Angry, bitter and ugly consequences for us all

150

No one has directly suggested Newco should have had a penalty when the ball struck Alistair Johnston’s hand moments before halftime on Saturday.  Abdallah Sima was offside, the attacking move effectively ended when he tried to win possession.  This fact is being overlooked by the losing club and instead, it is being implied they were denied a penalty by a malicious actor.  Many news outlets have also reported Newco were (rightly or wrongly) denied a penalty, a tad inflammatory, but worse has happened.

What’s more, during the halftime interval, the BBC had received enough information to report “Regardless [of the offside], the officials apparently deemed the movement of [Johnston’s] hand to be natural.”  So we knew then the VAR did not deem the incident sufficient to merit examination of the earlier offside decision.

You are free to dispute the handball incident, just as the decision by the same VAR when Connor Goldson put two hands to a Carl Starfelt shot when the same teams met a year earlier.  We are football fans, we disagree and dispute decisions.  But, there is a line even fans do not cross.

For full disclosure, here is my take on the Goldson/Starfelt incident a year ago, I thought Celtic should have had a penalty, and called for consistency from SFA officials (SFA Head of Refereeing, Crawford Allan) who chose to comment when he believed Celtic were advantaged by a decision, not the other way around.

Yesterday, Newco directors James Bisgrove and Craig Robertson met Crawford Allan and afterwards issued an incendiary statement claiming, “From the meeting, there was an overriding consensus the VAR decision of no handball was incorrect.”  This implies Allan told them he believed the VAR got the decision wrong.

It’s been reported they have requested that the VAR in question, Willie Collum, does not officiate at any of their games in future.  This comes two years after the same club went after referee Kevin Clancy, for red carding Ryan Kent at Pittodrie.  Two Newco ‘fans’ were subsequently charged in connection with threats made to Clancy.

The SFA have yet to issue a statement but let media outlets know they dispute Newco’s version of events.  Crawford Allan looks increasingly out his depth.  Carelessly shooting the breeze about a decision can be weaponised by nefarious actors.  If there is a good explanation, we must hear it, if not, he should consider his position.

No one lied to their manager.  No one changed a match report after it became clear a conspiracy would not hold.  This was a simple handball dispute for a move that was confirmed as offside.

I wish I could tell you the widespread reaction to an offside incident was a smokescreen to cover up for a defeat, or a lack of funds to spend appropriately this month, or an attempt to build some siege mentality at a club which is living on the edge.  It’s not.  Collum and Clancy have ethnic heritage in common, a triggering matter to some.

What will happen next?  RC referees will experience increased pressure at Newco games.  They know they will make mistakes, they know that if they officiate Newco they will make mistakes against that club.  And they know what will follow.

I don’t think this behaviour works for clubs.  Referees can also adopt a siege mentality, wagons will circle.  The Halo Effect of not conceding a penalty kick for 75 games disappeared with their initial reaction to Saturday’s defeat.  Human nature is almost impossible to calculate.

Once you permit outrage at a perceived injustice, it is very difficult to deescalate.  The perception of being an angry, bitter and ugly outfit is difficult to shift.  Anger released endorphins can be addictive.  Sensible people find it impossible to work in these environments, the organisation decays.  So it’s not all bad.

I remember no surname said “ Poor decision by the linesman, I think his name is Murphy” and then went on his rant.

As you say, a dog whistle. Never called out on it.

    Simple question.

Has any celtic board ever banned a group of Celtic fans befor.

I know individual fans get banned etc.

    David66 – what am I missing?

    (Genuine question)

To my knowledge the only subgroup of supporters Celtic has banned are the Green Brigade.

The latest ban (as reported by Celtic – I’m happy to believe it, understand others won’t be) was for breaking rules.

Those infractions (again as reported by Celtic) included threatening behaviour to stewards and breaking barriers.

I think it’s only fair that groups of fans don’t do this.

I assume the Green Brigade agree because they’re back at Celtic Park on match days.

    Which I’m glad about.

    Onwards … together.

    (including the fearties)

  4. Sevco want the right of veto. They want to decide who can officiate their matches and who can’t. We should support them in this matter and should of course demand that all clubs have this right.

We should demand that Muir, Walsh, Beaton etc.etc.etc be banned from refereeing celtic games.

