  1. We have a bit of a problem with Lustig,IMO.Have been saying it,but he plays well in the SPFL and its forgotten.I dont think he can cut it at this level anymore.Hate saying it,I love the guy,but sentiment wont get us anywhere.

  2. South Of Tunis on

    Napoli ?

At their best ( concentrating and not thinking that a football game can be won on points for artistic merit ) Napoli would be a big problem for whatever Pot 1 / Pot 2 team they get . At their profligate ,messy worst they could be a gift of a win for a Pot 4 team.. .It’s the way they are

Far from their best in both legs v Nizza . 4 goals scored .

  3. Interesting that each one of our Pot 3 rivals ( Sevilla, Olympiakos, Napoli and Liverpool ) all won their away playoff leg. Had we a little more poise from Griffiths, and a fit Boyata and Simunovitch, I think we would have done the same.

  4. i also feel we have a problem with ML , his legs have gone, also have my worries with SB at this level, your passing has to be spot on , our captain’s passing continually is way to short.

Did any of them win 5-0 at home?

  6. Apart from a 20 minute spell in the two games we dominated. Even then that spell was caused by losing 2 goals in a minute, which caused the momentum to swing, after we had decided to down tools as job done. Even further then that the 3 goals they scored in the second half were mistakes from Brown, Biton (twice) and Gordon. The first was a deflected shot that was going off target.

At half time tonight, we should have been well ahead. We scored 8 goals over the 180 minutes. 16 shots on goal tonight. An away game in Europe with 16 shots at goal.

    Job done and easily.

  7. What was different from previous collapses is that we regained the game and composure. If Griffiths had scored before their 4th we would have not lost that game.

We were in no danger of going out. Well it looked that way from behind my couch…..

  8. i'vehadtochangemyname on

8 goals – amazing ! a serious achievement – obvious things for br to work on and a great game

Sounds like I missed another brilliant match!

Delighted to be through, and still hoping to get out of Pot 4.

Napoli and Seville through,Liverpool favourites to do so too. Is a defeat for Sporting Lisbon our best chance? Not seen that one mentioned.

Mik Lustig is the most experienced international player in our team. I love him. I can see he is slowing a bit. Tony Ralston is our future, but Big Mik still has more.

If you prefer a match where we lose 4-3 to losing 1-0 away, you would have loved the game tonight, like I did. :)

Olivier Ncham was exemplary. 100% perfect display. Future French Superstar.

  12. Although I did have a flutter at 4-1, I never thought we were in danger of going out. Bitton is not a central defender at this level and I would place no blame on the inexperienced Ajer. We desperately need a class centre half!

He was awful tonight, there are no two ways about it. The defending at the 4th goal was pub level. It’s been noticeable that he hasn’t been getting forward as much recently, i think it’s been a tactical decision to leave 3 at the back with KT bombing on but i wonder if BR worries about him being exposed. Gamboa although decent isn’t the answer and Ralston needs 50 games under his belt before we can judge him properly.

  14. theBHOYfromU.N.C.L.E on

Big Mikael loves Celtic …………..not his fault he was playing with a weakened centre defence away in a tough arena, with solid CB’s and Kieran he’d be fine……….no worries.

  15. The whole defence was rotten tonight by the look of the highlights I saw, can’t say too much as I didn’t see the whole game..

I think getting through with the injuries we’ve had is quite an achievement in itself..

Well done to the players and the manager..

    Roll on Thursday.

Hope we get Basel so I can put a few faces to the names on here:))

  16. ML was very poor tonight.

He has consistently been a weak link in our defence for the last two seasons.

Not sure if it started off being psychological but now it also physical.

He runs as if the elastic is going to snap.

Consequently we need to work on the RB position.

AR is as raw as sushi — has potential but will need more work than KT.

Lots to do — hopefully it is recognised and help is on the way.

  17. DD, we are both fine mucker, thanks for asking, you too I trust. Likewise for us, Lisbon was a magic trip which I would always have regretted missing had we not gone. Great people and memories for a lifetime. See you on Sat G. How good to back in the CL. Off to scratcher now, got some business in the morning.

Our two centre backs played 30 yards apart all match. They were an accident waiting to happen. I do not blame Niro and Kris. Two midfield players lost in central defence tonight. Not a clue how to play the role away in Europe. We survived though, and the weans will learn from their bad experience.

