Armstrong, Convicted Dave, playing with fire

1051

News that we are after a second Dundee United midfield player will prove popular, Stuart Armstrong has been tipped for progress for a couple of years.  He is another Ronny Deila-type player, a strong runner who can get up and down the field.  As usual, I’ll reserve judgement until we sign him, and I’ve had a chance to watch him properly.

You have to admire his balls.  Dave King assertion that a conviction for tax fraud is a “favourable settlement” goes beyond parody.  I’m unsure if some PR flop put those words in his head or if he concocted the notion by himself, but just as you cannot shine a turd, it is impossible to spin an undisputed criminal conviction.  He was convicted of criminal offenses.  If this is your measure of favourable, your standards are truly deplorable.

I fail to see why King even is discussing such matters with the media, unless he’s currying favour with the Daily Record.  These assertions will make no difference whatsoever to the stock market, or any reputable nominated adviser, nor will it hold sway with the SFA.  It is also a futile battleground.  In the event King gains control of newco Rangers, he doesn’t need to be a director to exercise de facto control, Paul Murray has been his man for years.  Mike Ashley is not a director, and he owns less than 9% of the club, but he appears to be able to dictate play quite comfortably.

Without a trace of irony, King told the Record: “The enthusiasm that this board adopts to ‘media management’ and its failure to act in the interest of shareholders and other stakeholders is exactly why they should be jettisoned”.

Trying hard to avoid the merest whiff of media management himself, King then added, “History will judge this board as one of the worst the club has ever had. There is not one individual who puts the club above personal interest.”

There you have it folks, our pal Dave is a man you can trust.

Just as the Newco board didn’t have enough on their plate, interim manager Kenny McDowell tendered his notice, although in true ‘Rangers’ tradition, he’s not going without a pay-off.  It’s an added vote of no confidence the regime could do without.  They now face the embarrassing prospect of allowing an interim to remain in control as a lame duck, or put a second manager on gardening leave.

Mike Ashley’s prospects of a successful turnaround look bleak in the face of such uniform and orchestrated antagonism.  I wonder if he’s the kind of man who takes manipulation lightly?  If not, the manipulators are playing with fire.

Good Morning CQN, hope blog just quiet and not broken.

Safe journey to everyone travelling today and here’s hoping for a decent crowd and a great result tonight to get us back to the top of the league.

  4. My opinion ,based on snippets of information.

Charles Green was desperate for Sevco to remain in the top league.

Celtic were also keen for this to happen.

Celtic wanted Rangers stripped of unfairly won titles.

Charles green would have gone along with this if they were allowed to enter in the top league.

This was a key condition of any agreement to strip titles.

When the lower league clubs voted to make them start at the bottom ,this plan was scuppered.

Celtic were put in a position where they could never comment, but they wanted Oldco stripped of titles.

the day is looming for the SFA versus Dave KingSpiers on Sport

To this day you still hear comments from certain Rangers fans in total denial of Dave King’s law-breaking in South Africa.

Such as, there is no court conviction hanging over him.

Or, there was no concession of guilt on Dave King’s part.

Or, he has not been convicted on tax crimes, because the State dropped the charges.

I’ve read it all in recent days.

I’ve even heard it being said that SARS, far from bringing King to court, instead agreed that they had called his tax affairs wrong in South Africa, and had actually apologised to him.

Before we get to the Scottish FA and decisions they look like having to make about King and Rangers, let’s just be clear on his history of financial crimes in his adopted homeland.

In August 2013 King was convicted on 41 counts of breaking the South African tax laws. Each count, the court recorded, incurred either a two-year prison sentence or a financial penalty.

King, as part of a plea-and-sentence agreement, not unreasonably decided to stump up rather than do time. As part of his guilty plea he paid back circa 700m South African rand – at the time equivalent to roughly £50m – in illegally avoided taxes.

His High Court conviction that day in Johannesburg stood, and it still stands. King had broken the law on multiple counts. It needn’t actually stalk him for the rest of his life. The point is, it just happened.

King made a pretty remarkable comment this week. He stated that he had achieved a “favourable settlement” with the tax authorities in South Africa in regard to his crimes.

He certainly called that one right. At first SARS were reported to be chasing him for around 3.3 billion SA rand (at the time somewhere above £200m). In the end he had to pay back around 700 million rand. It was actually a fantastic result for King.

