Back pages filled with empty nonsense

My inbox today was full of angst at the latest series of ‘favourites’ for the manager’s job.  There are upwards of 20 journalists working on this story right now, each of whom need to push the story on every day.

No information?  Tough, write something.  Not found a single person Peter Lawwell has spoken to?  Hard lines, get Ownie’s neighbour’s granny on again, she’ll be good for a word.

Who’s fault is this?  The journos are just doing a job, the media have space to fill – and it will be filled with any type of speculation.  We all know the rules so why take the bait?

By the time the news of Neil’s resignation leaked out on Thursday Celtic’s moves were already underway.  Potential candidates jockeyed for position in the limelight for a couple of days, and for most cases they were disappointed the call didn’t arrive.  Even Henrik was talking about returning to Celtic at one point, only to reaffirm his commitment to his current employers a couple of days later.

Agents will also be busy offering their clients, Celtic will respond respectfully, but just because an agent opens a one-sided dialogue doesn’t mean meaningful dialogue is taking place.  Celtic will also speak to applicants out of courtesy.  If a former player or prominent candidate asks to be considered, you can expect Celtic to meet them, whether they have a genuine interest or not.

>90% of this activity will be fruitless.  Some of it will seep out into the public domain but it is vastly more likely that those wanting to raise their profile make the newspapers, as opposed to those Celtic have approached.

    Many thanks for posting that

I was 9 at the time -my dear old dad could get time off to go -don’t think we could have afforded it even if he could -but he and my mum took me the next night to CP

We sat at the back of the old stand -near where the TV people must have been because we could see on a small monitor the team arriving

Ground was packed and making so much noise that you couldn’t hear the band!

    Brilliant memories -thanks again

  8. Judging by the ongoing divergence of comments on here, whoever gets the gig is gonna get it in the neck from some section or another.

Suppose that’s fitba to some extent. But maybe we need to be a bit more circumspect.

I seem to recall Owen Coyle being a hot favourite one other time – the news was spilling out from Donegal, and I have absolutely no doubt that he was approached at that time.

He may well have been approached again this time and I bet if I went asking (6 degrees of separation and all that…) I could find a person I know who knows a person who knows Coyles family in Donegal who has been talking to one of Ownies siblings or parents who heard Ownie was talking to Pistol Pete. I am kidding you not – that is how this works. It might be deliberate on Celtic’s part to give cover to talks on going elsewhere. WHo knows, but if the bookies are giving short odds then someone is talking and many people are betting.

However – I hope Celtic have the good sense to go for someone who is willing to buy in to advice from Sports Science bods, good scouts et al. Maybe that’s Coyle, maybe that isnae.

Other than Di Canio I won’t judge the next guy to get the job on anything other than his performance over the first 18 months. And even then I could be wrong!

Gie the new guy a break, whoever he is.

Less of the board propaganda / less of the PL love in.

Recent events suggest we are not very good at this sort of thing.

BTM was 10th on a “short” list of 12 and look how that turned out.

NL was mucking about with the youth / stiffs and was a ready made stop gap.

If the board knew NL was on the way out where was NL’s NL?

The back room staff does not seem to have one – was this a mistake?

Succession planning would suggest we have a working list to go through.

Fair enough that the noise will generate interest but your comments suggest we are starting very much from scratch.

    Slightly sub optimal to me.

Finally do we have a working list for the day when PL takes more time to spend his bonus?

Will Labour and the Conservatives finally discuss the concerns Ukip has raised?

    26th May 2014

    Douglas Murray

Unlike the other political parties, Ukip has tackled the issue of immigration head on.

Ukip have come top of the polls for the UK in the EU elections. Now which of the two following scenarios might we most likely expect from the other parties?

Might the Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties, along with their amazingly loyal chorus-line in the British media, wake up sincerely believing that a ‘racist’ political party is now the biggest UK party in the EU? Do you think they will escalate a war against that party and the public who voted for them, such as would only be appropriate from anyone who actually believed that this country was now dominated and — in Brussels at least — led by ‘racists’.