  19. On a pleasant Glasgow spring evening before a crowd of 51,000 a young Celtic side (the” aye it’s Celtic Celtic that’s the team for me” one with Charlie Gallagher replacing the injured John Divers) beat the first team to record NIAR and also founded in 1888 in the first leg of their own first appearance in a European semi final 3-0.

We as usual in typical Celtic fashion confounded our critics, we had finished 3rd in the League behind deidco and the templars, although we were top goalscorers and had a better GD, same in the League Cup sections and losing in the quarters of the SC at hades and yet here we were in the semis of the ECWC beating our old friends Basle, Dynamo Zagreb and Slovan Bratislava enroute amassing16 goals for the loss of just 2.

It looked as of this young Celtic team pre the Big Mhan were finally blossoming as apart from a Jinky opener and Stevie double we also had missed chances by the latter plus Charlie G and Chopper, in fact if my memory serves me well as I stood in the hun end that night wee Luggy missed a penalty. I can still hear my da bemoaning that we had allowed that “bhoy” tae take a penalty, FGS there were 5 players younger than him in the side.

MTK hadn’t actually set the heather ablaze on their run with wins against Slavia Sofia, Motor Zwickau and a replay to Fenerbahce with only 8 goals for and 5 against. That night at the People’s Stadium, now aptly named the Ferenc Puskas Stadium, a meager crowd of 10,000 showed up.

And so we crowded round our wireless in a wee hoose down by the Bonnie Banks confident of a trip tae the final in the soon tae be ill fated Heysel Stadium a couple of weeks later.

History will tell us that Bob and his Corinthian style Celtic only know how to attach tactics cost us a place against Sporting Lisbon but on reflection at 1 down in the first half both Jinky and the Bear had goals disallowed for offside and in the second half after they went further ahead early doors while not doing a Dukla 3 years later we kept on attacking and lost a couple of more goals.

There was a thought among the support that the Austrian ref had been influenced by the Iron Curtain side, which may have more relevance now when 3 years later when an Italian ref sent off Chopper and disallowed a Bear goal in Kiev.

Anyway tonight was not like that, it was more like a year ago tomorrow in Beersheba when I vacationing on a sandbar out in the Atlantic hid behind a deck chair as we almost squandered another lead in which we had scored 5 goals in the 1st leg.

BTW the team that played in both legs in Budapest contained 10 players who were on the lorry that drove round Parkheid on May 26 with the Big Cup, the 11th had last been seen running round the Estadio after the final whistle waving a tricolour.

  20. One other positive with ON joining the club has been the improvement in the form of EK.

Very unlucky that he got injured 2 weeks ago as his form had improved immensely in that game over his previous outings.

Got the impression he had re-modelled his game to copy ON.

Just an observation but a big improvement.

We will be a better team when the development squad model their game on him instead of SB and JF as currently seems to be the case.

Two teams I hope we don’t draw. Barcelona, because I’m sick of them. Chelsea because they’re bad news and a potential PR disaster.

Other than that, bring them all on.

TTR, I’ll be in Coias on sat before the game if you want to pick up your stuff.

P.S. Kev J deary me, me, me, me, me, me, me and on and on. ha ha.

  23. You know , I would not be the least bit surprised , if joso was for the off . Had he not been just starting to comeback from a lengthy injury ,I believe he would have been at Torino . I rate the big man highly ,and if he went it would be a huge blow to the club . Imho had he been playing tonight , we would not have lost 4 goals . With regards billy Davis for rangers . Anyone listening to BBC sport on the way home from killie on Saturday , would have heard Daryll broadfoot begging Sevco to bring him in , as he was one of the best tacticians in football , and he would have the rangers challenging celtic . Did he get the boot from the SFA .

Didn’t big Jozo dick us about before eventually signing?

I’d hope there’s nothing of substance in the pish I’ve read about his imminent departure. The reason given by RS this afternoon was that Brendan did not want to risk him on an artificial surface. Is he made from balsa wood or something equally as weak?

That’s how he’ll look when he does leave the Doomdome:))

A broken man, he’ll spend the rest of life in Portugal mumbling “but we’re still the peepul, right?” The nurse will wipe the gunk from his sad coupon and shake her head saying ” I don’t know what those orange bar stewards did to that poor man”
