Back pages filled with empty nonsense

My inbox today was full of angst at the latest series of ‘favourites’ for the manager’s job.  There are upwards of 20 journalists working on this story right now, each of whom need to push the story on every day.

No information?  Tough, write something.  Not found a single person Peter Lawwell has spoken to?  Hard lines, get Ownie’s neighbour’s granny on again, she’ll be good for a word.

Who’s fault is this?  The journos are just doing a job, the media have space to fill – and it will be filled with any type of speculation.  We all know the rules so why take the bait?

By the time the news of Neil’s resignation leaked out on Thursday Celtic’s moves were already underway.  Potential candidates jockeyed for position in the limelight for a couple of days, and for most cases they were disappointed the call didn’t arrive.  Even Henrik was talking about returning to Celtic at one point, only to reaffirm his commitment to his current employers a couple of days later.

Agents will also be busy offering their clients, Celtic will respond respectfully, but just because an agent opens a one-sided dialogue doesn’t mean meaningful dialogue is taking place.  Celtic will also speak to applicants out of courtesy.  If a former player or prominent candidate asks to be considered, you can expect Celtic to meet them, whether they have a genuine interest or not.

>90% of this activity will be fruitless.  Some of it will seep out into the public domain but it is vastly more likely that those wanting to raise their profile make the newspapers, as opposed to those Celtic have approached.

  1. GG,

Loved that stuff. Always wanted Ken Rosewall to win Wimbledon. He seemed to a very young me, to be the best player who never achieved it. Laver, Newcombe and then the Americans seemed to thwart him, year after year.

Paul67 and one or two others on here often hint that they are in the know with the press and the board yet tell us that they are not in any way connected….

Sid Neg – Davie Moyes is a Rangers man? Wonder where he’ll put the framed Billy McNeill Hoops top his brother bought him on Friday night, because “Big Billy signed Davie for Celtic”?!

Given what I’ve seen and heard about David Moyes and (on here of late) about what a genuinely good guy his Faither was…. surely what’s actually a bit Hunnish is the accusation that he’s a Hun?

He wouldn’t be my choice for manager. But he pulled on the Hooped top I love so I give him the respect he’s due.

  7. Interesting all this talk about the EPL being the most competitive League in the world and now the Championship being ‘more exciting than top flight’ (BBC today).

All good enough but the most competitive League I have every seen ( and played in as a 15 year old) is the Glasgow and District City and Suburban League 4th Division (GDCS). Back to back games at Queen’s Park Rec in the mid-1960s against Garthalmock and Gorbals United had a competitive edge unmatched since or anywhere else.

However, like the EPL, the championship and GDCS, competitive does not equate with quality. On hard as rock Queen’s Park Rec, a ball was hardly needed. Rangers (in liquidation) would have been right at home.

  8. Just seen on SSN that Sandy Clark has just left Asst Manager role at Kilmarnock to pursue new opportunities!!!

Another one to add to the ‘no compensation to be shelled out’ list:-)

    Too too soon for McMullan.

The rigours of playing 90 minutes regularly would have him on the physio bench more often than James Forrest.

The demands of the modern game take a toll on limbs and lungs.

He needs a couple of seasons being weaned gently.

I would offer Fisher, Henderson, Herron, O’Connel and McMullan on loan to a second tier team, on the condition that it is to one team and they play a minimum of 15 games and a maximum of 25.

If you are mobile when in Clearwater, let me suggest a wee 15 minute trip to Dunedin and Honeymoon Island State Park.

The beaches there are absolutely beautiful. They are in Clearwater also, BTW.

I have a picture of a sign from there that warns against the rattlesnakes, but I never saw one.

Dunedin has a wee touch of Scottish heritage about it but it’s a gey thin veneer.

There’s an open air restaurant on the Dunedin Causeway where I had the best fish supper I’ve had in the USA.

I just looked it up. It’s called the Island Outpost and has a shark hanging outside.

That will be the “glib & shameless liars” masterplan up in the air then as there will be a queue a mile long of zombies to watch the championship next year. NOT

It’s natural evolution if you dont change and adapt to your surroundings you die (huns) or you drop down the food chain Hearts& Hibs, they are where they are for a reason and that is thinking the still were big shots and paid the price thankfully.

Meanwhile Hamilton Accies seen the change in the football enviornment changed and adapted accordingly, cut their cloth to suit their means and are reaping the rewards.

Ask any player from hearts or hibs which league they would rather be in and I would wager the answer would not be the one they have landed in.

    Good night all

    Thank you for being here

Joe went on to be headmaster at St David’s Plains secondary.

His wife was the music teacher.

After retirement he emigrated to Australia where his children were.

Joe was a typical Catholic headmaster intent in pushing his pupils through the glass ceiling.

He was extremely approachable, supportive and encouraging no matter the circumstances, and always trying anything to brighten up our school experiences.

Used to show us movies, organize school concerts and was big into school sports.

A foundational stone for many a pupil’s development.

To such we all owe a debt for us overcoming the obstacles of bigotry we faced in those days.

Respect for him and his family down under.
