Balde, Hooper, summer challenges

1119

13 June and Celtic have signed a striker!  Do we have some important games coming up early in the season?  6’4” Amido Balde joined Sporting Lisbon three years ago but never made an appearance for the club.

After three loan deals he joined Vitoria Guimaraes a year ago, where he caught the eye of Celtic scouts.  At 22-years-old, he is right in the sweet spot of Celtic’s recruitment strategy: fully developed physically, old enough to be considered prime first team material but with many years of prime football ahead.

Playing for Celtic is quite different than playing for Vitoria Guimaraes, so it may take Amido a period of adjustment to settle into life as a Glasgow sporting celebrity, but he is clearly the man Neil Lennon and the scouts wanted.  Based on that, I’m happy.

Despite what could be described as cover, and the fact that the player has declined a new contract, I’m still not happy to sell Gary Hooper.  We have lots to do this summer before that moves up the agenda.

Welcome to Celtic, Amido.

The raffle for a signed Celtic top in aid of 1254125 ends early tomorrow morning. THIS IS THE LAST CALL FOR TICKETS, which cost only £1 each. Get in there…..

Yes, a very good song. I used to think Happy Jack was about a seaside donkey, didn’t listen closely enough to the words.

I think there might be a reason that the the mighty Norwich City and the world renowned Hull City are the only teams to express an interest in Hooper.

He’s not good enough for the EPL, imo.

Playing for us, at times, he appears to be lazy and uninterested for games and long spells in games.

Also, would he get the service in the EPL that he gets at Celtic?

He would need to work twice as hard to get half the chances. Again imo.

I hope he ends up in Hull.

Bring on Tony Watt……………..or lose him.

I do know that Indie and Dance music kind of synthesised at times way bach then, that is why I am probably more excited about seeing Primal Scream at this moment. Once the Roses strike the first chord though…… ;))

  9. Scenario: I am a broker. I have a client that desperately needs rid of, I don’t know let’s pluck a number out of thin air, 785k shares but it has to be in one lot and I’m not prepared to sit on them myself and drip feed them into the market.

So what I need is a guy that has the cash to do the job for me. In return I guarantee as sale price for the shares above what he paid and he can sell them off in chunks of eg 50k (again a figure plucked from thin air, not from this morning’s trades). This will take a few weeks and he will get a 10% return on his initial cash input.

I’ll also arrange a press release to stop people misreading the trade as a sell and panicking.

3 months from now you’ll not here of Keiron Prior in relation to RFC shares ever again.

  11. Royston Drenthe? Massively hyped player back in the day, ended up at Real Madrid where he petered out. Didn’t look bad mind in his loan at Everton, powerful but still a bit raw.

Who was the other young dutch (I think) player we were heavily linked with at the same time? Ended up going to Blackburn and doing nothing, if I recall.

  13. Kieran Prior bought at 50 pence a pop. If he sells them back in 50,000 bundles at 54 pence, he makes more than £30,000. Aye, no daft, right enough.

Plus, a clever guy like him doesn’t need to own hundreds of thousands of Sevco shares to know the answers to the big questions. He just needs to tune into Charlotte.

  16. Welcome to Celtic big man. But a bit worried that Paul has described him in words that sum up our failed our striker policy over last 6 years. Too many non scoring forwards have come in that had potential but their previous goal scoring record has continued at paradise A policy that gave us no strikers in top 4 spl scorers last year. Hope Balde changes that. Not being negative just talking facts

  17. Welcome Amido Balde…

Think this guy is exactly what we need, nice also too see a wee bit of business done early doors. CL Qualifiers can be tricky affairs, we must be prepared, leave nothing to chance.

While I got to agree with Paul that 22 is “the sweet spot” we must ask the question why isn’t there a plethora of ex-Lennoxtown Academy bhoys of that age in the first team?

I raved about him a few years ago when he was in the same youth team as big Evander.

Small combative but skillfull– originally a left back but not unlike Edgar Davids in appearance or demeanour.

After the youth World Cup, Madrid snapped him up for something like £12M and tried him in midfield where he was good but not great.

He then went on loan to Everton where he scored some good goals but was in and out.

There is undoubtedly a player there– if someone can get him disciplined and focused he could do a great job for us– we are the kind of club that could be the making of him and bring out all that talent.

There is a lot to bring out!

  21. Paulus – don’t think I’d ever be happy to sell hooper – he scores goals – goals can win games innit ! and he scored that last goal against a team we used to play when they limped into CP – deleted it from me sky box though

  22. Chairbhoy,

MrMcGuiness only just joined us I think we’ll need to wait a few years to have a regular flow from youth to first team

  23. Chairbhoy

We have released most of our academy Bhoys and they ply their trade for numerous teams north and south of the border.

We will only get one or two gems from our academy like most clubs. We may at some point get a golden era of Bhoys like Man Utd did with Beckham, Scholes, Nevilles, etc but that only happens once every ten years if you are lucky. Bhoys change and develop at different ages. Some are dynamite at 14 and don’t make the grade. The big loss for our academy was Feruz Islam. The Bhoy is a star and although his attitude is questionable he was the Beckham of our academy and would probably have carried another few through who had built a rapport with him and we could have had a wee clutch of players who could have made the first team together. Unfortunatley he choose the Chelski cash over the chance to cement a place in our first team.

I think the academy is working and there is a batch who could make the first team in the next few years. It’s how we now blood them in that is key. Could Toshney be a centre back for the first team next season? Seems to have done well at Dundee and is back at the Hoops next season. I would like to see the League Cup used as a sounding board for some of our youths. Play a team of fringe and youth players in that tournament. It’s important to win all competitions we enter but finding out more about how our youngsters can cope at that level is important too. CL is vital to the club so even for the first couple of rounds it would be a worthwhile excercise to give some of the younger lads a decent run out.

Switchin’ on the ole hunguffery detector it strikes me as unlikely that a good Catholic boy from Salford [almost certainly true] would have been a ‘lifelong supporter of the Horribles’ [ MSM version]

Someone on here yesterday posted a link to an article on him in one of the Catholic papers; an unusual feature in his palmares which may place him outside the RST/VB/Follow Follow demographic.

With respect I think your missing the point. Do you think if they had great scoring records they would be available for the transfer budget that Celtic operate with?

Players for example, with the scoring ratios of a Hooper in leagues better than Scotland( or even on a par) go for upwards of £10m.

We have to pick ones with the greatest potential and develop them.
