Anatomy of transfer negotiations

148

Getting your top targets in is usually difficult to do in the middle of a transfer window, even more so in January.  The selling club is incentivised to make you wait until the last few days, while they work on attracting a competitive bid.  Whatever your opening bid is, it’s not enough.  Why would it be?

There is a notion that clubs simply have to pay the asking price to get a deal over the line.  What reluctant seller issues an asking price?  Do we have one for Matt O’Riley?  Of course not.  Any bid early in a transfer window for a top Celtic player who was under a long-term contract would be declined with a “not interested in selling” line, no matter what the price was.

If they will offer £X on 15 Jan, they will pay £X+Y on the 27th.  Despite what you read in the newspapers (apparently you do), asking prices are only issued in two circumstances: either when a club is actively trying to sell a player, or when they think the buyer will pay an outrageous fee well above value (some Saudi clubs fell into this category recently).

A simple response along the lines of “We think we can attract a higher bid from England/Germany” is sufficient to stall.  So you open with a bid that you know will be rejected, it is always rejected, then the process either stalls or edges closer to a deal.  If, as reported, Celtic have concluded a deal to sign top target Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna this early in the month, something else is at play.  Rapid are in financial crisis, dependent on borrowings and have recently failed to meet regulatory obligations.

At the halfway stage in the Bundesliga they are eight points off a Europa League spot.  The Conference League is a more likely target, but they failed to make it through the qualification rounds of that tournament this season, so they will have limited hope of a run in the competition next term.

In these circumstances, “Hard currency, why, sir, that’ll do nicely”, can be compelling.  A desperate need of money (increasingly common in Europe) would test the resolve of any club.  Kuhn is a top target for Celtic, so let’s hope the deal goes through.

  1. Last May, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp addressed Kelleher’s future as he told reporters: “Kelleher? What’s happening with Kelleher? He has a contract [until 2026]. You want us to say goodbye [to fellow goalkeeper Adrian] just in case?. Honestly, I can’t see Caoimh leaving. It must be an extraordinary offer for me to start thinking, I have to say.”

    Re: Kelleher,

If his contract is till 2026, then this summer it has 18 months left on it. Usually that’s when clubs either ask agents to commit to an extension or sell. BR has said that he’ll wait till the summer for a keeper, however I think the asking price will still be to hot for us, unless he wants to come, por cierto.

From Shorties ‘Tuesday Scottish Gossip’ column: “Celtic have been told Kuhn is injury prone and “terrible at shooting” – and that they are paying over the odds for the winger. (Scottish Sun).”

The guy’s not even signed yet.

From all the tripe written about football this morning by the SMSM it’s revealing Shortie have chosen to highlight this particular story/headline, but that aside, has anyone ever seen such a headline/story written about any player the huns have signed? Indeed, has anyone ever seen such a headline/story written about a player ANY club in the SPFL has signed?

I do not consume the SMSM (ex. Shortie as I am legally obliged to pay a license fee to fund) so this is a genuine question.

My suspicion is the answer is ‘no’.

  5. I think it is well passed the time that Celtic make an official complaint to BBC in London about their Scottish sports sections total bias , apart from Michael Stewart, against us. They do not even try to hide it these days. Having to pay for this really irritates me.

  6. Anyone surprised by the bbc comments on anything Celtic . Or the rags for that matter . We will have to put up with it as no action is forthcoming from our suits , Alex Ferguson never took there nonsense , he gave them a rocket and barred them till they played the game . But we’re nicer than him . Someday we won’t turn the other cheek , hope it’s in my lifetime . HH

  8. The Blogger,

James Forrest did an early article on this shameful piece this morning. Some bampot from Transfer market, the idiots guide to prices on Shortie. For example they have Kuhn valued at £ 1.5 million, and Casualty actor,Kemar Roofe at £ 2.2 million.Nuff said.

  9. Josh Doig back on the market at around 4.5 million.I wanted us to go for him when he was at HibsNo idea if we have had a look, but we should.,so maybe a bit biased.Reports saying he has been good in Italy.Scottish which helps, tall, which will deffo help with the posters on here.Destined to take over from Robertson as Scotland LB.

“According to BBC Radio Scotland this morning, Celtic and The Rangers are in discussion about restoring away fans at the remaining two derbies this season. They’re apparently looking at a maximum of 750 in each case.”

Unless they is prepared to give Celtic the Broomloan Road stand as previously, I fail to see the point. Surely if the corner at Ibrox was a safety concern for Celtic supporters in the past, it will still be a concern, or am I missing something?”

I think this is just about perception. If you have ever been to Small Claims court you have to make every attempt, and be seen to make every attempt, to resolve the situation before it comes to court. I would imagine this is much the same here. We have not taken their offer of tickets on (very legitimate) safety grounds. We have not offered them tickets, not as it is unsafe per se for their fans at CP (though did it once cause issues with fans congestion outside due to policing?), but likely for sporting integrity – so both teams play away with no support.

It will still come down to safety and short of banning all the bottle throwing, bile spewing hate merchants that surround the away fans at £1brox I don’t think their kkklub can offer anything to Celtic that would see any change in our position so it is for show imo.

    QB

  11. Personally I’ll be extremely disappointed if we give the huns any tickets for Parkhead.

It was a great atmosphere at last game without the hassle of segregation inside and outside the stadium. Fans in the vicinity felt safer, because they were safer.

