Apologise, validate feelings, put tickets on sale

176

“We are truly sorry you have not been able to join us at Celtic Park and sorry we have not been able to deliver the further success which your support has deserved. We understand how difficult this year has been for you and understand the disappointment you have felt, it is something shared by us all at the Club.”

Paragraph two of the season ticket renewal email sent to fans yesterday contained two apologies and a validation of disappointment felt at the last year’s performance, a consistent theme from the club since wheels started to spin off the wagon last autumn.

Despite delaying Renewal Day by five weeks beyond the usual issuance date, solely due to the fact that we do not have a manager, the act was triggered without a change in this key status.  For a short period, anyway, tickets sold will be a faith-based purchase.  Aren’t they always, though?

When I reviewed the dates we appointed managers since Lou Macari joined in October 1993, the 1 June stood out: we have made as many appointments on that date (two) than before it, in the last 28 years.  I have no idea what that is, although you have to suspect it is something to do with money.

But still, why send renewals out now?  There are pragmatic reasons.  People need time to make purchase decisions and ticket office staff need time to process thousands of enquiries.  Can you imagine the number of tickets lost in the last 14 months, on top of regular issues?  The window for all of this is one month, tight, by historical standards.

Then there is the churn to deal with.  Tickets not renewed will be offered to the waiting list, accepted, or reoffered after another period.  Department heads will have advised their final execution date for tickets, retail stock and staffing and club broadcasting decisions months ago.  You can be sure 26 May was the ticket office’ deadline.

If by next week, 1 June overtakes the entire month of May as the mode value when Celtic appoint a manager, it will look like things are under control again.  But don’t quote me on it!

  1. The Red Flag or the Red Indian….. Howe has it came to this?

Masonic symbols All around the World….. including the Indians from the West.

Celtic should have been in the hands of the Supporters after Fergus. If a Pandemic doesn’t shake thinking. Nothing will. The shares initiative was an excellent idea and a real bridge builder after a calamitous Season.

For what its worth. I don’t think E H is capable or wants the gig.

    Still no manager

    Still the Howe believers believe.

Your deadline is Tuesday 1st June.

There is no remotely conceivable contractual basis for believing that he cannot be announced with effect from 1/6/2021.

If he is not announced by that date the club need to come clean.

I suspect you’re right. There may well be news on 1st June.

Otherwise, this farce will become a tragedy

The news about Harkin is, I hope, positive for us.

However we are clinging on to every tweet, crumb of information.

Poor show yet again from the powers that be putting us through this after the car crash season we have had to endure.

Season 2020/21 was my 60th season as a Celtic supporter. My first game was Celtic 4 Hibernian 3 on 16th December 1961. Johnny Divers scored a hat-trick and instantly became my hero. I was 8 years old.

I decided 2 or 3 years ago that season 2020/21 would be my last as a season ticket holder. This decision was prompted by health issues and my impending retirement.

I had fully expected to sign-off in a ’10-in-a-row’ blaze of glory, but sadly it wasn’t to be.

My season ticket costs a mere £331 so I can understand supporters baulking at £666, especially where additional STs are held by other family members.

A couple of my match-day companions have been trying to coax me into one more renewal and with the expectation of a new manager, I have to admit I was swithering.

Even my good lady was telling me that come August Saturday mornings I would be twitching at the thought of staying at home while the Celtic play, although I suspect that over the years she enjoyed the quiet and the solitude while I was ‘at the gemme’ and away from under her feet.

I was seriously considering my options over several weeks, until last Wednesday when renewals were opened in the absence of a new manager, or a simple explanation as to why that should be.

I will definitely NOT be renewing.

My difficult decision was made easy by the club’s apparent lack of consideration for my 60 previous years, not to mention the many thousands of supporters of all ages and families who are expected to fork out thousands for what is quite simply a product of unknown quality and quantity.

It saddens me that it has to end this way. I shall continue to cheer on the Celtic from the armchair and the pub. My son will be a father for the first time in July and he too has decided not to renew.

For me it truly is the end of an era.

    Hail Hail.

  8. I haven`t got a clue as to whether or not Eddie Howe will be our next Manager. I am , though, reasonably confident that IF he is appointed, there will be quite a stampede on here to say `Too late.`.

Brilliant post, sums up the way a lot of us are feeling about the season gone by and the shocking way we have been treated by a board that is so far removed from the ordinary supporter.

  11. Reading through my email from Celtic about my Season Ticket, this wee snippet caught my eye.

“Our Club was born in adversity, raised in defiance and defined by no other.”

‘Born in adversity’? OK, check! ‘Raised in defiance’? OK, check. ‘Defined by no other’? Wait a minute, am I missing something here? Not entirely honest, eh?

  12. TOM MCLAUGHLIN on 28TH MAY 2021 8:44 AM

A reasonably expressed and understandable viewpoint. I am lucky that I can somehow separate The Board and The Team. It may well be cognitive dissonance at play but it does mean, Covid permitting, I will be in 106 next season.I am looking forward to it.

Hi ONIL – I missed that – what’s the news (assume it is a hint rather than a confimation?)

Tom McLaughlin – in the words of the philosopher – don’t let the Bastards get you down.

Stick with it. To take back a phrase stolen by the corporate – we ARE more than a footbal club. It’s in your mind, in your history, in our shared history.

Management is temporary – Celtic is permanent.

I’m with HOT SMOKED – ignore the Board (as they ignore you), protest about them, fight against them (or agree with them if you like) – but separate them from the team – support the team!!!

  19. I posted weeks ago Howe was not in the running.

Looks like someone who is still busy, perhaps managing a team in the Euro’s.

I’ve also been told it aint the Belgian pair…………………but might be one of them.
