Backlash needed for Highlanders

623

Three weeks after putting 8 goals past South Lanarkshire’s top team Celtic struggled to demonstrate their superiority against the county’s least decorated SFA member

We’ve seen these games before, East Kilbride looked no weaker than the Arbroath team who took us to a replay after drawing at Celtic Park a few years back, but neither performance was an endorsement of Celtic’s football.

I’m getting an uncomfortable feeling that teams know how to play Celtic. For most, this knowledge will not affect the result, but some, like Ross County and Aberdeen, will figure they can give us the ball all day, and as long as they stick to task, they’ll have a chance.

The only resolution to the ills of the last three outings is to get back on the field and boss a game the way we did several times last month. Ross County and Inverness both visit Celtic Park in the next two weeks and both need to feel a backlash. Let’s hope.

Most Celtic supporters recognised what Fergus McCann did for us. That doesn’t mean to say we loved him.

He was a businessman who did what he said he would do. But he was a businessman who used to be a conveyor on the Croy Celtic Supporters bus. Do you know Croy? Undisputedly, You can not please everybody.

What is not in dispute is that Fergus McCann will go down favourably in Celtic history.

    _____

Fergus will definitely go down favourably in Celtic history

However, he used to get pelters. I can remember people booing him when he was unfurling a league flag (Quinn got the same). I can remember chants outside Celtic park after tough defeats.

All the moaning about the current board is just giving me a bit of de ja vu. Which is funny to me because I don’t see many complain about Fergus now.

Like you, i want Celtic to be Celtic.

But i do feel…that if you are in a position of power at CP….then you should be able to take the flak, and the responsibility that goes with the remuneration.

How the current PLC are allowed to absolve themselves…is beyond me.

The Ciftci carry on being a case in point.

Such mismanagement should be dealt with…not ignored.

Philbhloy …. I agree on that point , and had definitely thought the same thing myself ….

2 seasons ago, we didn’t look as fit as most of the teams we played (certainly in Europe) … last season, I thought we finished games stronger than most of the teams … and assumed RD/JC was resposible for the improvement, and expected us to be even fitter this season …..but, this season, we seem to have backwards on that point …..

that is troubling …. players might not like the coach’s tactics …. but if players are not working as hard as last season (which, if they are not as fit, is waht I assume) …. then that is on the players … not RD.

Whether CKR is any good or not, will we play him and Leigh upfront from now on or do we just do that against the wee teams?

I’ve got a feeling that we will revert to one up front and CKR will warm the bench most of the time.

I think he adds a bit of physicality, and I like that.

Two omissions are Christie and Alan

I suspect neither will break through this season but both could next year. I’m particularly hopeful for Christie as I knew his Dad so have followed his progress. Scott Alan I know less about.

    Review

1937-04-24: Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen, Scottish Cup – Pictures – Kerrydale StreetSomething very special about this day and this game. It was just the vast scale of it that amazes all who look back on it. Forever it will be recorded to be a record attendance in the UK for a match and possibly forever in Europe. One day some egomaniac somewhere will demand his country to create a white elephant of a stadium which can hold even more and the club world record attendance will be broken, however until then it will never diminish the day and keep Celtic in the limelight. There were actually even more outside trying to get in! The actual world record for all football was recorded only days before at 149,000 for Scotland v England held again at the same stadium (Hampden).

People travelled from all over Scotland to this game, and in the days before car ownership was a common thing, that was some achievement, and the atmosphere could definitely be said to be packed and raucous. With no huns around, it was to be a glorious day for both sides. The Aberdeen manager himself was an-Celtic player (Travers) and so there was a bit of Celtic in both camps. For Aberdeen, they were challenging for their first Scottish Cup title (then the most prestigious cup in the land (although the league was most coveted)) whilst for Celtic it was their 15th! An incredible achievement for the time.

In the match, Celtic had a strong start which saw us take a 1-0 lead after just 12mins where a shot by Buchan was slotted into the back of the net by Crum after the goalkeeper had to parry the shot. However, the lead was very short-lived and Aberdeen equalized soon after in just one minute!