It will be a betrayal of those fans who eagerly bought tickets.

We don’t want them and we certainly don’t need them.

    HH.

  12. The latest criticism coming our way from the SMSM will just be ignored , quite rightly, by the club.

We can’t get side-tracked by all the negative energy directed towards us , it will just result in our focus getting lost , manager asked to comment on the rumour.

We have on occasion banned reporters for over stepping the mark , Keith Jackson and Keevins , come to think about is Jackson not still banned.

Grovelling press were a contributing factor in the Huns going pop , so whilst incredibly annoying today’s article about Kuhn , the best response is to put the round thing between the 2 sticks often.

  13. Kelleher will never oust the present keeper at Liverpool.Who could?,so he has a decision to make.If Klopp does decide to sell,I think we would have strong competition from the EPL,although I think Klopp would prefer he went elsewhere. No idea if the boy has any Celtic leanings, nevertheless, would not be cheap. How expensive could hospitalize some of our esteemed leaders.

C40-Apologies for the aggressive reply. Obviously, debate about the board plays an important part of CQN but the comments section seems to be far too preoccupied with it imo. Everything seems to come back to it, and while the common perception seems to be that Paul67, as a board stooge, is responsible for it with his constant output of board propaganda, I don’t think that’s the case.

AT- no need to apolgize to me C40,your honestly forwarding what you think, never any harm in that,i dint think there is enough chat bout our board, good Celtic folk are maybe explaining their woes and fears they have on Celtic sites as they cant seem to via their shareholding.Long may it always come back to the board all that is is our arrowhead being questioned, long may that reign we only need to look along the Clyde to see what happens when debate is erased, dissent, criticize and altered and improve is what Celtic fans want, imo to solidify confidence in our board. The dead hun fans nodded thro every policy minty made,we are different as we question, yup some of it may annoying.P67 as a board stooge mmmmm as he used to post, maybe built up due to not much dissent put up,but its his blog, thats why i value the comments section and the range of opinions more,

C40-Every article quickly descends into proxy arguments about PL and/or the board. It looks like every article is about it but that’s not my experience.

AT- Well that to me highlights what i am talking of.being stagnant.Good Celtic folk are not being communicated to via their board, hence it appears the same old same old when its not.for eg i have already written that the fabled £72 bank fig is not so as our a/c say tfer balances will be reconciled and Barrowfied invested in,wheech 35/40m invested in our future

That corner at the bigotdome is not safe for any supporter’s more so us. The solution was to put up netting, which they failed to do , says a lot about their support.

I think them moving the angry bairs to another part of the dump (under the guise of creating a good atmosphere) is all part of the plan to eventually get to 7500.

Personally, I would still not allow any of that mob near our stadium.

    Dont need them.

But I suppose they are carried away with big Kafflic Phil winning the league this season. :)

  23. lets all do the huddle on

dont see the point in taking 750 tickets for ibrox.

apart from the safety issue, you wont be able to hear them in amongst the 50000 hun.

and virtually all the tickets will go to staff, fat cats and sponsors so it will make no difference to the rest of us or the players.

it has to be a minimum of a few thousand or none at all.

I don’t see why, if we were planning any of the above, we would not have made a payment to another company in the last years accounting period to reduce our tax liabilities if any of these were imminent.

So either we have other plans or these plans are all a way off from being realised (planning permission etc.) if they are even on the table?

The Wifi is a bad joke and a gateway to much better supporter interactions / experience so a no brainer for me. The PA system is also lacking for me (though it could be my hearing) – can rarely make out a word they say.

    QB

  25. Greenpinata

Stadium and Barrowfield development would be capital expenditure and can be done by borrowing and paying over a number of years so wouldn’t have to be from cash in the bank.

  26. QB & Gene.

The WI- Fi is an absolute joke and not fot for purpose No excuses and an upgrade is vital.

Celtic refused to take the Scottish government interest free loan. I believe that defined our strategy.

I realise that infrastructure upgrades would be capital expenditure. Using a combination of money upfront and loans would reduce our interest payments. Remember football is not ” normal ” business.

I also believe we have a strategy that will ensure that never again will a bank give us a 24 hour ultimimation of bankruptcy.

Over his Glasgow Taxi tears ( 38 years ), when I lived in the west end, there were a few Huns who would approach me and tell me to THANK my DA, for picking them up off the streets of Partick etc the night before ( when they were steamin drunk), and take them home, WITHOUT charging them any Fare.

  28. Thanks again to ALL those who have Posted kind words of comfort in the last couple of days.

As I was too unwell since early December last year, and NOT being out anywhere for a Pint etc, I had to CANCEL my COVID/FLU JAG appointments on several occasions.

However, I had another appointment this morning, and I booked a Taxi to take me to The Mosque for both Jags.

Happily, the Mosque was very quiet and I was in and out in 10 minutes, and called a Taxi on my departure to take me back home to the Calton.

I was very tempted to have the Taxi drop me off at a Pub instead of my home address, but I had FORGOTTEN to put my false teeth in before I left the hoose….so NO BEERS for me Today after all !

I was concerned that I would maybe bump into Kylie Minogue in some Pub, and I havent any Teeth in !