  5. Guys if you are bored and in need of a proper good laugh ….2 suggestions …firstly get a hold of this years VIZ annual ….the barbers pole and secondly tune in to Sevco podcast ..the gallant few …if you can get past the general level of ugliness and idiocy …it really is delusional laugh a minute stuff 🤣🤔

I don’t think any other contribution will shine a brighter light on this Pythonesque, surreal farce we are witnessing.

If we had rehired Ange two days ago (after we defeated Sevco 2-1) to fake a press conference from a year ago?

I don’t think anyone could have written a better script.

Perhaps questions for non Celtic fans but here goes ……

Does anyone truly want to understand the difference between us and them?

Apart from the GB and the Celtic Bhoys ( ?) have we ever had `groups` of Celtic fans?

Celtic casuals in the 1980s, remember them getting a good kicking at Easter Road and it wasn’t from Hibs fans 🙄

  8. Prestonpans Bhoys :

    I remember it well.

Inside the Easter Road, a small group of “casuals” (identified by their woolen ski hats ) started throwing stones at the Hibs fans.

About 2 seconds later a couple of “Auld Hans” behinf the goal, sprinted down , gave them a single slap, took their hats, off them , threw them over the fence, and warned them in no uncertain terms what the consequences would be if they ever came back.

They skulked off, like the naughty school kids they were.

That was the last I ever saw of them.

They probably contribute on CQN now… 😀

  9. Celtic had 3 first team squad players leave in the summer.

    Tilio

    We recalled

    Scales

    Johnston M

I am struggling to see how a treble winning team losing 3 from a squad, which already had a few in reserve awaiting their chance, can realistically be accused (as we are by the BBC online) of having of having a poor transfer window in the summer when few could possibly have had a chance to prove themselves in this period.

I get they are desperate to grasp every negative they can and to sow seeds of discontent but saying Brendan wants to stay at lennoxtown this next 2 weeks, rather than go to Dubai, in order to keep close to transfer movements, is ridiculous in 2024.

Unlike our rivals a total rebuild was not required at Celtic in 2023 summer. What will be needed this window will be about marginal experience upgrades and cover for those on NT duty. Not a massive movement of players in.

Judgements on any exits and loans outward which we might see value in concluding will have been made.

Meantime Phillipe (who has never actually had any real successful football experience outside of the hotbed which is the Belgian league ahem) will be swooping for more of the top signings our rivals need from their exotic sounding Spanish base.

I think the jumping up and down from them is brought on by shock. They are never denied, so are not used to not getting a penalty when they want one. They are in shock

Us on the other hand have been educated to assume we won’t get one – even a stone wall penalty.

On the Mr Allen stepping down. There is more chance us getting a penalty.

Ah the casuals they were in almost every team in those days!

I moved to Edinburgh in 1982 and if there was no Celtic games on or can’t get a ticket, I would go and see Hibs. There was a game at Dens Park SC semi against the 🐑 which the Dons won 3;0.

Beforehand me and my Hibs mate were walking to the ground, we both had green & white scarfs on. As we were talking I realised that we were in a crowd of fans with no colours. Moreover they had distinct sheep 🐑 accents.

Yes we were in the middle of the Aberdeen casuals 🫣. They actually ignored us and we went sharp left away from them. Mate says why have we not been hammered? I said I think they have bigger fish to fry although they may also be confused why someone with a West Coast accent was at a Hibs game 😅🤣😂

There are a number of things about Gaza which don’t add up. Egyptian intelligence officers claim that they warned Israel of unusual Hamas activity at the start of the week ending in 7 Oct. Israel denies any such warning. On 7 Oct., Hamas irregulars breached ‘the world’s most sophisticated defence and monitoring systems. Hamas was then able to murder over a thousand Israelis, rape Israeli women and abduct over 200 hostages before the IDF responded. This stinks.

Netanyahu has one stated aim. That is to kill Palestinians and drive them out of Gaza – to create an Israeli state from the river to the sea. The unstated aim is to foment a never ending war. Such a war is his only guarantee against doing jail time. The lawyers always ask the question: ‘Cui bono?’ (Who benefits). The answer, maybe not the only one, to anything ugly in Gaza is Benjamin Netanyahu. By the way, Netanyahu funded Hamas through Qatar. /

*singing fae the same hymn book as me here, the war criminal is using the same tactics and the same reason tae as his tangerine heid pal, only he has succeeded so far, as if it hudnae had been for General Mark Milley the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff he would have went tae war with Iran and his only purpose was tae dae a thatcher and bush and save his job.