Or is it possible that in the coming days Conservative and Labour leaders (and Lib Dem ones — if anyone can find any) will have to talk about some of the concerns Ukip has legitimately raised? Might they begin to talk about trying to fix our immigration problems and other issues that seem so insurmountable as long as we are members of an unreformed EU? And if this is the case might we, the British public, come to the conclusion that these parties and their loyal hacks never did actually believe that Ukip were ‘racist’, but merely kept saying so in the dishonest and vain hope that they would succeed in scaring the British people from what turn out to be mainstream and popular concerns?

  14. Will the managerial appointment change our chances of winning the SPFL?

    No. Unequivocally.

Will the managerial appointment effect our chance of qualifying for the CL?

    Yes.

If we were to make a Mowbrayesque error would we fail to qualify?

    Probably.

If we were to make an inspired appointment could we again fail to qualify?

    Possibly.

So what is the risk of any appointment, experience professional or promising young coach?

    High.

So what is the risk in promoting the likes of Stevie Frail and John Kennedy to the post?

    High.

So for the appointment board, Peter and myself, this is a high stakes, high risk game.

    Double or quits?

    “Just [FFin’] ignore them?

On any thread about negative coverage of Rangers or Rangers Fans there is always a large number of posters advocating just ignores them. Sadly this is not a good tactic. Like it or not the media form opinion and the constant attacks on our club have led to us being demonised. BBC (Scotland) that bastion of honest impartiality being one of the worst offenders, indeed in the politically correct Lala land they inhabit it is only Ranges you are allowed to hate, indeed not only are you allowed to hate Rangers you are positively encouraged to do so. We must complain whenever we are wronged, I know it’s not the Protestant Way but we really have no choice.”

[So Saturday’s show an empty building red cards caper was a complaint?]

    ——

“Our enemies are Kamikaze nutters that need shooting down at every opportunity.”

    ——

“The Protestant people, the Orange Order and Rangers are constantly dehumanised and none of their leaders speaks up for their organisations, far less rally their people to take action.

The catholic church in conjunction with their football club never allow a negative story to pass unchallenged nor miss a chance to play the downtrodden card.

We now live in a country where patriotism is defined alongside racism”

    ——

“We should all take every opportunity to complain and challenge media inaccuracies . The press in this country do not reflect in any way the views of the general population on major issues like immigration etc. Politically correct numpties fill positions of authority and try to tell us how to live our live. To them i say, I am a proud Scottish Protestant, i am a proud orangeman and i live my life in a way that reflects the true culture of my country. I will respect people who acknowledge and respect my culture. To the media brain dead clones I say. No surrender, why should Scottish Protestants have to change because incomers don’t like our ways.”

  17. paulmc061264 on

I would really like us to bring in Garcia the former Brighton and Barcelona u’19’s coach. He would bring a more attacking free flowing type of football back.

  18. Mitch – succession planning is OK and predictable if you are doing it in house but to do it with a manager in situ is pretty difficult. You may have a guy sounded out, but that guy will be working. He might after say, two three years of ‘waiting on the call’ from Celtic decide to say ‘to hell with this’, or take another job that comes along, or he might turn out to have been gash!

You also can’t really have the guy in situ knowing that his job is going to Mr X at some stage – looking over his shoulder.

Fair enough, keep the eye out on potential new managers and coaches but ethically and within the rules of football and the laws of employment, you have to wait until either you’ve sacked a guy or the guy resigns – at this point I suspect the long list and the short list come out.

There may be 9 reasons you can’t get the first 9 guys you want. Or you may take number 10 on the list because you feel the fans want something that he has – and bums need to be put on seats to pay the new guy and for his players.

Will Celtic go for the ‘cheapest option’ because it’s the cheapest option? I don’t think they will. But if they have two guys willing to come, of similar character, ability and experience then I suspect they will take finance in to consideration. More accurately I think the candidates will either say yes or no to the renumeration on offer.

Out of interest, who would you go for? Who would be the more expensive option willing to come to Celtic that you think we can attract? (For the record, I would prefer hugely if we don’t go for Coyle – because I think there will be ‘cheaper’ options who are much better placed to work within the framework of a modern football club, with a fresher and more scientific approach to his or her work)
