Back pages filled with empty nonsense

My inbox today was full of angst at the latest series of ‘favourites’ for the manager’s job.  There are upwards of 20 journalists working on this story right now, each of whom need to push the story on every day.

No information?  Tough, write something.  Not found a single person Peter Lawwell has spoken to?  Hard lines, get Ownie’s neighbour’s granny on again, she’ll be good for a word.

Who’s fault is this?  The journos are just doing a job, the media have space to fill – and it will be filled with any type of speculation.  We all know the rules so why take the bait?

By the time the news of Neil’s resignation leaked out on Thursday Celtic’s moves were already underway.  Potential candidates jockeyed for position in the limelight for a couple of days, and for most cases they were disappointed the call didn’t arrive.  Even Henrik was talking about returning to Celtic at one point, only to reaffirm his commitment to his current employers a couple of days later.

Agents will also be busy offering their clients, Celtic will respond respectfully, but just because an agent opens a one-sided dialogue doesn’t mean meaningful dialogue is taking place.  Celtic will also speak to applicants out of courtesy.  If a former player or prominent candidate asks to be considered, you can expect Celtic to meet them, whether they have a genuine interest or not.

>90% of this activity will be fruitless.  Some of it will seep out into the public domain but it is vastly more likely that those wanting to raise their profile make the newspapers, as opposed to those Celtic have approached.

What was Houston’s remit when he was employed ?

Given Mjallby’s leaving then Lenny’s ….considering the rolling contract situation …I find them all leaving with limited notice puzzling

It’ll either be one of your preferred types or someone desperate for a job

    I prefer your option

frankmarker-a couple of team lineups to send shivers down the spine there.

Peter Houston was on the rock n roll for over a year, picking up the odd bit of work here and there as a pundit before we gave him a gig.

I suspect that finding employment post his departure from United wasn’t as straightforward as he thought & that is the reason why he isn’t rushing out the door to follow Lenny.

  5. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Twenty first, sorry my lack of typing skills showed again.

As I posted earlier the distractions for boys from fifteen to eighteen can prove too much and their team suffers.

I liked your comment about your son going to the Tribute Act to end their team.

EK Burgh 99’s have a very good team including one of Big Billy’s grandsons at centre back. They lost a number of players to pro Youth three years ago and most have returned. They are a good team to watch.

The guy who told me Neil was leaving 4 days b4 he did also told me Houston was the next manager!!

    Shudder the thot!!

  7. !!Bada Bing!! on

Houston was employed as a scout I believe, not sure if it was for new players or watching future opponents

  8. mullet and co 2 on

Peter Houston was meant to be senior scout working to John Park. Strange appointment.

    PF Ayr,

What was he employed to do ?

    —————-

    Good question.

On Radio Scotland he was there as a pundit, but used it mainly for self promotion and to keep himself in the limelight – which is fair enough.

    At Celtic ?

    Not entirely sure.

I suspect he was there because Lenny didn’t entirely trust the judgement of his current scouting network, or, he felt they needed to double check guys, or he didn’t have time to watch everyone recommended etc.

IMHO his appointment was linked to some of our failed signings this season

    Whilst you are still lurking.

Ah but many of their candidates and councillors ARE proven racists. They only evict their BNP contingent if they are too outspoken AND if they get caught being outspoken.

I sympathise that many of their voters get caught out by the same newspapers from which you derive your views that portray UKIP as a bluff no-nonsense defending -the-beleaguered-white man, anti-bent bananas party. These newspapers have a lengthy record of making up stuff about the EU (which has plenty of legitimate faults that could be addressed) and exaggerating the threats of immigration. The Yellow Press has a lengthy record on this.

However, not all of their voters are ill-informed and/or stupid. Some are decidedly more sinister than that.

But I will not accept a charge of condescension from someone who backs Putin’s Russia and sees it as the abused party in a Region where it is the Biggest of Big Brothers and the most Imperial Power in the region.

You are very good at criticising the political positions of others but refusing to admit your own. What would you do to address the problem of the racist right? Do you even see it as a problem? Or are you still fighting an imaginary cold war?

  12. The two worst teams in the premiership in Scotland get relegated into a league that the rest weren’t good enought to win bar sevco ( because they weren’t in it in the first place ) and that becomes a better league than the one they left behind ?

Is that what the half wits in the media are trying to get people to believe ?

They got relegated because they where pish in the first place, why suddenly do they become good again

  13. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

Houston always gave me the impression of being bitter towards CFC …..he also seemed to be sycophantic to Sevco et al

My impression long before he was associated with CFC …I was very surprised to find out he was a Tim ….

    Not for me

Big Billy’s grandson played in the same team as my boy at Our Lady of Lourdes, got through to the finals and Celtic didnt let him play. They lost in the Final and would definitely have won if he’d have been there. He looked a right good player, even at that age, and not full of himself

  15. Ahem, one final point. I promise.

The Mail and Express love to portray immigrants as being benefits claimants. When in Scotland, it is my good fortune to have a lot of links with the Polish community, all of them are hard working people. Few claim benefits.

Did he ask for something he did not get and then had to move because he put his existing job on the line?

We obviously live in interesting times.

  18. !!Bada Bing!! on

Not sure how much Houston had to do with Armstrong, Souttar, Gauld etc coming through at DU, but the players had a party when he left.

Twenty first, he left Celtic and was picked up by Hibs but left them or released earlier this year.

I don’t have the level of enthusiasm I once had for watching my son’s team playing. LFDA should change the D for developement to W for winning as some coaches seem more interested in winning than developing players.

The behaviour and attitudes of some coaches and parents are not the best.

Apart from the fact that unregulated immigration does not exist.

We are part of a political structure that allows economic freedom of movement.

My great grand parents were part of a political structure that allowed the same freedoms.

When they came to Scotland they were met with hostility from the common working man.

I wonder if you would have had the same attitudes then as you have now?
