Another dysfunctional league

644

The Football League in England have woken up to the notion that they do not have a working business model.  Solidarity payments from the FA Premier League’s new TV deal will earn Championship clubs £2.3m a season (considerably more than Celtic will receive from TV for winning the SPL), with League One sides earning £324k and League Two sides earning £250k.

Unfortunately, for those hoping to establish a well-balanced and competitive structure, parachute payment to those relegated from the Premier League will earn each club £69m (£23m in year one, £18m in year two and £9m in years three and four).

The Guardian report that today Championship clubs are expected to warn the Premier League that they risk permanently damaging the “integrity of the Football League” by increasing parachute payments to the proposed level.  An unusual case of a group asking for some of its members to receive less money.

The Football League doesn’t have a viable business model.  Clubs spend unsustainable amounts of money trying to attain the riches of the Premier League, where they can add zeros to both income and expenditure.  Most fail and many of them plummet down the divisions.  Even those who drop into the Championship with parachute payments (albeit at the old level) find deleveraging too difficult.

The SPL doesn’t have a viable business model either.  They should be talking to the Football League and see what benefits could accrue from working together.

  1. If he has blood on his hands let’s find out. Aren’t we capable of asking the right questions and making up our own minds after hearing the answers? I think the Green Brigade are awesome so there is no attack on them. Maybe they need some wise counsel on occasion. For example offer to drop the very few ra songs and lateral movement and trade that with a collective agreement to curb the filming and so on?

  2. Have the board handed data on GB members to the police or anyone else?

If so, what have they handed over and on how many individuals?.

If so, was this on request (of whom) or volunteered?

Programming a computer to automatically pass on data is voluntary. Buying such software is voluntary.

Computers do as they are told.

Except if you’re an old CQNer. Then they do the opposite.

  3. Too true margaret mcgill…and it will break our hearts to do it…my glass is always half full..but after recent events i can see thems getting every dirty stroke in their favour..unless our plc grow a pair and we make sure of it

  4. Who is the more honest of the two here? Francisco Sandaza who admits playing for the zombies for the money so that his family can have a better life or Andy Walker who is quite happy to sit and listen to the huns’ disgusting repertoire about his wife without uttering a peep, whilst pocketing his pay cheque from ESPN, etc.

I am, therefore, likely to take what Mr Walker says with a pinch of salt!

Re some media standing up for truth.

I’m amazed that one of the newspaper hasn’t so far. The numbers of Celtic supporters who shun the red-tops because of their bias would make capturing a portion of that market attractive.

  6. sftb,

Any statement that would differ from Walker’s ” inside line” would elicit the Mandy Rice Davies response.

It is getting too close to major decisions for football for Celtic to say anything.

Let’s see how the next few weeks play out without reacting to the ever more desperate spouting and taunting from the MSM.

Brian Wilson’s comments on the OB legislation indicates that is still on Celtic’s agenda

  7. Lots of points to respond to. Sorry if I miss anyone out

TBJ- Apologies, you are quite right. Keep pulling me up everyy time I make that error.

TET- You were more right than I was in predicting how this would play out. I keep hoping for some administrative integrity but I am saddened there has been no appeal from all those wronged clubs who were thrown out of competitions for more innocent mistakes than those made by Rangers. The rest of Scottish football seems somewhat cowed by their “official victories” in the FTT and LNS cases

TT- I agree it is the SFA and the SPL who must make the pronouncement on sporting integrity.

EK Bhoy- Your point is well made and it is one I considered. At the very least, Andy would be forced into a defence or a denial of his statement. Every Celtic fan would be able to point to an official statement from the club that said Andy Walker knows nothing officially about our views. The alternative is that the media’s narrative takes hold and is accepted. When do we fight back?

I won’t answer your question. Andy Walker has no credentials to be allowed near the Celtic Board. However, can I ask do you have confidence that Mr. Bankier would not make a careless mistake similar to his Tartan Army comment when speaking with journos and pundits like Andy?

Have picked a 25 man staring pool (based on today’s 25 man Euro criteria).

Have narrowed it down to a starting 11-14 (who would play/ including bench). The why – justifying who would play in order to win a league versus the mix to progress in Europe – is giving me problems.

It’s writing the justification part – as a comparison to today’s required line-ups for the reader that’s vexing me!

  10. Way of topic.

I have about 1 million Iraqi dinera, and the banks here don’t want to exchange it, a friend was in London the past few days, and same story, she tried three different places and none were willing to take them.

It’s no much, about 500 quid, but it’s a lot to the young wan who owns them.

Question is, is there anywhere I can exchange them for her, willing to take much less than their worth just to get rid, and she needs the cash as she is leaving Spain to start a new life in scotland.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Btw, Tommy is not a Glasgow Taxi driver as constantly reported, he is in fact a Glasgow Private Hire driver! or as the public now erroneously refer to them, “private hack”

Surely the difference is between Hackey carriage taxi driver and Private Hire. They are both taxi drivers.

They are indeed not both Taxi drivers!

A Taxi is a vehicle with a taxi light and which is legally insured for public hire, either at a rank or in the street, where the driver has undergone a topographical test by his licensing authority and is issued with a Taxi Drivers License.

A private hire is insured for private hire, not public hire, has not been required to take a topographical test, and is only bookable by pre-booking via a telephone call to it’s base.

This driver is issued with a Private Hire Drivers License.

They are not allowed to use the word Taxi or indeed the word Cab anywhere on their vehicles or on their adverts. Therefore most are called XYZ Cars Etc.

All in the interests of public safety,so that inebriated young ladies do not flag down any private car by mistake par example!

