Another dysfunctional league

644

The Football League in England have woken up to the notion that they do not have a working business model.  Solidarity payments from the FA Premier League’s new TV deal will earn Championship clubs £2.3m a season (considerably more than Celtic will receive from TV for winning the SPL), with League One sides earning £324k and League Two sides earning £250k.

Unfortunately, for those hoping to establish a well-balanced and competitive structure, parachute payment to those relegated from the Premier League will earn each club £69m (£23m in year one, £18m in year two and £9m in years three and four).

The Guardian report that today Championship clubs are expected to warn the Premier League that they risk permanently damaging the “integrity of the Football League” by increasing parachute payments to the proposed level.  An unusual case of a group asking for some of its members to receive less money.

The Football League doesn’t have a viable business model.  Clubs spend unsustainable amounts of money trying to attain the riches of the Premier League, where they can add zeros to both income and expenditure.  Most fail and many of them plummet down the divisions.  Even those who drop into the Championship with parachute payments (albeit at the old level) find deleveraging too difficult.

The SPL doesn’t have a viable business model either.  They should be talking to the Football League and see what benefits could accrue from working together.

  1. prestonpansbhoys at 20:41,

Very good point. IMHO Charles was promised certain things by those that run the game in Scotland which they have subsequently been unable to deliver.

Hence his obvious fury at the entire Scottish game. In his short time with us he has insulted the SPL leadership and the SPL clubs, insulted the SFA, he has personally led Sevco fans in publicly taunting Stewart Regan, he has led an official boycott of Dundee Utd, he has reiterated on several occasions his desire for Sevco to play elsewhere, and he has attempted to bribe SFL clubs to accept an insane plan to place his (and our!) youth teams in the 4th circle of football hell that is SFL3.

And this is just his public utterances. His roadshows are even more interesting if FF reports are true…

Now, we learn that he is paying a total dud of a striker 250k a year, a figure that increases substantially on an annual basis. One suspects this kind of deal is typical amongst the high profile players they bought. With Sevco losing a million a month, with crowds dropping, and with league reconstruction threatening to make a season ticket price rise more difficult, then clearly our Charlie does not have his troubles to seek.

On top of all this, the share price is nosing downwards, so that every day his loot, sorry, his investment is reduced.

There is the real possibility of another default by a team in blue playing at Ibrox. I wonder if the authorities in Scotland are any more prepared for this one than the last one?

back to the problem in hand, any MBA students out there,

your business is losing £1m per month,

but your accounts say you have £22m in cash due to a succesful share issue.

your stuck in the current operating environment, cant move or expand the business,

a wee SWOT analysis says your in deep do do due to regulations not allowing you to “fast track” the business.

are you fecked or what ?

Hi Ghuys, Salve salve:- Been fishing today and heading for London tomorrow, so time limited. However I think it is worthwhile reading Brian Wilson in today’s Scotsman, He has a right go at the offensive behaviour at Football act I do not know if he is still a memeber of the board but I thought it interesting anyway.

Can’t believe Liverpool was 10 years ago.

Was off the drink for Lent, took a half day from work and drove down with one of my pals – had tickets for the Celtic end, and had already got tickets/flights for Seville.

The feeling when BBJ smashed that one into the top corner was absolutely incredible – being sober (very rare for a European game) made it even better!

  7. the school.

had a long conversation today with a younger building surveyor celtic supporter,

explained my concerns, the heritage, why i want as a very minimum the frontage retained.

their opinion was the same, why not, its a handsome building, and also, they dont believe its any way necessary to demolish, they said, in surveyor circles, its known the building is not decrepid. or a danger.

next move is for plans to actually be lodged, right now havnt seen anything, outlying master plan, but no planning applications or consents.

i dont want to be a drama queen, but why not retain it, the rest of the east end is gone, why not have keep the building that Gallagher, McGrory , Thompson , Evans, Stein , McGrain, McStay and Larsson jogged past to get to the Barrowfield.

For me its an iconic building,

having raised the question with many, i feel , maybe our generation the em , over 25’s , are sympathetic, the youths are not (their too busy getting kettled)/

  11. I know that some do not want the gossip from SSB etc; repeated on here but I think it is important to know what your enemies are thinking. I am only an occasional listener but I heard some while driving home tonight.

Anyways, Andy Walker stated tonight that he knows (he definitely said “knows”) that, at least, a couple of Celtic Directors want Sevco back in the top flight ASAP. Like Keevins before him, he presents this as an accomplished fact and I have to believe that it may (I said may not will) be true.

Now, when Celtic hear commentators stating that they have the inside track on their views, views which they choose not to share with their fans, but prefer to have nod and winks leaked through their media lackeys, I have to ask what is the game here?

Are they leaking disinformation and this is all part of some master plan that we mere mortals cannot discern and cannot be trusted to know?

Or are they testing the water for the day when they have to admit that this is their preferred option?

Now, I have to admit that, if the Board said the game in Scotland is fecked without Sevco and we cannot afford sporting integrity, I would have more respect for them, though I’d still like the financials explained as to why it is necessary to invite the card shark back to our table given that we honest taxpayers have just paid for circa £50m of their recent expenditure on their behalf. They sound to me like a “cash cow” that has drained money and prizes from us and asked us to pay for the privilege.

But, I can have no respect for a long game that involves waiting for a portion of Celtic fans to get bored with the Sevco story, another portion to admit that we are losing attendances, and another portion to admit that they are missing their Old Firm fix, and all to agree that the solution is to have them back, unpunished, triumphant, embittered and even more unpleasant than before.

If there is genuine bad news out there, just be straight with us. No PR and no pussyfooting.

And if not…….. then please issue a statement to the effect that you have heard various press people including Mr. Walker and Mr. Keevins asserting that The Celtic Board want Rangers back and you want to make it clear that these people are not privy to any official view from the Celtic Board. Hell, you do not even need to deny their specific statements and risk bringing retribution from Govan on your heads; you merely need to make it clear that Walker & Keevins et al have no inside info and are just flying kites for their own purposes.

Time to bring our enemies down a peg and, if true, a sharp rebuke to any director who gave any word of comfort to any active proponent of a quick Sevco return.

That is not too much to ask is it?

Celtic have lodged an application to demolish the old school, and build a museum on the site. The application made the school building , which Celtic originally wanted to turn into the museum, sound like a Roman ruin. If possible I would like to see the building dismantled rather than demolished, maybe rebuilt as the entrance to a new school, or incorporated into it. But this is Glasgow, if you cant save the Odeon you wont save a school.

  24. SFTB – I was listening to SSB tonight and have dropped in and out for the last wee while. They are on a fully fledged campaign to ignore any concept of sporting integrity.

Now then – let me and others be clear. If this happens then I and most scottish football fans are gone – we are no more and then the scottish game WILL die.

Its dead simple – Celtic are playing a very very dangerous game here and they will get their “reward”. In the last two days they have been called out in the media by the police as colluding with them (Les Grey last night) and by Andy Walker tonight.

We await their response with baited breath!

The start line at a 3 mile cycle race at Celtic Park, 1893.

These cyclists are under starter’s orders in the first heat of the 1893 Irish/Scottish meeting. Cycle racing had become a very popular spectator sport by the 1880s, and races could draw crowds of up to 10,000. Many Scottish football stadiums were built with cinder running tracks around the pitches, and at Celtic Park a cement cycle track was added on the perimeter. The stadium hosted the 1897 World Cycling Championships.
