Back pages filled with empty nonsense

My inbox today was full of angst at the latest series of ‘favourites’ for the manager’s job.  There are upwards of 20 journalists working on this story right now, each of whom need to push the story on every day.

No information?  Tough, write something.  Not found a single person Peter Lawwell has spoken to?  Hard lines, get Ownie’s neighbour’s granny on again, she’ll be good for a word.

Who’s fault is this?  The journos are just doing a job, the media have space to fill – and it will be filled with any type of speculation.  We all know the rules so why take the bait?

By the time the news of Neil’s resignation leaked out on Thursday Celtic’s moves were already underway.  Potential candidates jockeyed for position in the limelight for a couple of days, and for most cases they were disappointed the call didn’t arrive.  Even Henrik was talking about returning to Celtic at one point, only to reaffirm his commitment to his current employers a couple of days later.

Agents will also be busy offering their clients, Celtic will respond respectfully, but just because an agent opens a one-sided dialogue doesn’t mean meaningful dialogue is taking place.  Celtic will also speak to applicants out of courtesy.  If a former player or prominent candidate asks to be considered, you can expect Celtic to meet them, whether they have a genuine interest or not.

>90% of this activity will be fruitless.  Some of it will seep out into the public domain but it is vastly more likely that those wanting to raise their profile make the newspapers, as opposed to those Celtic have approached.

Celtic Nation boss Willie McStay revealed the club is bitterly disappointed to be denied promotion after Ossett Albion were granted a reprieve from relegation from the Evo Stik Division One North.

Nation had hoped the demise of Cammell Laird and Wakefield would open the way for them to join the Evo Stik after missing out on automatic promotion when they finished Northern League runners-up behind Spennymoor.

But the Football Association has rubber-stamped Ossett’s survival despite the Yorkshire club – managed by former Carlisle United striker Richard Tracey – finished second-bottom of the league. Frickley Athletic have also been reprieved in the Premier Division.

The decision ended Nation’s outside hopes of joining Spennymoor in the Evo Stik after Cammell Laird and Wakefield were plunged into financial difficulties, and means the Carlisle club will now have to fight it out in the Northern League against next season.

McStay said: “The decision went to a vote and we are really disappointed. What we can’t understand is why they kept someone up rather than promoted someone. There is no protocol, it’s all about going to a vote.

“We tick all the boxes with the growth of the club, the stadium and the average crowd which is nearly quadruple the 100 people Ossett get.”

The decision comes after the FA met to discuss the structure of the non-league pyramid for 2014-15.

McStay is now set to open contract talks with players and launch a transfer market raid after confirmation the club will be playing in the Northern League next season.

The former Celtic youth-team supremo had a meeting this week with club owner Frank Lynch to discuss next season’s budget.

“We now know what direction we are going in next season and we have to evaluate where we are,” he said.

“I am planning for pre-season knowing we are in the Northern League and putting together a squad that will be strong enough to go one better than last season.”

I guess the undead are still in their sights

The government has raised a record £23.9bn in additional tax for the year to the end of March as a result of a crackdown on tax avoidance.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said it had secured the money – the highest amount since records began – as a result of its investigations.

The figure is almost £1bn higher than the target set by Chancellor George Osborne in the Autumn Statement.

HMRC credited “increased activity” on unpaid tax for the figure.

“HMRC will pursue those seeking to avoid their responsibilities and will collect the taxes that are due,” said Treasury minister David Gauke.

“The government is determined to tackle the minority that seek to avoid paying the taxes they owe,” he added.

HMRC said of the total amount it had raised, more than £8bn came from large business, £1bn from criminals and £2.7bn from tackling avoidance schemes in courts.

In total, HMRC has said it expects to secure £100bn between May 2010 and March 2015 as a result of its investigations into unpaid tax,

The “tax gap” – the difference between the tax due and that collected – was 7% for the 2011-2012 financial year – the most recent figure available.

Arsenal are set to make a surprise move to try to sign Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall from under the noses of north London rivals Tottenham.

Cardiff value Marshall at around £15million, but that price tag has not put off Arsenal from targeting the 29-year-old as a replacement for Lukasz Fabianski.

FA Cup hero Fabianski has rejected a new contract to stay at the Emirates and is close to completing a free transfer move to Swansea.

That leaves Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger needing a new keeper to put pressure on first-choice Wojciech Szczesny and provide top-class cover.

Wenger has also considered Reading’s Alex McCarthy as his new deputy, but Marshall is emerging as Arsenal’s top target to replace Fabianski and the club are set to firm up their interest with Cardiff.

Marshall was Cardiff’s stand-out performer in their season in the Premier League that ended in relegation and was named the club’s player of the year. He only signed a new contract in February.

The new deal protects Marshall’s value for Cardiff and the Welsh club will be desperate to get as much money as possible for the Scotland international.

Tottenham have lined up Marshall as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris if the Frenchman quits White Hart Lane in search of Champions League football this summer.

But Spurs have not given up hope of keeping Lloris, which gives Arsenal the chance to make their move before their rivals can react. Liverpool have also shown an interest in Marshall.

Wenger will no doubt be reluctant to match Cardiff’s £15m asking price for Marshall, but Arsenal are hopeful they will be able to find a compromise agreement.

Marshall started his career at Celtic and made 50 appearances before moving to Norwich in 2007. It is at Cardiff, however, where he has blossomed – particularly during the club’s promotion to the Premier League and subsequent relegation.

As well as a replacement for Fabianski, Wenger wants at least one new forward, a midfielder and a right-back to take over from Bacary Sagna.

Sagna is expected to leave on a free transfer to join Manchester City and Wenger is interested in a separate deal to take James Milner, who can operate at right-back, in the opposite direction.

“Today, there’s a 90 per cent chance I will leave [Arsenal] and 10 per cent that I will stay,” said Sagna. “I have been asking myself that question for a long time and it’s the time for a new challenge.

“Several European and English clubs have contacted me. Certain talks have gone further than others and Manchester City are among them.”

As it stands, only a few points to summarise today. There are 2165 candidates in the running for the managers job at Celtic park, and the press have found a reason why each one would be unsuitable, from not being Celtic minded, to being unhappy about the transfer budget, to being unhappy about players being sold under their nose, to not having enough experience, to having too much experience, to the SPL being too small a fish, to being an Irish Catholic with the wrong colour hair.

Not all bad news though. Next years second tier of Scottish Football is apparently going to be right up there for quality and excitement alongside La Liga, Serie A and the EPL. A new tv deal worth £1 billion pounds is being discussed as we speak.