I liked the Brian Wilson line in the Scotsman and it is welcome to see a Board member peeping above the parapet for a change.

I am interested as to why you feel waiting for a few weeks is going to see any improvement in this narrative. The policy of “do not interrupt your enemies…” was one that I was wholly buying into pre the FTT verdict and pre the LNS verdict. In both cases our enemy’s errors are now hard to detect.

It seems we are being led to believe that financial hardship will see them ended again soon. I am less sure. With a final defeat of the Tax case (if that is what happens and it will be a lot more than a few weeks before we know)allied to a clean bil of health from the SFA/SFL and SPL, thanks to LNS, they are an attractive proposition for more serious backers to become involved, paying off Charles and Craigy and Ticketus for their troubles. Yes we will get 3 to 5 years head start because of their weakness but, they will be back at full health before we have overtaken their title record (which the SFA will present officially as 53 and a half , not 0 as it should be).

So what is giving you confidence? Cos I could sure do with a dose.

I have presented Andy Walker in his full light, warts and all. The attempt to portray him as fully a creature of the establishment media does not hold up. He is the only one on Radio Clyde who calls them a new club. That puts hom on the opposite side of a lot of people. Everything else he says is suspect but he is far from presenting the simple pro-Sevco narrative that Delahunt, keevins, Dalziel and BFDJ parrot.

Andy Walker claimed that he knew of two Celtic board members who thought sevco should be fasttracked into the top tier, they didn’t want to say that though!

Is Andy telling the truth? Does he have the juice on what board members think? Is this a psychic Andy who also knows that supporters CAN afford to attend every game but are choosing not to because there’s no sevco?

Andy & De-ell are doing what they’re told, ssb is coming under pressure from advertisers to halt declining listener numbers, phone-ins have had their day, it doesn’t matter how many ‘new’ callers you get. (real radio didn’t hesitate to pull the plug).

Listening to their desperate pleas is a Real turn-off.

Looks like bill miller’s due diligence paid off! Sevco on the event horizon of a particularly nasty black hole. Chuckles and his travelling freak show is about to disappear up it’s own bottom line. Cue CW to pick the bones out.

    “The provisional Celtic supporter.”

It is a nice dig and it works on 2 levels, I see.

However, surely the “unconditional” Celtic supporter is a mythical creature and we all have some boundaries.

What if we changed our name to Glasgow Old Firm- are you still unconditional?

Played in Blue strips?-are you still unconditional?

    Instituted a Catholics only policy?

  19. Looking for info

Im looking to book a golf outing and thinking of Caldwell GC is there anybody who has played it recently and can give info if its in good nick, had an outing there what its like. Or if anybody knows of a hidden gem under fifty quid for golf and food about 45 mins tops from Glasgow

  20. SFTB, I don’t listen to SSB and giving them any credence supplies the oxygen they need. Let’s face it what else would these @rseholes have to talk about if they don’t encourage the feeble-minded to phone in about the zombies. It is in their interest to spread lies and misinformation, it keeps them in a job. You see, nothing to discuss means no need for SSB and its useless pundits. These people would have a problem holding down a job in the real world. My youngest Bhoy listens to it and gets upset by the pash they spout and I tell him that at the end of the day it is pash. Well, so far we have seen sporting integrity provide a greater distribution of the silverware in Scotland. Sure I want Celtic to win everything but we would all get bored with that. You cannot truly celebrate victory until you have tasted defeat.

  21. crushed nuts

I really want to believe that the Event Horizon is due to take place.

However, the illicitly obtained info from Sandaza confirms that Chuckles has the confidence to keep increasing player wage expenditure year on year.

Now either that is a plan worthy of Bialystock and Bloom designed to accelerate their demise as they win money by liquidating Rangers. Kind of begs the question of why they did not liquidate earlier if that is their plan. Why run the risk of anyone taking a closer look by running the club for longer than you need.

However, if your plan was to buy cheap and sell large once the risk elements (FTT, tax case appealm and LNS were removed), you have had the cooperation of all the Scottish football establishment (with Celtic, at best, silent, at worst, colluding) to have them preserve history, avoid striped titles and still play at Ibrox with dumped debt and history intact and back in the top league within a minimum of 3 years.

It’s all guesswork as to the future. How have your predictions panned out so far?

    Praecepta

Good luck with the justifications. I just made some arbitrary rules and then broke them for my favourites. At that rate I have the makings of a Scottish football administrator.

You are preaching to the converted with your last post.

I am not extolling the honesty and consistency of msm and Scottish football pundits. I am querying why we remain silent when people purport to speak for us in these channels. i have been consistent in saying I am not looking fo constant rebuttals or for our Board to make their views plain on all matters Sevco.

All I want is that they state they have made no official comment and certainly not to any newspaper journo, or radio and TV pundit. Then they can go back to being silent for a bit.

If it is ok for Brian Wilson to make strong statements about the offensive Behaviour Bill, why cannot we make the strong statement that there are no unofficial leaks of the Celtic Board’s view, only Official statements which will be made to our fans first and not to the media ahead of that.

Don’t think I am asking for a lot.

  25. It’s a personal choice and a bridge I hope I never have to cross. But unless, there is further reaction and a strategy from Celtic in the aftermath of LNS scandal, and it becomes a business as normal situation, it will be the time for many like me to retire, my season ticket and catch up with Celtic, on an as and when basis.

I’ll always be a Celtic supporter but simply couldn’t countenance Celtic v Them again, the Celtic board are away ahead of us, surveys etc, and know that between the cheating, the Offensive Behaviour Bill, and a continuous recession, that football, and any 40,000 season ticket base, is holed below the water line.