Mark who is of Irish descent, his mother was Mary Murphy, and whose paternal grandfather was from Newfoundland, and I defy anyone tae show me a more friendly and peaceful bunch of people than the “Newfies”, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics after completing a 185-page-long senior thesis titled “A Critical Analysis of Revolutionary Guerrilla Organization in Theory and Practice”, a Master of International Affairs degree from the School of International & Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University and another Master of Arts degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College, he is also an attendee of the MIT Center for International Studies Seminar XXI National Security Studies Program, as opposed tae a bengal lancer with his phony bone spurs which he now cannae remember which foot, well I have had them and they are so painful that you can NEVER forget which, foot believe me.

Anyway, after he lost the election General Milley became concerned he was preparing to stage a coup and held informal discussions with his deputies about possible ways to thwart it, telling associates: “They may try, but they’re not going to fucking succeed, you can’t do this without the military, you can’t do this without the CIA and the FBI, we’re the guys with the guns.”

He also quoted as saying “this is a Reichstag moment”, comparing the trumpet’s attempts to overturn the election to the event used to cement Nazi Germany and referring to his false statements about electoral fraud as “the gospel of the Führer”.

General Milley reportedly told police and military officials preparing to secure Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration: “Everyone in this room, whether you’re a cop, whether you’re a soldier, we’re going to stop these guys to make sure we have a peaceful transfer of power, we’re going to put a ring of steel around this city and the Nazis aren’t getting in.”

On January 12, 2021, General Milley and the Joint Chiefs of Staff issued a statement condemning the storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of Trump and reminding all service members of their obligation to support and defend the Constitution and reject extremism, they said: “As we have done throughout our history, the U.S. military will obey lawful orders from civilian leadership, support civilian authorities to protect lives and property, ensure public safety in accordance with the law, and remain fully committed to protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

Sorry for the rant there ghuys but its just the way I feel about both demagogues, in fact all kind of haranguers.

  15. every time we get a corner – I’m never expecting a Celtic head on the end of it, despite quality delivery.

Our center halfs lack the height or jumping ability and since GG left, we have no natural striker with this ability.

Scott Mckenna is a fantastic defender but doesn’t threat in the air (unless I’m mistaken). Therefore, we need a striker to get on the end os these crosses in open play and corners.

Kyogo, Maeda, Bernardo and Oh all very poor in the air.

‘The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football’

I don’t like criticising Celtic fans. But I have to take odds with at least a section of them. What I did on Saturday was something I’ve felt like doing for quite a while.

It’s my sincere wish that it will have a lasting effect, as I’m sure that the vast majority of our fans do. Celtic supporters have enjoyed a lot of good times during the past few years and all of it was due to hard work – by the players, the backroom boys and the directors.

The fans too have played a major role and we don’t want to see it all ruined now by the bad element who have recently emerged. Nor do we want to see the fans of long standing who followed us through the lean years discouraged from watching us play.

This bad element – or the wreckers as the View called them last week – are singing and chanting about things which have nothing to do with football.

Surely there are enough Celtic songs without introducing religion or politics or anything else.

I think when there are more than one or two who haven’t contributed since signing in Summer, then it’s not a a surprise to have Celtic supporters say it was a ‘bad window.’ It was the probably the most expensive and even expansive window as per usual, facts bound to be lost in SMSM.

The maxim for reporting football in Scotland is presently ‘ off the radar ‘ backing Sevco in their quest for a new rule ‘ Penalty to Rainjurz in every game ‘ ‘ Ironic, that the new club who really did have a seriously bad window, and had to appoint a new saviour manager before Christmas.

  22. this season has been deplorable from an officiating standpoint – the only outlier is sevco who have benefited from all subjective decisions. Goldson handballs (take your pick), Cup final, Pull back against motherwell. Teams getting players booked early to nullify competitive threat.

The fix has been on from the get go – expect it to get worse on the back of the siege mentality from this despicable football club.

SFA should fine them, threaten with deductions etc… but they don’t bcoz they allow themselves to be bullied.
