no matter what the price was.

If they will offer £X on 15 Jan, they will pay £X+Y on the 27th.  Despite what you read in the newspapers (apparently you do), asking prices are only issued in two circumstances: either when a club is actively trying to sell a player, or when they think the buyer will pay an outrageous fee well above value (some Saudi clubs fell into this category recently).

A simple response along the lines of “We think we can attract a higher bid from England/Germany” is sufficient to stall.  So you open with a bid that you know will be rejected, it is always rejected, then the process either stalls or edges closer to a deal.  If, as reported, Celtic have concluded a deal to sign top target Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna this early in the month, something else is at play.  Rapid are in financial crisis, dependent on borrowings and have recently failed to meet regulatory obligations.

At the halfway stage in the Bundesliga they are eight points off a Europa League spot.  The Conference League is a more likely target, but they failed to make it through the qualification rounds of that tournament this season, so they will have limited hope of a run in the competition next term.

In these circumstances, “Hard currency, why, sir, that’ll do nicely”, can be compelling.  A desperate need of money (increasingly common in Europe) would test the resolve of any club.  Kuhn is a top target for Celtic, so let’s hope the deal goes through.

  1. Missing the Celtic games but luckily the void is being filled by GAA and rugby, lots of good sport. Don’t watch alot of EPL but tuned into the Man U v Tottenham game yesterday mainly to watch Ange”s team in action. Spurs played good attacking football and I was struck by the physical size of the team in comparison to Ange’s Celtic, also the fact that he could fork out 28 million for a player thanks to the Sky money.

There’s not a lot can happen in the January window but remains to be seen what we can expect from the lad Kuhn. It’s obvious we need a striker and would like to see a guy with height to give some variation in attacking play.

Team sport has become a squad game with guys on the bench being equally important as thos starting.

If you have time try and watch the full replay of the Newcastle v Man City game, best I’ve seen and the goals were brilliant.

  3. Big Jimmy: Condolences to you on the sad loss of your dad.

    Seen a headline today

” Can Buckie Thistle cause a major upset against Celtic”

Anyone counting how many players the Dregs have been linked with?Anyone wanting cash, the deal seems to fall through,or else their “Interest has cooled”. Must be in the high teens now.

Barisic, according to the hacks somewhere,is wanted by clubs in England and all over Europe.Ther ye ar.Bet ye never knew that.

“An SFA statement read: “The Scottish FA will continue to support match officials in the face of intense and imbalanced media scrutiny, disproportionate criticism and wholly unacceptable abuse and intrusion.”

So are you sanctioning the huns or not 🤔

Do Celtic use any form of AI to identify suitable players prior to transfer identification and subsequent negotiation?

I don’t know but you might.

If we are not on the bandwagon now, we have to be prepared to enter it.

So many uses for this evolving technology ; from fan engagement, identifying suitable players, to reduction in injuries.

It will not come cheap, but all our European competitors will be using it . If we don’t embrace it we will be left behind.

Brighton and Brentford have embraced it to great effect. Especially Brighton in the South American market.

But now the big guns are seriously participating

Another thing on the horizon will be enhancing our Green footprint on all our infrastructure.

One option will be a Battery storage facility like Arsenal have got for a fully renewable energy configuration. .

Again it did not come cheap.

Do we know that initiatives like this will be mandatory in the medium term and that is partially why we have money in the bank. ?

Top class football is changing at a rapid pace. New technologies cannot be un- invented and we will have to embrace it or suffer the inevitable consequence of a managed decline.

Alternatively we could again be setting the standards in Scotland and beyond.

    HH, embrace the journey.

  14. If I can borrow BIG JIMMY’s lexicon for a moment just to admit that sometimes I can be a right CHUMP.

Last night I was bumping my gums on here ruefully regretting being unable to buy 4 “together” tickets for the Buckie Thistle game after my attempt to buy said tickets ended in failure due to my card expiry date needing updated on the ticket site. By the time I faffed about updating same I was timed out and the tickets were gone. Another couple of attempts at purchasing smaller quantities had me climbing the proverbial wall and I gave up.

Enter Burnley 78, my knight in shining armour, who very kindly offered me two tickets so that grandson and I could attend the game.

    Wonderful.

Then at ten past one this afternoon, the postie arrives and delivers an envelope from Celtic F.C. with the original desired 4 tickets enclosed. WTF!

Honestly don’t know how that happened – other than me being A RIGHT CHUMP!

Many Thanks, however, to BURNLEY 78 for your very kind gesture and to the posters who gave me advice and suggestions…. and apologies for any inconvenience caused.

N.B. No CQNers were injured or otherwise damaged by this stupidity.

  21. Tom McLaughlin on

According to BBC Radio Scotland this morning, Celtic and The Rangers are in discussion about restoring away fans at the remaining two derbies this season.

They’re apparently looking at a maximum of 750 in each case.

Unless they is prepared to give Celtic the Broomloan Road stand as previously, I fail to see the point. Surely if the corner at Ibrox was a safety concern for Celtic supporters in the past, it will still be a concern, or am I missing something?

  22. Once again many more ” Thank Yous” to EVERYONE who has Posted their condolences after my DA Passed away.

My DA didnt teach me much, especially as I never lived with him, and back in the 1960’s i only ever saw him once every Two/Three weeks, unless there was a Celtic game that he would take me to.

However, my DA DID ” introduce” me to Glasgow Celtic from a very young age, and for that alone, I will forever be so GRATEFUL.

Oh…one other thing before I forget….because I only saw him every Two or Three weeks etc….Whenever he would visit HIS Ma and Da ( who brought me up ), my DA would usually give me at least a FIVER ( sometimes £10 ) pocket money.

Back in the early 1960’s…a FIVER or £10 was a lot of money, especially for a young Bhoy. I was ALSO lucky enough to be brought up by Two of the most wonderful people ( My Granny and Granda )….who also along with other family members…spoiled me with anything I ever wanted….except when I wanted a Pony !

Through the years ( and to the end of his life), my DA would always tell me that I was a wee Bhoy who was always ” Respectful” towards adults, DESPITE being spoiled rotten by the family.

Being ” Spoiled” while at the same time always being ” Respectful;” is a bit of a contradiction I suppose,,,my DA could never figure that one out ?

Once again, THANK YOU to ALL on here and also the other Bhoys who have Texted and/or Emailed me with their comforting words.

    HH to all.

    …………………..

I FORGOT about telling you about travelling from Glasgow to Blackpool and back in the 1980’s in my DAs Hackney Taxi . The Taxi ride to Blackpool was bad enough, but the journey back to Glasgow was sheer murder, as the back of the Taxi was FULL with FIVE half drunk bodies inside, and ME being forced to sit in the small Luggage Compartment next to my DA who was driving.

My head was pounding with the DIESEL fumes and the noise of the Diesel engine all the way home.

I only went because my DA wanted some company especially on the way down to Blackpool.

    LOL

    HH BRIAN BHOY.

All the best to your family.
