Anderson: not many societal organisations bring people together

114

“Football is at the heart of communities across Scotland, and there are not many societal organisations that bring people together nowadays, to catch them in a net when they fall.”  The words of James Anderson, Scottish football’s great benefactor, as he filled the game’s coffers with around £3m.

He said more, all of it worthy, but those words struck me.  Football has access to people that government and health services could never dream of.  It brings community to the lonely, it motivates thousands to help others, it gives a proud identity to some who were not given much respect when young.

Of course, a lot of idiots are also attracted to the spectacle and drama, but James ‘gets it’.  Build that man a statue!

Ah, my mistake. I thought it was a debate trying to solve a difficult balancing act between operating costs, 10IAR aspirations, impact of COVD19 and fan finances.

    __

It’s funny because I am usually considered a happy clapper on here.

The point I made was simple, the club has banked £37.7 million cash thanks to the generosity of the fanbase.

They also utilized the government furlough scheme.

I understand that the club will need the guaranteed season book income to help provide stability. I have already renewed my season book.

But the club should be able to make this right with supporters at some point. This should be reviewed at the end of the season.

Spot on about statues. Sadly in society today, some idiot somewhere is ready to take offence. Hence the lobby to ban Easter cards, Xmas Cards relating to the birth of Jesus, it just goes on and on.

The thing is, the clowns who give into these pricks. Offended, I get offended every day, and what do I do, deal with it, simple.

    Sorry…

Do you honestly think there are people out there that want to ban Christmas cards with Christ’s image?

I’ll put it to you this way, the British Empire raised hell across the globe from Donegal to Mumbai. Incidents like Bloody Sunday were not due to a few bad apples. Nobody is advocating erasing things from the history books.

But do we want to continue celebrating the legacies of imperialism and slavery? Not me.

The only possible compromise is to do what’s being suggested here:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-52965230

Keep the statues and monuments but acknowledge they honor slaveowners.

  5. Timaloy29 – The point I made was simple, the club has banked £37.7 million cash thanks to the generosity of the fanbase.

I’d say it’s a team effort. It’s a mixture of fan money, success fee (in Europe and home), sponsorship deals, etc. That money is clearly a rainy day scenario (lack of qualification into europe) not the absolutely monsoon that is COVID19.

Timaloy29 – They also utilized the government furlough scheme.

Agreed but the training and season coming up will have ended that as ‘work’ kicks back in. There are clear revenue shortfalls (the cup, home games, etc) that didn’t come in as a result of COVID, probably well in excess of the savings.

Timaloy29 – But the club should be able to make this right with supporters at some point. This should be reviewed at the end of the season.

I want the club to be united and this has proved divisive but what’s the answer here? What does that look like?

With players and staff reporting in at Lennoxtown, it’s time to have the gap left by Damien Duff filled. I’d ask Paul Hartley if he fancied working the training drills with John Kennedy for us.

Won two league medals under Gordon, he’s made a decent fist of managerial appointments with limited ability players. Of course, we don’t require his support team at Cove so would he take a drop from first to third?

    No Thommo thanks Neil.

    _________

The club will have lost income from 4 home games. The cup games may be replayed next season in front of fans (that’s the SPFL’s preference) so that income could still arrive.

It’s hard to define what’s possible when we don’t know how many games are missed. But the club should if possible make some cup games season book games.

The club owes the fans a debt.

Timaloy29 – note with interest your comments here (and in previous thread) about Celtic making it “right” at some point.

IMHO, an excellent point – agree with you.

Right now the financial outlook is too unstable but, hypothetically, things might have settled down when season 2021/22 begins?

At that point – a season ticket reduction for those who renewed this year AND a one off olive branch initiative for those who were not able to, would be sensible.

I posted that Celtic are on record at the outset of Covid 19 in saying that the players had taken significant pay cuts

    Here’s what you posted,

Only the executives at CFC, not players have taken pay cuts and there’s no stewarding etc. Players have deferred some wages but only until season ticket money comes in, bonuses are also due.

Here’s a reminder of what Celtic have said,

The first-team squad, manager Lennon, backroom staff and club executives have taken a voluntary and “significant reduction” in salaries. They have also agreed to defer “a significant proportion of their earnings”, with the money-saving measures in place from April to June”

Like I said, in my original post Celtic players are included in those who’ve taken a reduction in salary.

  14. Glibby McShameless on

Yesterdays “editorial” highlighted how some of us luckier than others have accumulated some savings as we have not been spending during the lockdown. But others have lost their incomes or are reduced to bare bones. Many of these fans have been there for the other 9 titles. They could miss out through no fault of their own. I’m sure those of us with a few bob saved in the circumstances might see our mates don’t lose out.

    Just a thought.

  19. The furlough scheme is being used because it is available. In very unusual times the government has set this up a scheme and Celtic have correctly utilised it.

The fact celtic have money in the bank does not mean that celtic should be excluded, the plan is to protect businesses like celtic because celtic is a major contributor in terms of paying tax. Economic recovery will need businesses like celtic

There will be many businesses accessing the funding that have not paid the level of tax celtic have paid over the years and will likely contribute far less than celtic moving forward.

We all get to decide if and how we want to spend our money. This season I am paying for a virtual season ticket with the hope that I will get to enter the stadium at some point sooner rather than later.