And so to the imminent SFA business. Stewart Regan and his organisation face a very awkward – and potentially embarrassing – situation with King, who looks almost certain to win his long quest for power at Rangers

Over the next few weeks there is going to be much ducking and diving in terms of a hoovering-up of Rangers shares. All of that done, though, it is hard to see King being thwarted in his designs on Rangers ownership and power.

So what do the SFA do? In essence, they have to apply their infamous “fit and proper” criteria to King, should he wish to become a club director.

These regulations are in place, frankly, to stop Scottish football being invaded by dodgy geezers – and there are plenty of them afoot just now. Ironically, doesn’t Rangers FC know this better than anyone?

“Fit and proper” at the SFA is not an exact test, and nor is it inflexible. Crucially – and it is hard to overstate this bit – there is wiggle room. The dreaded phrase “at the SFA’s discretion” comes in to play.

In other words, with King, anything could happen.

Article 10 of the SFA’s own guidelines, on the surface, makes it pretty plain. Scottish football clubs have to offer full disclosure on its directors, and these include things the SFA or any other reasonable society would find undesirable.

Helpfully, the SFA sets out its ‘dislikes’ in the context of its approval of any person, such as King, who seeks to become a club director. Such as:

    – Bankruptcy

    – Previously being disqualified as a director

    – Any illegal acts or convictions

    – Being previously a director of a club which suffered insolvency

There are plenty more of these – the SFA itself says the list is “not exhaustive”. The criteria are merely set out in order to keep football clean.

It must be perfectly obvious to anyone that, on at least two of these counts, King fails badly. His tax conviction in South Africa is bad enough, let alone that he was a director of Rangers FC in the years immediately leading to the club’s liquidation in 2012.

Here is the thing for the SFA: if King’s crime-sheet does not fail to meet fit and proper, then what sort does?

Indeed, what is the point of listing these criteria if, in effect, they are not applied?

This is going to be a very ugly scene. You can almost feel the heat, the fear, of the SFA from here. Rangers fans want King in. Others around the country are awaiting – maybe expecting – an SFA laughing stock.

Scottish football’s governing body faces a big test of its credibility over King, and I’m not convinced it is going to meet it

Have you stopped and considered that, Martin O’Neill might have been got at – just like Neil?

Did you post an open letter to Dermot Desmond when he said that -“Rangers are a

wonderful, historic club and the sooner their back in the same league as Celtic, the better the game will be.”

Did you post an open letter to the Celtic board when, after being shafted by the LNS enquiry….their response was – “We’re surprised.”

Better still…the ‘bored’ didny say anything, they left it to Neil Lennon to host the questions at his Friday press conference and, it was he who was left to say – “We’re surprised.”

On conclusion….the huns have shafted everybody and, anybody out of £140 million and – off the top of my head…3 years CL-money £60 million that the huns cheated from us on the back of the ‘honest-mistakes’ whilst, the Celtic ‘bored’ looked the other way!!!

Did you post an open letter to the Celtic board for that?

Surely the ‘boreds’ in-action re: all of the above and more, is the real reason that, not one penny of the £140 million will be paid back coz of the Celtic ‘boreds’ collusion and, their carefully planted ‘lackeys’ like you will spin the ‘boreds’ smoke-screens and continue to dupe all the easily kidded-on-happy-clapping-retarded-seals who – in the main – constitute the Celtic support of today and its for – that – very reason that I fear the LCSF v’s the huns in terms of the, potential for huns violence as, there aint no JUNGLE types of Celtic supporters there to do the battling. Celtics fan-base has been detrimentally neutered by the enforcement of ‘Cromwellian’ laws that have been cooked-up with the ‘unseen fenian hands’ of the Celtic ‘bored’ helping to stir this poisonous brew. Will you post an open letter to them?

If Ashley has all the assets tied up as collateral for loans he already has given and presumably is about to give i.e. £10 m for Ibrox and MP , then I still can’t get my head around how anyone is going to finance the operation going forward. The MIBS can make honest mistakes but they can’t meet the monthly massive running costs!

  26. Graham Spiers is one of the few that has recognised that print journalism is no longer about news, it simply can’t respond quickly enough, it’s about opinion pieces. Now I don’t care who you are, it’s very difficult to give an opinion that’s not filtered through your own prejudices without it being bland and boring.

If you approach all his writing on that basis, then it’s less problematic. What the MSM lacks is a balance in sense of Celtic (or even more non Rangers) centric senior writers. However, as we continue to be the main force in Scotland I think this will happen.

Yep, for them (journalists) it’s about preserving their jobs …….

  30. Excellent win for ICT last night means they are 3 points behind Aberdeen but not being quoted as title contenders??? Strange one that.