For much of the second half, it was mostly all Celtic with the midfield in control stifling their Aberdeen counterparts. Chic Geaton’s was said to have been the gem in our midfield, controlling it magnificently. However, as much as our strikers were creating the opposition problems, it required the intervention of the legendary Jimmy McGrory to create the opportunity that won us the cup, freeing up Willie Buchan to shoot past the opposition goalkeeper with 20mins to go. Aberdeen claimed a handball from McGrory in the move to the goal, but not given or substantiated.

Full-time whistle went, and a landmark in the club game was complete.

Celtic were winners of the Scottish cup for the 15th time. Aberdeen had to wait a bit longer for their first time to get their hands on the cup but a new giant of the Scottish game was born.

What a novel joy to read “East Kilbride v Celtic live updates” on CQN, something that had never crossed my mind as being even a possibility until a few short weeks ago.

EKFC showed, if further proof were needed, that you can take a group of good footballers, each lacking a specific attribute – pace, height, athleticism etc – train and shape them, and frustrate a top class team.

While the football club was started in 2010, it was only in 2013, as our older youth players were graduating into adult football, that it was decided to put together an adult team.

As an SFA Quality Mark and accredited Community Club, with a brand new training academy and associated resources, the club was accepted into the Lowland League it its inaugural season. Our first match was played in August 2013.

In the intervening 2.5 years, the senior team has played all of 68 competitive league fixtures, about the same number as Callum McGregor.

As an amateur team, our players are registered on a “non-contract” basis, and are free to leave at any time without the club receiving compensation. Each summer our best performers tend to move to other clubs, and we need to rebuild the team.

This is generally accomplished by promoting kids from the U19s and 20s, supplemented by older players who are leaving the professional or semi-professional ranks, many time-served apprentices.

After our first season in the Lowland League, finishing runners up to Spartans and winning the Challnge Cup, manager Iain King left, as did most of the 1st team. Incoming manager Billy Ogilvie was left with just 6 registered players only 5 weeks before the start of the season. A combination of youth graduates and contacts of Billy’s from Queens Park were melded together into a team, that again finished the season 2nd in the league, this time to Edinburgh City, and won the League Cup

As usual, we lost a number of important players, including the league’s top scorer Joao Victoria who signed for Arbroath, and captain Craig McLeish to Queens Park. Another close season, another new team to build.

I think only 1 or 2 payers in this season’s squad remain from 2 years ago. Around half of the 1st team squad, and 6 of those named in the group for yesterday’s match, are local kids who’ve come through the youth pathway. That pathway starts at age 4, and there are currently 30 age group teams encompassing aorund 600 kids. It’s not designed as a ‘conveyor belt’ but it’s pretty effective.

As an amateur side, our players receive travelling expenses only, and the entire Annual budget to run the first team, the U20s (reserves) and the U19s amounts to less than Campbell Ogilvie might allegedly spend on a good night out.

Given those circumstances, it seems scarcely believable that the team could progress through to the 5th round of the Scottish Cup, and thereafter, be able to contain the top professional team in the country, a handball and a scrappy stramash giving Celtic a 2-0 win on the day.

EKFC were clearly unable to hit Celtic, struggling for 30% possession and a single shot on target, but Celtic equally toiled to damage Kilby.

It serves as an example of how a good coach is able to to train and shape a team, irrespective of the gap in resources and talent, to ‘compete’ against a bigger club. Lenny did it versus Barca a few seasons ago to great effect, Morton did it to Lenny, and it’s something that every manager in the SPFL does when facing Celtic.

Had Kilby made a little better use of the ball, perhaps a stronger point man to unsettle the centre halves, a little better luck in their own box, it might have been a more uncomfortable day than any of us could have contemplated.

As it was, Celtic won through to the next round, and East Kilbride won respect and new friends.

It’s actually the dream result for this CQNer. And I suspect, for one or two others.
