Axing the Act one vote at a time

849

I was at primary school during the 1979 devolution referendum.  It’s fair to say many in the Celtic community were suspicious of the SNP due to the hostile attitudes some of the party leadership had to the Irish diaspora in their midst.

Fresh blood brought change to the SNP in the 1980s, there were even overtures to Irish nationalism.  Alex Salmond cemented these changes, broadened the appeal of the party towards new and multi-generation immigrants, and asserted the SNP’s multi-faith credentials.  He also became close friends with disgraced Cardinal O’Brien (which is no reflection on Mr Salmond).

At the height of his political powers Salmond appears to have overreached.  Something would be done about men shouting at football games.  From now on only certain flavours of nationalism would be favoured, acceptable, perhaps even legal.  MSP Christine Graham let the Scottish Parliament know, the problem was that Celtic fans were not acting illegally, so the law had to change.

The Axe the Act candidate in today’s Glasgow City Council, Govan, by-election, Thomas Rannachan has brought the consequences of Salmond’s largess to his door.  The SNP are defending the seat but one year out from the battle Salmond really needs to win, his shoddy attack on football fans is set to undermine him.  As an independent Rannachan may not win, but he has put the First Minister on the back foot.

George Ryan’s funeral will take place at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Glasgow, at 10:00 on Monday. All are welcome.

Apologies, mate. Missed yer reply re sleep. In my defence…

I was probably thinking about it at the time!

Simple answer is when I don’t have to work, and don’t have time to drink.

(A reply guaranteed to have at least one sister giving me peters later!)

The nightshift,or Moonhowlers Convention,as it became known, used to be much more stimulating, mainly because of the stimulants many of us had taken.

Not so much now,but I for one have fond memories of the outrage exhibited by people posting during breakfast. Having cleared the screen of cornflakes first…..

You seem well informed about dear old Oz on one hand (budgie smugglers, wedding expenses),but have strange views about Tony Abbott and his political outlook.Quite a number of his colleagues are unhappy that some of his policies are leftish ( more generous benefits for nursing mums than the previous Labor Party). In addition,he spends one week each year assisting in remote aboriginal communities and initiated a charitable fundraising cycling event for politicians called polipedal. Not quite what you would expect from a redneck racist,as he has been described on C.Q.N.

No evidence that he is anything other than a decent man.

You`ll be happy to hear that his determined efforts to reduce the drowning toll from “asylum seekers” on leaky boats are already making a significant difference.

Perhaps after the tragic drownings off the coast of Italy last week some of his critics will see his efforts to “stop the boats” as sensible and humanitarian.

    And perhaps not.

Well done to all those who campaigned and voted for Thomas Rannachan at Govan, and maybe if he had been standing for the “Axe The Act” party (or a similar self-explanatory title) he would have doubled his vote?

There is a need for a registered political party that can bring focus on this issue at any future by, or general elections.

  17. Morning,

Labour won the Govan by-election. Delighted the SNP lost, I hope the votes for the Axe The Act candidate put a dent into them.

  18. Asonofdan – pity it was just a council election. Historically they’re not really a reflection of how the vote will go in Parliamentary elections.

  19. Hamiltontim is praying for Oscar on

    Good morning to you all.

So Labour won the Govan election, ole Ernie will be pleased.

  20. Isn’t the 20% turnout in Govan low even for a council election?

And in other news, how about this from the Herald?

“LABOUR and Tory councillors have launched a bid for the Union flag to replace the Saltire as the main symbol over a local authority’s headquarters.

The parties, who run Stirling Council in coalition, said they were standing up for “symbols the men and women of Stirling have fought and died under for 300 years”.

They added that it was a bid to form part of the debate over next year’s independence referendum and would reflect the diversity of views in the area.”

Not sure this is the brightest of moves with next year in mind. It could be playing into the “yes” camp’s hands since it surely allows the SNP to publicly doubt their Scottishness and patriotism

I see there is no mention of the “symbols” that the people of Stirling fought and died under for many hundreds of years prior to the last 300.

and a Lab/Con coalition? Dearie me! Even Blair would not have gone to those lengths for power……not officially anyway.

Saw some debate on here yesterday about young Tont Watt and exactly who is at fault for his poor attitude, poor training and subsequent loan spell in Belgium.

Tony is a product of a get rich quick with the smallest amount of effort society which is magnified to an even greater extent with the money/lifestyle on offer to young professional footballers.

However, ultimately the blame lies with Tony. He has a duty to himself, his team mates, his manager and his profession to maxamise his talents and achieve all that he possibly can with what he has been given.

There is absolutely no doubt, never mind rumours etc, that he is not currently doing that. A real shame if he displays neither the desire or sense to turn things around.

  23. The lapdogs spin has moved up a notch today and in the land of zombie hope now springs eternal. The latest ‘king’ is saddling up his white charger and will be riding over from SA to edminston drive with a ‘warchest’ to put those pesky tims in there place. Fit & proper person, not a problem, well it is campbell who makes the call. Captain ned says king is a good ranjurs man and auld duffer jardine says he’ll need his millions to compete with us (forget everyone else they will be cast aside as the new superpower emerges).

Tomorrow, how the fat quiz show captain will spend his warchest, king has a contract in his desk drawer waiting on Messi’s signature and best team bus in the world will be replace with the best private jet in the world to fly in the world superstars that are desperate to sign for the ranjurs.

Hamiltontim. If the stories about Tony Watts fitness and poor attitude are true it is a great shame the Bhoy has the ability to be a top striker.I bet most of us Celtic supporters would have loved to be good enough to sign for the hoops and would have worked our socks off given the chance. H.H.