They have sort of sneaked up on the rails and John Hughes deserves a lot of credit. People have been talking the last few days about who would fit into our team from Dundee United and Aberdeen. A few players have been mentioned and obviously GMS has been tied up on a pre-contract but who would get in our team from ICT? Nobody I can think of. John Hughes deserves huge credit for their league position with a team of youngsters and journeymen.

The top of the table is tightening up. My prediction has always been that these teams will take points off each other. I think that the title race will be won at a canter anyway at least 10 points by Celtic but these teams dropping points can take the pressure off us a bit and allow us to rest players if required for the Inter Milan matches or any future EL games (fingers crossed).

A win tonight for Celtic is huge. Aberdeen are then playing catch up and the pressure is put on them. It’s harder to win when you are under the microscope and put under pressure like that. Get to the top and stay there. We will still have a game in hand and winning that gives us a wee cushion.

The transfer window is still open and I fully expect Celtic to try and offload players before we shell out a decent sum for any new ones. I read Derk is back training. I expect him to feature this month. We can;t offload him if nobody has seen him play. Could he actually take his chance and be the player we all thought he might be when we signed him? I’m not holding my breath on that one. The boy has never shown any heart and if he has a few decent performances I hope we can get him off the wage bill.

IF Celtic can get GMS in before the window closes, Armstrong, a CB for cover and the Guidetti saga resolved either way it’s a decent window for us.

If we get anymore in than that then it’s a bonus. I am undecided on the Darren Fletcher rumours. I like the thought of an experienced player but I am not sure the boy still has it after his illness. An experienced CB as cover for VVD and Denayer is a must for me. Getting GMS this window is also important. The Bhoy will either play against us a few times possibly in a cup final before the season ends or be dropped just get him in now.

Guidetti should be given a deadline to make a decision and then we move on. I hope Ronny has learned from the Commons saga. Talking to a player for months and months doesn;t work. Put a deal down, set a deadline and if he doesn;t sign shake hands and say good luck son. We we negotiate for months and months is beyond me. If he doesn;t get the offer elsewhere that he fancies he will be begging to sign the deal first laid out. Nobody is bigger than Celtic and if we put a deal down we think is fair and the player doesn;t sign leave it there and move on. We have seen with Samaras and now Commons that wasting time trying to tie them up and then they decide to leave anyway does nothing for the club. It doesn;t put our negotiation skills in a good light either. It is embarrassing to hear Ronny say we are still talking to Kris. What does he want? What are we offerring? It’s not difficult. If he wants 2 years and we offer 1 year he is not going to sign it. He will keep talking to the club and then just leave on a Bosman at the end of the season. Put the deadline down and if he doesn’t sign then personally I would sell him in this window and move on.

Hopefully Ronny has his eye on another few Bosman-Pre-Contract moves. These deals are the best fit for the club as we only pay out a signing on fee and wages. We have done reasonably well out of it in the past.

It’s an exciting few weeks ahead. Few big games and a title race at the minute that keeps the football exciting. Hopefully Celtic can get that cushion which can alow us to concentrate on the EL and the cup in the weeks to come. The treble is on and would be only the 2nd one I have ever seen us win. Also a wee run in Europe would help the co-efficient points. We have not been flying this season but we are still in the pot for all competitions. Let’s see if Ronny can get us over the line. I have said for months this is a big window. Players in limbo are no good though. Anyone unsure of staying should be sorted pronto and we move on. We have lost better players and got stronger and will do so again.

A good day Saturday, both the result and all credit to Hamilton FC for their welcome to Jay. Also for their subsequent statement praising both sets of fans….good luck to them on their 10p promotion this week end…Their Chairman put Radio Clyde on their places Monday night.

Looking forward to tonight’s game with the chance to go back top of the table with a game on hand….will be a cold night mind you…

As Rangers International FC continue to embarrass themselves and former original team members and directors make ludicrous statements by the minute it’s not hard to see how this sideshow will end….One thing they’ll make it to the cup game. I’m giving that game a miss!

Anyway life’s good for a change…..youngest settled in new school, darling daughter got two offers for uni and a full time post in civil service (after being made redundant Christmas Eve) with her driving test to come next week after and eldest plodding away. We’re selling our home of 18 years as we’re running out of space…still intend to be living within walking distance of Celtic Park….afternoon I’ve still got three bottles of Chateauneuf du Pape to enjoy and three days holiday this week…great planning!

so waiting to see what movement there is in transfer window and looking forward to the Inter game and CQN11.
